Newspapers respond to Great White attack at Coogee.

Shark attacks are becoming more common – and a cull will work

"It is scandalous that shark scientists perpetuate the myth that shark culls don’t work."

(Editor’s note: In today’s Sydney Morning Herald a child-like essay appeared in the op-pages claiming that shark culls don’t work because “sharks swim vast distances”. The author, the paper’s environment and climate reporter who has “crunched the numbers” on attacks, describes any killing of sharks as “cruel and pointless”. This, despite evidence, click here etc, that Great Whites have a thing called “fear induced mass exodus” which keeps em away from an arrival of orcas or, say, a Great White hanging off a baited hook. So I asked Dan Webber, from, yeah, the fabled Webber clan, a man who’s had a front row seat to an attack to write a rebuttal. It ain’t quite a rebuttal of the story that appeared in the Herald but hits most of the same behaviours the writer of the piece exhibits.)

In a recent interview on Ain’t That Swell, Greens Senator Peter Whish-Wilson criticised the Murdoch Press for sensational reporting of shark attacks, as if the horror of shark attack is not worthy of public attention. They jokingly call The Daily Telegraph “The Daily Terrorgraph”.

The same argument has been used against recent media coverage of an attempted beheading in Belfast, claiming that the civil unrest erupting in its wake is primarily due to the style of news coverage, instead of the gruesome nature of the attack.

Bus and cars burned in anti-immigration protests in Belfast after stabbing

Progressives like Whish-Wilson are so devoted to their various agendas that they totally ignore the pain and suffering caused by their favourite policies. They view themselves as an elite breed of visionaries capable of social engineering a better world.

The psychology of their blindness is described, in “Vital Lies, Simple Truths: The Psychology of Self Deception”, as a mental block that protects them from experiencing the discomfort of cognitive dissonance. The horror of a shark attack is ignored because it conflicts with their desire to be seen as a good person concerned about the environment.

I first met Senator Whish-Wilson at the Senate Inquiry into Shark Mitigation and Deterrent Measures, when he chaired a series of hearings around Australia in 2017. He kindly acknowledged my family’s status as “Australian surfing royalty”, which stems from an episode of Dateline, when the late George Negus decided to boost our reputation, after we donated a surfboard to Vanimo Surf Club in PNG. He was impressed that we had not taken the opportunity to promote the Webber brand, but had instead glassed the board with custom decals of the surf club’s logo, including the traditional lizard design carved on their canoes. The donation was heartfelt, because it carried a message that we are a community that extends all the way from the city beaches of Sydney to the remote villages of Papua New Guinea.

Clearly, the media have enormous power in swaying public opinion.

Ever since the Second World War, mainstream media have relentlessly eroded the traditional values that built Western Civilisation. At the beginning of the interview, Senator Whish-Wilson was asked to share a story from his local area. He told a wonderful story about an Aboriginal woman, named Wauba Debar, who is credited with saving two white men from a sinking boat during a heavy storm.

It is a great story.

However, in the context of the culture war, it was a clear shot across the bow of Anglo Australians, who are reminded incessantly that their ancestors colonised the continent at great expense to the original inhabitants.

This one-sided narrative is routinely promoted by academics, whose careers depend on publishing research that supports some form of progressive agenda. One such paper claims that our “unwillingness to adapt to an ecologically sustainable paradigm is simply colonialism in action”.

In the next episode of Ain’t That Swell, which drops tomorrow, I present the opposing viewpoint, drawing on firsthand experience of the shark crisis in Ballina, along with various insights taken from academic research.

As I explain in the interview, shark scientists claim that shark culls don’t work, because the number of sharks in an area does not necessarily equate to risk of shark attack. They typically cite a 1994 study which noted that the rate of shark attacks in Hawaii did not change despite the culling of 4,668 sharks. I ridicule this claim by comparing the stats from Hawaii with the data from Queensland.

Firstly, we have to establish how many of the 4,668 sharks actually posed a threat to human safety. Astonishingly, 1,819 were pups removed from pregnant sharks. Although the actual number of sharks culled was 2,088, only 460 were considered dangerous, being tiger sharks.

If you then consider that the culling programs spanned 17 years, we are talking about 27 tiger sharks killed per year, across a coastline of 1,200 kilometres, which equates to one tiger shark every 45 kilometres. In Queensland, where 366 bull sharks were killed in one year, over a stretch of just 300 kilometres, the average number of bull sharks killed is one every 0.8 kilometres, which is 50 times the rate of dangerous sharks killed in Hawaii.

It is scandalous that shark scientists perpetuate the myth that shark culls don’t work.

Thankfully, Queensland is doing an excellent job of reducing the risk of shark attack.

Tragically, we have to keep asking the NSW government how many more shark attacks we will have to endure, before they finally accept that it is impossible to protect sharks and people.

It’s OK to be scared. It’s OK to admit you are fearful. Surf a wave pool. Swim in pool. No one cares. Just remember no matter how important you are on land, in the ocean you are merely food.

Strayan Cunt

I see an article by a Webber and I just ignore and move on, simples

gary

No truer words have been spoken. The entire Bondi retro culture 80’s thing needs to be put away to die. It wasn’t that great.

Ramathorn

Your own words in the podcast “The media was oddly enough, the online experience was probably more traumatic than the experience of witnessing a shark attack”. How does that fit in with your views on “The Psychology of Self Deception” or your views on the news coverage of the beheadings in Belfast??

Brutus

Ok , firstly to call Whish Wilson , some kind of elite and ignores peoples sufferings…..just because he has a different view…is so fucken lame….he’s one of the best Pollies we have….especially on green/environment issues , which shark are part of…..to try and paint him as some kinda elite with little or no knowledge of him as a person…tragic Dan assassinates Whish-Wilson based on …..Dan’s own personal summation of a couple of stories and paint Pete as some kinda new age woke bloke……well imagine if we /I called you out on the Webber as surfing royalty…..the scam ripoff of the Webber pool and a Million plus $’s going missing or……character assignations in the media/Public….well you just went there……to make a point about shark culling?

“However, in the context of the culture war, it was a clear shot across the bow of Anglo Australians, who are reminded incessantly that their ancestors colonised the continent at great expense to the original inhabitants.”

Then the above,I get people who struggle with Australias history of colonialism and the resulting consequences of colonialism on Australias First Nations peoples…and also the resulting ,”us and them”…….like the Voice……so what’s an Australian – one who embraces 50K years of continuing culture , and also it’s colonial past….warts and all…..then there are those who reject the invitation by First Nations people to embrace the oldest living culture on Earth ,colonialism an all…….so we work towards reconciliation….or, you are what we call a New Australian , one that yet ,doesn’t have the education of past generations/History….but maybe there is hope with their children…….of becoming an Australian.

Back to the Sharks…..LOL……using Hawaii as a reference point…a tiny Island VS a Huge Continent….is just plain idiotic……so what’s the present crisis in Ballina ?

Just for the record……when you mention Sea Shepherd….not sure you know , but whale migration 1983…300….2024….30,000 +…….all because Sea Shepherd took on the Japanese Whalers…..so when you see the whale migration each year up the East Coast…thanx Capt Watson!

deeks

If they eased up on the ” welcome to country ” shit we’d all be better off. And didn’t try to be Oakland rappers.

Brutus

yeah I have been lobbying for years against Welcome to Country……why would Australia’s First Nations people welcome New Australians to Country…better to say, ” you are not welcome to Country?”….and thats why when you New Australians can’t accept welcome to country….well that’s your problem and not an Australian problem…which is why pauline resonates with people so much…racist cunts!

deeks

If not liking dickheads and money grubbers and wanna be rappers is rascist. I’m the biggest rascist on here

Barrelled

You should try to see both sides of the argument is what I believe Mo is saying here. Or just continue on being a prick about it if you prefer.

deeks

Call me what you want…can’t stand white or black dickheads money grubbers and wannabe rappers.

Brutus

so what’s that got to do with Welcome to Country?

deeks

They’re in the 1st bracket…you know as well as I do that It’s been exploited by a select few to make a shitload of cash. The media and wokeywoke cunts lap it up. I’m more frustrated than a racist I think. When I see the same rhetoric used by koorie AND gubbas. People get greedy in power.

Brutus

Ok Deeks…just so ya know, I am just trying to show you that Welcome to country is a beautiful invitation for all the embrace and be part of the Worlds oldest living culture…and become an Australian, with a 50K year living culture.

I agree with you that people will abuse and rip off the System , but they are a small majority so don’t judge a whole culture / WTC on a minority……that’s why it’s really interesting to learn from Blackfellas/Elders the actual 50k+ years of social culture……and not the urban/corrupted culture versions!

deeks

Yeah totally agree with that. Sorry for any offence.

Brutus

absolutely no offence…as you know only too well, so much misinformation etc….really confusing times for some/most…..that’s what i like about BG……..different points of view…so lets chat and try not to get personal,LOL!

Barrelled

Ha! Wasn’t meant as a dig.

Brutus

hey it’s Ok to be a racist…….just not sure who you are aiming the dickhead/money grubbers and wanna be rappers at……seems like a white mans disease!

Sellme fitzgobbins

More scandalous that b grade journalists think they know more than scientists…..
I guess covid already proved this

Fartblossom

Has anyone asked Greta Thunberg her opinion on the topic? I think we should do whatever she says.

JSC

Australia can have surfing.

Australia can have sharks.

Australia cannot have surfing AND sharks.

Barrelled

Can they have you and your idiotic statements?

JSC

Do you want me to block you?

Contribute intelligently to the discussion or shut the fuck up.

Thank You.

Barrelled

You’ve blocked me once already so I could care less. That said, your childish approach to anyone who calls you out speaks volumes about how much of a pussy ass little cunt you actually are.
Stating there can’t be sharks in Australia is the definition of unintelligent.

Blowin

He is a brutally stupid person. A blunt force dumb cunt.

Stupid, smug and cowardly.

Not exactly a winning combination. Yuck.

Brutus

amazing that good ol boy JSC…….has now left….he spat the dummy when I pointed out that he was very trumpian in his views on sharks in Australia……if nature gets in the road of a good time…well…exterminate…..LOL…

Pauly Matt War-Shore

Pretty hard to imagine literally anyone giving a fuck if you blocked them.

Barrelled

Guy probably can’t keep track of how many people he’s blocked.

Picard Madeoff

One of my Aussie mates was giving me shit this weekend about why I don’t go surfing in his country as he(non surfer, Sydney Grammer school cunt) thinks his beaches are superior to southern California. He is completely unaware of the shark problem in Oz versus California where the juvenile whites coexist with surfers… most of the time. And of course we have the Wedge https://uploads.disquscdn.c…

Blowin

The wedge is California’s version of Solander / Ours.

An ugly, misshapen lump of a wave that would probably be virtually unsurfed if it wasn’t for photography and the infamy derived from riding it. A wave where the risk is entirely disproportionate to the return.

See also : Deadman’s

There’s always some who enjoy such a place but the majority is there for Insta fame and spectacle. They are welcome to it.

Picard Madeoff

Mrs Madeoff wanted to go out there yesterday afternoon after we spent the the morning surfing elsewhere on more hospitable waves. The kids body surfing that wave never cease to amaze me while their fathers did the same long before IG, FB or X existed.

Trev

I would say the wedge is CA’s version of Shark Island. These are the two slab waves made famous by Bodyboarders long before Instagram or digital cameras.

deeks

No fucken way !

Sellme fitzgobbins

You can stay safe in America with yout opinions dipshit

finally blocked by jsc ,thankfully wont have to read his moronic statements and blatant self marketing

Barrelled

Blocked me today too. I’m devastated.

Sellme fitzgobbins

It seems like you don’t have to read their dribble either once blocked , great feature!

Barrelled

“…..a Great White hanging off a baited hook.”

Can we try not to print statements that are patently false? It is a FACT that GW’s eat GW’s. Statements to the contrary are simply untrue. It’s like saying the Webber clan aren’t the Aussie version of the Whittaker family.

Stanislav Franck

Another fucking ridiculous “article” in the SMH by the head academic at The Fish Lab, in Macquarie Univ. They’ll perpetuate all kinds of nonsense to keep their funding coming.

Even uses “research” from Sea Shepherd as his primary source (which I read and is equally as flimsy as his article). Fuck me, where to start? An academic using Sea Shepherd as his go to source? And Sea Shepherd? That’s like saying a little bit of govt. control can benefit society, then citing North Korea and Kim Jong-un!

https://www.smh.com.au/environment/conservation/we-have-the-technology-to-prevent-shark-bites-let-s-use-it-to-save-lives-20260614-p606mr.html

And to add to it, both article in SMH say it’s a mystery why encounters/attacks are increasing. A mystery? Oh, how about, and I quote: “The legal blanket covers both recreational and commercial fishing without exception. Under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act 1999 and corresponding state fisheries laws, it is strictly forbidden to target, catch, keep, or kill a great white shark.”

Might be a reason their numbers are growing? Maybe? You reckon? Perhaps?

Barrelled

Seeing that GW’s have never been fished commercially or extensively, do you really think a fishing ban is the reason the numbers have increased?

Blowin

Yes. Great Whites were fished until they were so rare as to be more mythological than real. The fishing stopped, the whites are back.

Repenter

Why were they fished? What suddenly made people decide that there were not enough?

On the NE coast of the ol’ USA there were a handful of attacks in the last decade. Smaller area, cold murkyish water, with a lot less people playing in it that the whole of Australia. The rise in “encounters” was blamed on the protection of marine mammals, which increased the seal population, and more GWs hanging out.

Barrelled

What was the fishery though? I’m unaware of any commercial use that would decrease numbers.

Stanislav Franck

The two go hand in hand. If the numbers/interactions aren’t an issue, as they weren’t prior to the late 90s, there’s no reason to go out of your way to fish them. But if numbers start growing for whatever reason (say, govt. protection), then you have reason to fish them. It’s not rocket science.

This year in Japan, there have been more bear attacks and sightings than ever, since recording started. As a result, multiple prefectural govts. have allowed controlled hunting of bears. What do you think would happen if the Japan govt. protected all bears, and banned any type of hunting, shooting, capturing etc? You reckon maybe, just maybe, there might be more attacks?

Picard Madeoff

WAIT, WHAT? Japanese bears are surfing and getting shot in the act? Tell me this isn’t true!

Ramathorn

Does the pope wear a hubcap?

Does the pope shit in the woods

Does the pope have his hand in a babies shit nappy

deeks

Does the pope shit on dudes…probably

Blowin

The marine scientist from the fish lab is in the paper again today. He has written an article in which he is flat-out lying. Not hedging his opinion, not being misinformed, he is LYING.

At one point he categorically states that sharks do not eat people. This is a lie.

Crazy the way that institutional credibility is treated as a disposable weapon in the battle for ideological dominance.

I give that cunt zero stars out of five.

https://removepaywalls.com/https://www.smh.com.au/environment/conservation/we-have-the-technology-to-prevent-shark-bites-let-s-use-it-to-save-lives-20260614-p606mr.html

Stanislav Franck

Same article I linked above. Yeah, the mis/disinformation is extraordinary considering his job

Brutus

pretty ironic that the 4 people attacked in Australia during the last month or so…..just bites, didn’t eat the people…..same at Coodjee…..go figure?

Strider's Gobble Neck

Trying to make reason with a publication regarding shark numbers, that also tells Australians to accept their Indian invaders making a mess of their country, is a tall order.

The SMH and other institutions give not one care about your lives, mates!

Travis Edgar

I heard a statistic that cows kill more people than sharks do…. Pretty sure I’d rather be killed by a cow!

Sean Connery

Thats the number one cause of death for young males in New Zealand.

Strayan Cunt

Not true mate that would be misadventure by sheep

Michael Flatlately

Chewed to cud, then brought back up and chewed again – no thanks.
