“I saw the shark come out of the water and it was one of the biggest I’ve ever seen. It actually grabbed one of the girls and started dragging her around."
A little after eleven this morn, and just as your ol pal DR was exiting the water a few clicks north, a woman was attacked by a suspected Great White at Coogee Beach, one of the few waveless beaches in Sydney’s east.
A pal’s wife was doin’ the beach thing on what is a pretty glorious ol seventy degree winter’s day when the ocean erupted between the flags fifty yards away. She described the screams as “horrific.”
Off-duty lifeguard Charlie Virco, 22, dragged the woman onto his paddle board while three other swimmers went to help her.
“I saw the shark come out of the water and it was one of the biggest I’ve ever seen,” he told 9News. “It actually grabbed one of the girls and started dragging her around. I was pretty scared.”
NSW Police said the woman suffered serious injuries to her arm and leg. Members of the public and officers provided first aid before paramedics arrived, and she was airlifted by helicopter to hozzy, a few minutes by bird away.
The attack happened four weeks after shark nets were removed from the season and, according to Dr Chris Pepin-Neff shark policy expert at the University of Sydney, the shark was probs a Gee Dub. He described the attack as “very, very strange.”
It ain’t that strange.
Earlier in the year there were four shark attacks around Sydney in 48 hours.
Just like we had in January, the conditions are perfect for the sharks to be along the beaches.
Update: shortly after the attack, a drone pilot filmed a Great White swimming nearby.

“Agriculture Minister Tara Moriarty left the door open to a shark cull following Saturday’s shock attack”
https://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/calls-for-culls-after-unique-and-different-shark-attack-off-sydney-beach/mxlmly8o5
About time –
An Annual Cull Policy (ACP) for large, 3 meter plus sharks would mean many of the 63 people killed by large sharks in Australia since 1999 would still be alive today –
Better late than never –
Lets just train a few orcas – release a few from captivity – they will fucking love it just crusin Sydney to Goldie or wherever tasting liver
It be a game for them
By all accounts the sharks just fuck off when orcas move in
even 18 months ago a mate mentioned jetskis from treach to hawks over 12 counted 4m plus in one run
“very, very strange.”
What’s strange is most people on here know very well 10am is pretty much the average time of attacks. And in clear water.
YET, a cunt that does this full time and is his academic achievement, does not!
10years of solid data at this fucks fingertips every single day at work and that’s the comment.
Fk me dead.
Dez just keeps on keeping on , aiming for a job writing for The Australian (re The Israelian) , all about culling of sharks and Brown people
Neff’s “expertise” comes from his background in political science and public policy. He’s not a marine biologist, nor an oceanographer. He has zero expertise in the behaviour of sharks.
Next time a pitbull dog mauls or kills somebody, why don’t we NOT put it down, but just film it wondering around after, with a drone?
i mean the person walked into that backyard.. which is their domain?
Meanwhile Japan culling bears that are attacking people..weren’t they here first though?
As funny as that is here, where we hold no sway, that sort of language will only move us away from our goal.
It’s not the sort of language that the frontline advocates can ever use, or else it they’ll scare away potential helpers to the cause.
Charlie is a real hero
Such a fucked situation. Crazy thing is that if someone “important” or well loved gets attacked then the entire nature of the convo changes
locals could always put down their beers and do something about it
There are none
Chai lattes you mean? It’s the northern beaches
On another but still related note. SW put up a cracker doc today of all days. South Oz crew are another breed of core.
https://youtu.be/N5GmWS_Ww14?si=zK9CLBxLp5NvBRcI
Good on SW for taking up the cause, and creating the sort of media that can sway opinions.
That’s such an epic film. The crew who are still surfing have reached another level of brave / zen.
Surfing in a lot of parts of Australia is fast becoming a daily stoic Mememto Mori (remember death) exercise.
Its juzt very bad luck!!
sharks back yard!!
Really strange!!
free jerkistine!!
Mens abortion rights!!
Is the Brown Sludge Water Pro finishing up tonight? I will set me alarm for 3am if it is fellas
So in these bleak times when feel good stories seem hard to find let me tell you about the blossoming bond between a Straya Cunt and a young Brazzo fella. So about 8 months ago our builder took on a Brazzo as a labourer who is only 21 and living down here on his own, hes a good young fella who surfs really good so I have taken him under my wing so to speak.
I take him surfing and have been trying to teach him how not to be a one man crowd in pretty empty lineups which has been both frustrating but rewarding. He is also a good looking little devil so I was surprised when he said he was having trouble picking up Strayan chicks. Its cuz you don’t speako da lingo bruz I told him so we embarked on a journey of me teaching him English/Strayan.
When we are on site, surfing, driving around or whatever he will point at something and ask me what it is called down here. Now cuz I’m a bit of a cunt I will openly admit to selling him some lemons at times, like when I told him witches hats on site are actually called Tylers dildos. Faaaaark it was funny when we all listened to him ask the builder where exactly he wanted him to set out Tylers dildos hahaha
He has made massive progress though and you can imagine my pride on Friday morning when he bounded over to me with a huge smile on his face and announced in heavily accented but very clear Strayan “Oi cunt guess who lucked into a root last night?” He is slowly becoming one of us haha yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew
Let’s see how he is Monday, after the burn’s come on.
You can only teach young fellas so much and then it comes down to experiences, both good and bad mate
Doin’ god’s work here, beautiful tale Cunnox. Gave me a few hearty laughs. Tylers dilly is amazing.
I forgot to say his name is Fabrizio but that is way too long for us so now he is just called Fab or Fabio if hes being a cunt
He found $200?
Sit him down to watch Ritualistic Tendancies. Hazza B is a lord
Soooo sick ay
Poor guy is fucked with a cunt of a mentor. You teach how to skip out on work yet?
I love solo brazzzos. Befriended a couple while traveling. Solo with girlfriend and on the same program as me. Just trying to get a quiet wave without the masses. The funny thing was that they felt the same way about brazzo packs as we did. They can’t stand them.
Is there such a thing?
I hope her name wasn’t Mindy!!
She likes them older and better off!!

The bloke with the ‘PHD on the policy of Shark attacks,’ who called the attack “very, very strange”… I don’t need to say any more do I
Now let’s listen to these pricks on the morning shows dribble out exactly like last attacks and deaths.
“Its very strange”
“very rare”
“Incident”
“our research”
“Mistaken identity”…in very clear water?
“swim between the flags”…wait what?
To cull, not to cull. The ex Vegan lefty punk in me says, how dare we, the soft fat middle age-ish privileged asshole says, kill some.
I’d love to see the West Oz model adopted, not the gov version though. Catch one that is nearby after an attack, and sling it’s carcass to a pole out the back of said attack site as a warning to other noah’s. sounds crazy, but it’s said to have worked. Avoid a culll, and study the one shark for one human model.
Edit all the best to the lady, hoping she makes a full recovery.
But they are cannibalistic starting before birth so in reality you’re putting a big ol piece of attractant in the water.
True dat. I wonder if they’d maul a fallen soldier though vs alive?
What a horror for her and everyone involved, hopefully she pulls through.
Really makes you re consider those small clear days. And the murky days. And the dawn and dusk sessions. And the mid morning sessions. And the summer months with the bulls. And the winter months with the whites
Remember when the main advice was avoid dawn and dusk and murky water mate? Heaps of attacks now are occurring in the middle of the day in clear water. The one at my local was at around 1030am with clear blue skies and crystal clear water
Yep there’s countless I can rattle off the top of my head. Mid morning seems to be the time now. Along with the rest of the day
It’s nuts but no idea of a solution, above my pay grade. I will just keep surfing and hope its not my time
It’s all we can do cunno. Every attack rattles me though I must say. Fuck I hope the attackee is ok. Sydney must now be the shark attack city capital of the world. Since Merc last year there has been heaps.
Its skitz cuz you fellas down there seem to be going through the same fucked up thing we experienced up here about 10 years ago
Due to work and me grom my main time to surf is real early in the morning on beachies with barely any cunt around. Surfing a back bank solo sends your brain into such anxiety unless its pumping its a quick 2 and 3 and done these days. A shorey brings a little more comfort cuz at least theres a chance of getting to the beach. Fucked up times ay mate
Fucken oath man. Guessing you are North Coast? The cluster of attacks you had was like 2015 -ish yeah? Remeber surfing at north wall in Ballina heaps as a grom in the mid 90’s on holidays my old boy used to take me and my sis on. Loved the joint. Years later it was a kill zone.
In those same years, i used to love surfing solo down here on beachies like you described, isolated from crowds, just in fucking paradise, any wave I wanted, ensconced by nature. I stopped that a few years ago, and catch way less waves now. Still solo’n when the mid north coast cluster started up, but now, I rarely feel safe in a crowd and all. That said i’m a few hours up from Sydney kinda right between attack hotspots, but that ticking clock is louder each time another attack happens.
Statistically middle of the day is when most people are hit. It’s so strange how the old advice was basically useless as Strayan pointed out. Basically, never be comfortable is the new rule. Especially on the dreamy little clean days like today.
The old rules regarding shark attack were written when Whites were effectively absent and were not particularly true for whites. They were true for bulls and tigers then and still are now.
Mine was at 10:30am. clear water. Head high sets.
My mentor was attacked at 2pm. Clear water.
Both whites.
You got hit by a shark?
Oh yeah. Mauled
He’s the Quint of beach grit. Also works on a fishing boat out of Half Moon Bay.
How many is that for the year?
Too many!
Our kids, kids will study history to understand what it once was. Some will wonder why we done nothing to protect our culture.
Well, we had to be nice to people and do nice things.
Just read that after 2 fatal attacks a month apart at Coogee in 1922 the Govt brought in a £50Aus ($3000Aus these days) shark bounty in the general area.
Should be started up again for a year or so at the spots that there’ve been attacks at over the last while, and a few other places lousy with the buggers too.
Even if they paid $1000 per decent sized shark the numbers could quickly drop by 1000 per $1mil spent.
Very cheap for valuable public safety compared with other Govt spending…
I hope the woman who was hit pulls through and makes a recovery. I’m a bit rattled as I spent a few hours grovelling in the glorious sunshine and tiny surf a few clicks south this morning.
Puts a real shiver through ya when its so close to home ay mate and yeh love and support sent to this latest victim and really hoping she pulls through
And the are STILL 40 watt dimbulbs out there who resolutely maintain the massive proliferation of large sharks in near-shore waters in Australia since 1999 is NOT a problem, that anyone who has an encounter with a large shark is at fault for being stupid enough to go in the water and relying on intuition, religion and pseudoscience to protect themselves from large sharks.
Unbelievably stupid.
Sharks ARE the problem.
How does it compare to being on God’s given land, and walking into the wrong neighbourhood?
Unbelievably stupid?
***** ARE the problem.
Got it.
It is all fucked up, but it is their home, and they were there first.
Before we drag netted the ocean floor resulting in the devastion of all marine ecosystems.
Flake in batter please, I couldn’t give a fuck about the Mercury anymore.
They eat us, we eat them.
We are all full of Cancer anyway…
Yum Yum
They were there first….. Imagine if we said the same about wolves, lions and grizzlies?
People in Western Europe and North America would be getting picked off by wolves, grizzlies and mountain lions on their way to work –
“But it’s their territory – they were there first”
“We have to learn to respect the apex predators”
“He was dumb enough to enter their territory without a Bearbanz bracelet on his ankle”
“We are starting a drone observation programme to assist commuters to get to the office without being killed”
And other such nonsense as more people die from wolf, grizzly and mountain lion encounters as they, like large sharks in near-shore waters in Australia, enjoy legal protection –
it’s called and ecosystem…….like crocodiles here in Australia who kill 2 people every year……
You only see 1 side and are completely closed off to any suggestion that is contrary to your views. And to your point above, anyone roaming around wolf, grizzly, mountain lion cuntry without a 9mm, bear spray, or some other form of protection is a fucking idiot.
ohhhh look out he’ll block you…..he is trumpian and can’t handle it!
Erm, yes – that’s because I know I am right
More victim-blaming nonsense – “When the gal wore a short skirt and no knickers to the pool hall at 03:00, she was shocked when she was raped by a group of men”
Does wearing a short skirt and no knickers make rape legal?
Yeah, I didn’t think so –
Just as people should be able to surf, dive or swim in near-shore Australian waters without fear of being killed by a legally protected large 3 meter plus shark.
Is the first duty of any government to offer protection to the people of a nation-state?
Yes, offering protection is widely considered the fundamental and primary duty of any government. This responsibility is the foundation of the social contract, though different political philosophies emphasize different aspects of what that protection entails:
Physical Protection: Classical theorists like Thomas Hobbes argued that the most basic justification for government is to protect citizens from internal chaos, violence, and external threats. Without this base level of safety, no other societal functions can thrive.
The Australian government is NOT fulfilling the first duty of any government –
Sharks are an external threat to human life.
there ya go again……in the face of logic….”Erm, yes – that’s because I know I am right,”…..just like trump….
To be fair, sharks are doing what they do – attack things to eat. If that makes them the problem, then rain beng wet is a problem also. The protection measures seem to have worked and they are not endangered anymore hence the numbers being up.
The point is – there has been a massive proliferation of large sharks in near-shore Australian waters since legislative protections were passed in 1999.
An annual cull of large 3 meter plus sharks would ensure fewer injuries and lives lost, while having a minimal effect on the ecosystem as a whole – look how quickly shark numbers recovered after 1999 and the end of all commercial shark fishing in Australia.
If this Annual Cull Policy (ACP) had been in effect since 1999, many of the 63 people killed by sharks in Australia since 1999 would still be alive today – not dead.
I’m pro-cull, also pro a wide fishing ban in recreational areas, but not at all sure swimming laps 30m off the beach is a good idea, particularly when the nets are in.
I agree on the policy meaning more whites which clearly means potential for more attacks. There is one variable which we can’t infer looking at the attack stats, it’s more people in the water part. Sharks gonna shark, more of them means more shark behaviour. We are in the water in x10 numbers since 1999, this has to be a factor also and therefore I’m anti cull, even though it’d make me feel safer.
Good point
Death ain’t the only outcome. Life without the use of limbs can be quite challenging
Your absolute desire for culling sharks in Australia is just fucking odd.
A desire to save lives is “odd”?
I find it much more “odd” that people are indifferent or opposed to a cull of large 3 meter plus sharks in near -shore waters around Australia and don’t particularly seem to care that current laws and statues favour the health, safety and well being of large sharks over human beings.
Indicative of a lack of rational cognitive process.
your supposed self proclaimed , rational cognitive process is a mirror of the trumpian way….fear , then make up a theory to support a way of possibly getting rid of the fear…LOL…..I wonder if you understand the idea of ecosystems?
still rabbiting on……your theory of killing all sharks over 3m , is ,well, very trumpian…..bit like nuking a Hurricane,LOL!
To even think that culling would work , and make the ocean 100% safe, for swimmers/divers/surfers is just plain delusional…..but like ol trumpy …” we won, they will surrender, it’s all over in 2-3 days…..your American rationale has seeped here onto BG…..how the fuck could you guarantee…”many of the of the 63 people would be still alive today”…minimal affect on the ecosystem,LOL…….based on what science or did ya make it up like….ya beerless leader,LOL?
I said it many times – I have nothing to do with Donald Trump.
I did not vote for him and I would never vote for Trump for anything.
The fact that you keep trying to connect John Seaton Callahan to Donald Trump is laughable and indicative your thought process is failing –
Try staying on topic, if you are not easily distracted by Trump and his nonsense – thanks!
stay on topic…LOL…….all I have pointed out is you are an American commenting on Australian Ecosystems/sharks froma perspective that mirrors trumps thinking….which is nonsense a sis yours on sharks….your theory of culling 3m plus sharks is just nonsensical……you have very little knowledge on sharks…….and when you say ,” minimum affect on ecosystem,” FFS ask the people in Reuinion Island!
Uneducated, tiresome and deeply not interesting – blocked
so you cannot address the illogical shit you post?
