Along with the former pro surfer Brendan Buckley, Ciaramella discusses a recent editorial decision to interview Israeli surfer Anat Lelior, the country’s first Championship Tour surfer, a real Rocky story of a gay gal growing up in an often waveless country succeeding at the highest level.
I was surprised, given the magazine’s lack of any historical perspective and in light of my final project there being gutted to allay the sensitivities of those who believe, like longboarder Lucy Small, that Israel is “at the nexus of colonisation, white supremacy, capitalism and (the) military industrial complex…”
Buckley recoils, tells of his surprise such a topic was even canvassed.
Quickly, Ciaramella delivers a caveat.
“Just to make it clear, certainly not pro fucking genocide,” he growls, a flimsy leftish accusation that bears no scrutiny and comes as hozzies in Tel Aviv are filled with legless soldiers and IDF cemeteries with the corpses of five hundred soldiers, men and women force to hunt Hamas building by building, tunnel by tunnel.

I remember staying at a Zionist settlement in the West Bank back in Spring of 2014 as part of a program studying in the region.
Lots of Israelis from all over, tons from America. Super orthodox, not Hasidic, couldn’t be more specific. Went to temple, met members of the community, and it felt pretty Truman show.
The Rabbi there met with our group and went on a 20 minute lecture about how the Muslims, and more specifically the Arabs, were a scourge on the planet and needed to be eradicated. That they were possessed by the Devil and was effectively describing them as infidels without saying as much. That the concerted effort to rid them of their families and land was necessary for peace.
These are government approved settlements (34 just recently approved in the past 24 hours!) with extremist ideologies manning the ship. With government support and backing, while the normal, atheist/agnostic Israeli stuck somewhere in between and usually wanting to leave Israel if it makes sense/is feasible.
Having a surf wiggle and filming trip in Tel Aviv can make any virile young man’s heart beam with a love for excellent falafel and hot jewesses. Doubt it is as tasteful when you’re driving through 3 different zones of security to get through the West Bank just to hear some religious leader talk about exterminating a people group already under their thumb.
Of course there are Palestinians that lead a decent life in Israel. They conform to survive and adjust because they aren’t naive about who’s boss. That doesn’t necessarily legitimize a government.
For all the shit you see in the news there are actually tons of very reasonable people from all over the spectrum in Israel Palestine that are just trying to exist. Much in the same way not all of us on the USA stand with our president (or the Dems quite frankly), there are people in the region that are in the middle of a geopolitical mess out of fucking circumstance.

Egypt had the good sense to sign a peace treaty with the State of Israel, as did Jordan in exchange for billions in US money that keeps their economies afloat, but calling Egypt a pluralist political society is flatly untrue. After a failed experiment with democracy, electing Mohammed Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood, they are back to one man, one party rule for the forseeable future.

About twenty years ago I was in Margs looking for a step-up to take back up North. Found this beautiful Wayne Lynch 6’5 diamond tail. I’d never seen a diamond tail before, it didn’t look too extreme one way or the other so grabbed it.
Barnacle might be happy to know it was indeed a magic board ( of sorts). Fun in the small reef days down south , excellent in mid range days up North. Got one of my best beachie barrels ever on it at a maxxing day at Budjidup- a double sucking beast that just let me chip in before it heaved square.
It’s long gone now. Can’t remember the dimensions though it was quite meaty through the guts but foiled nicely on the rails, which is what I was chasing.

That photo was first surf on the Wayne Lynch and the only evidence I’ve got that it ever existed. Taken on a spectacular mid April day at Gallows in the Margaret River area. It was a classic windless, mid-morning autumn day in the South West. Playing around and getting a feel for a new stick. Bit over-gunned but you’re not going to leave a new board alone. That’s the thing about down South WA, due to the power of the waves you can ride a bigger board and still get have a bit of fun.
As to the diamond tail….I couldn’t rightfully tell much difference to a rounded pin. Perhaps a slight staggering/ staging when transferring from rail to rail but was it better or worse? Hard to say. The board went well. The tail didn’t ruin it, that’s for sure.
Just myself , Rye Craike and Dion Agius out in fun 2-3ft reef wedges under a blazing blue sky.
This was one of my first waves on it and I still remember the sensation of the rail biting as I led into this turn and thinking..”Ooh! That feels nice!”.
Also recall leaving the water, checking it over on the beach and appreciating that I had a good board added to a great quiver and several months of quality North West desert waves ahead of me. Got dry, drove back along the bumpy track, got an epic feed at the bakery and spent the arvo at a mate’s BBQ. Just another day!

– 50-60% were women, children or over 65
– 7 000-10 000 excess deaths occurred because of the collapsed healthcare system
– Children and elderly people did die due to malnutrition, as a direct consequence of Israel blocking food aid and medical supplies
– 60-80% of all buildings were destroyed

There is a certain wave that on its day is about 400-600 yards long and rifles down the line at insanely perfect speed, which I used to surf literally by myself at times.
All sand, crystal clear water with the tide, so many fish in the lineup your board cavitates underneath them as you paddle out.
Just a complete gem of a wave that gets truly world class.
Oddly enough my favorite waves are not necessarily the most perfect ones, but that one is probably the most perfect.
