It was the wildest run of shark attacks I can remember and, oowee, there’s been plenty of competition these last couple of decades.
Over the course of forty eight hours in January, five people were attacked by bull sharks. A twelve-year-old boy Nico Antic was killed and a young man, Andre de Ruyter, was revived on the white sands of Manly beach by a passing professor who is the 2IC in a trauma surgery ward.

Public response was mostly the ol it’s-their-environment-take-your-chances-buddy with no stomach for the obvious solution of regular bull shark culls, this approach articulated in an opinion piece in the Sydney Morning Herald that found a silver lining in the deaths of Nico Antic and Mercury Psillakis.
“If a positive can be taken from this year’s shark incidents, it will be to reverse some assumptions and restore respect for the ocean. It’s not our swimming pool. It was never ours to take away.”
One man who is happy to push back against the prevailing anti-human attitudes is the Newcastle fisherman Joel Nancarrow aka Hunter Shark Jaw Restoration.
One week before Nico Antic was attacked he’d caught a ten-foot bull shark near Newcastle and warned his followers there was a migration of ’em headed to Sydney.
“This is not the week to be swimming anywhere near river mouths or dirty water in the surf,” he said.
To prove how riddled Sydney Harbour is with em, he pulled a half-ton bull out of the drink just off the beach at Camp Cove, a few hundred metres from where Nico was killed.
Now, says Nancarrow, the bull sharks are back on the move.

We have had a lot of rain the last week making conditions perfect for the sharks to travel. We now have a strong westerly wind for the next few days which will mean the rest of the mullet will leave all the estuary systems from Sydney and start their journey north, these 3 factors have unfortunately lined up with the time the bull sharks will also be looking to head north.
Just like we had in January, the conditions are perfect for the sharks to be along the beaches.
They will likely stop once they reach the good water around port Mac/south west rocks. This will mean large quantities of bull sharks in these areas for at least 3 weeks yet.
The next week is a real danger period along the beaches.

I said I would get 4 sharks in 4 days to show that 4 in 4 months is an absolute disaster of a result.
We got 3 yesterday and 1 on Thursday in 2 different locations.
I also got one on Sunday and one on Monday that I didn’t mention in my little challenge. That’s 6 in 4 days consisting of 4 bullsharks and 2 spinner whalers. We also lost 1 bull and a spinner shark yesterday.
The DPI research team was given a grant to target them in NSW waters. Not just SYDNEY!!!!!!
They had a go up north but quickly gave up and retreated to the comfort of their own post code where they got a grand total of 4 sharks in 120 days after deploying 8000 hooks, myself and Lewis armed with 1 hook
Each, AND having to catch our own bait caught 3 and lost 2, including this absolute monster of a female bullshark, her girth was like nothing I’ve experienced and her head is hugeeeeeee!!!!!!
The trip yesterday cost us a total of $580 and we caught 3/4 of what the team that was given 4.2million dollars caught, we also have the videos to prove it which we haven’t even seen from the dpi, shouldn’t the sizes of the bulls they caught be mentioned since it was a grant to prioritize public safety?
Since January, we have now caught 32 sharks, 30 Of them being bull sharks.
I have caught them in over 8 different estuaries and most of the well known coastal towns. It’s cost me a total of just over $29000 in travel/gear/food and I’ve done just over 40000kms driving.
I will do it all again next season and get even more results.
My question is, if a recreational fisherman making memories and videos to spread awareness is happy to spend the time away from his family and the money I have spent to make sure people are made aware of a genuine issue, how come departments like the DPI, NSW fisheries and Sharksmart are not able to mirror similar results and instead focus
On trying to make me out to be the bad guy spreading fear and get me to shut my mouth?

This past Monday evening I saw a shark hit a fish at the surface, about 20m away, right on the peak I was about to paddle over to. I stayed where I was.
Thew water has been pretty dirty last couple days with the rain flushing stuff out of the river.
Even if it wasn’t heavily onshore, I don’t think I’d feel comfortable going out back.
All the old locals were grumbling about ‘bullshark water’, and I’ll respect that.
Friend got smacked in the paw by a stingray yesterday, while basically crawling through shallow water for his usual dawn swim. He was a bit of celebrity this morning.

No clue about the legality of it but im guessing it all ends up at an asian dinner table, or as food supplements.

I was rewatching Martin McDonagh’s meta-modern masterpiece, Seven Psychopaths, and it got me thinking of you because the protagonist is a heavy-drinking, Irish, writer (with possible writer’s block). And then it got me thinking of another meta-modern piece of filmmaking, possibly the most meta of them all up until that point , Olivier Assayas’ Irma Vep (HBO miniseries, 2022). I Seem to remember you saying something about having a French partner, maybe I’m mixing that up with something else, but if not then she may have enjoyed it as much as you.
Anyway, what was your impression of it? Of course any series with Alicia Vikander AND Adria Arjona is going to be highly rated, but did it surpass expectations? Did you watch it twice, like I did, to revel in the fact that film has finally gotten way past postmodernism and is interesting snd thought-provoking again?
Would love to hear your thoughts on both McDonagh and Irma Vep.

I just googled Letterboxd to see what it was. An interesting concept. A few years ago I would have considered joining up, but these days I’m in a cranky mood about the massive amount of films being made that I have no interest in. Such as all the horror films, and I never watch any horror. That’s just an example. I like some weird films being made, but most are not my type of weird.
Hopefully it’s just a phase and I get past it at some point. Acceptance. I’ll let you know if I do join up, because it’s a cool concept.
What I do instead is look at YouTube essays by wannabe filmmakers who break down difficult or interesting films. Saw a couple essays which helped me to understand what Mullholland Drive (amazing film) was about and I’m now a supporter of this form of media. I like social sciences and what makes people tick or create, so these behind the scenes are always interesting.
This is exactly why you should join.
Before Letterboxd or always struggled to find films to watch, now I’ve got over a thousand films on my watchlist.
That’s just from following the likes of said utubers, their followers on the app and going through their lists and reviews and cherrry picking things of interest. You can really zone into your taste.
You don’t have to log reviews either, but I do very short ones mainly to remind myself.

I spent a couple nights in Nimbin a few years ago. Very quiet and very pleasant. Could have easily spent even more time had I known any locals to show me around.
Some outsider hippy chick put on an excellent, little concert in the local theatre. Very lovely and chill music. I might have enjoyed it if it wasn 8°C inside the fuxkin theatre. Even the aussies had to leave to go and get warmth around the fire-barrels outside. The last performer only had an audience of me, the hippy chick (quite beautiful) and the other performers. In ol Andre’s case, it was another surfer diving into the drink to get him back to shore, the prof walking by on the promenade who’d work on him on the beach and emergency crews who met the ambo half way to the hozzy to fill him up with fresh pints of blood.
