An Easter morning note of thanks to the Air Force Pararescue Specialists, better known as “PJs,” for their heroic and successful combat search and rescue efforts in Iran. “These things we do, that others may live,” is the sacred oath of these elite warriors who wear maroon berets to remind them of the blood shed by their predecessors in Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq. The lifeguards of the spec ops community, PJs are masters of both land and sea and are the unsung heroes of the spec ops community.
After attending and successfully completing combat dive, airborne, and special warfare schools, every Pararesueman receive a year’s worth of medical training. Unlike other spec ops units who meticulously plan and “dirt dive” their operations, when a Pararescue unit receives an “alert” that a pilot has gone down, they often have an hour or less to plan their combat search and rescue (CSAR) mission. From the Mayaguez Incident to the Battle of Mogadishu, to Robert’s Ridge, PJs have lived up to their creed.
Early reports and RUMINT indicate that Pararescuemen from the 103rdRescue Squadron played a central role in the rescues of the three American pilots whose plane were shot down over Iran. This was the same unit that first air drop tested the Greenough Advanced Rescue Craft (GARC) in the waters near their West Hampton, Long Island base. I remember nervously sitting by the phone that day, waiting for a call from “The Colonel” to let me know how the tests went. The very demanding Air Force Lieutenant Colonel TC Phillips was a retired PJ and the GARC’s greatest advocate.
Instead, I got a call from my old martial arts training partner, Steve “Bedford” Brown. The born and bred Hamptons local/enforcer is a skilled surfer and he happened to be out at “The Bowl” when an Air Force C130 flew by. “Greenough boats were falling from the sky!” he said. “They looked great!” Shortly thereafter, “The Colonel” sent me this video. It was a good day:

How bad could the conditions be after what they chose to run in?
Paddled out in the dark this morning, riding the rip out into 4-6 foot sets which turned out to be surprisingly gentle on the head. The water was very clear, and glassy.
After making polite noises to the pack, I paddled on further towards the horizon to see if I could snag on of the beasts out back. Alone, with a small crew of fellow old farts 50m behind me I just sat, listening to the hoots from the inside, occaisonally ducking under the odd big rogue that I was a touch too deep for.
After waiting for ‘the right one’ for longer than I should’ve, I realised how chilled I felt. Like… at peace. Just bobbing around, not even really trying to catch a wave although I half-heartedly paddled for a couple that were really too fat to catch. I knew they were taking the piss out of me on the inside but I also understood that I didn’t GAF. I was buzzed with some ocean vibe I couldn’t explain and didn’t want to interupt. Like being in a flow-state without actually doing anything.
Did that for probably two hours. Paddled in a vague manner north to a couple different peaks, said hello and called some familiars into the sets. The holiday crowd grew, the tide filled in a bit and the waves got worse.
Honestly felt totally zen.
Eventually I felt cold enough to paddle back round the pack to the deep section and back to shore.
Not a single wave did I catch, and yet it was one of the best sessions of my life.
Weird. Awesome. Epic.
Go figure.
So good mate. Had a similar surf yesterday. Felt no need for heroic behaviour, had fun amongst the sketchy conditions.

My father flew 150 combat missions in Vietnam while driving an F-105. He was one of the fortunate ones as all of missions were round trips with a few close calls including one during the Son Tay prison raid. Somewhere I have a number of mission tapes including a search and rescue operation and the Son Tay raid. In the rescue mission tape you can hear bullets rattling through the Green Giant as it drops the penetrator into the jungle to grab the downed pilot. Right as they bring the pilot into the chopper the FAC calls for a medical report and the report is devastating as a sniper shot the pilot in the head just as he entered the chopper. So be proud of our military today as war isn’t pretty!
