Teen surf star allegedly kicked in the head, branded a ‘pedophile’ and told he’d be killed by teammates sues school

A seventeen-year-old competitive surfer at a Long Beach high school was beaten by three of his own teammates, told he was gonna be killed, publicly smeared as a pedophile and, according to a new lawsuit, abandoned by the school administrators.

William Frey, a shredder on the Wilson High School’s surf team, filed suit this month in Los Angeles Superior Court alleging the beating occurred on April 17, 2025, and that harassment and threats continued well after.

Frey was at his family home with the younger sister of his teammate Owen Keller — Ainsley, who was 15 — when she received a call from her brother.

With the phone on speaker, Owen Keller demanded to know where Ainsley was, then allegedly threatened Frey directly: “Tell that motherfucker that if you’re with him I’m going to beat the shit out of him because I’m not fucken playing.”

Keller arrived at Frey’s home, yelling that he was going to kill him, and was told to leave before returning with two more surf team members.

The lawsuit alleges teammates Samuel Katz and Keller punched and kicked Frey 15 to 20 times each in the head. A third teammate, Joseph Ziroli, is alleged to have filmed the attack at Keller’s direction. The video was then shared on the surf team’s Snapchat channel.

Wilson High principal Rebecca Caverly was notified of the assault by Frey’s mother, Celinda Bradley, who presented evidence including threatening texts and audio recordings. Assistant principal Keith Roberson told Bradley there was little he could do because the assault had happened off campus.

A restraining order issued by Los Angeles Superior Court on April 25 required the three alleged attackers to stay at least 25 yards from Frey at all times.

The district, the suit alleges, “failed to implement any meaningful measures to enforce” the order.

All three students were permitted to continue attending class, participate in surf team activities and join in senior events. The school’s “safety plan” for Frey consisted of requiring him to arrive ten minutes late and leave ten minutes early.

Classmates called Frey a pedophile ’cause of the two-year age gap between him and Ainsley Keller and the epithet spread through the school community.

On May 5, an anonymous death threat appeared in Wilson High’s official “Say Something” reporting app: “I’m going to kill William Frey.”

The temporary restraining orders were eventually dismissed.

Frey has since relocated to a new town, understandably, given the heat.

Named as defendants in the suit are the Long Beach Unified School District, principal Caverly, assistant principal Roberson, the three alleged attackers and their parents. The suit seeks general, special, punitive and compensatory damages.
