The world’s best surfers are currently enjoying a one month hiatus, ahead of Tahiti Pro, but much turmoil floats just over the horizon including, particularly for Griffin Colapinto, his brother Crosby, their friend Cole Houshmand, Gabby Bryan, Carissa Moore, Sawyer Lindblad, Caitlin Simmers, Lakey Peterson, Caroline Marks and those others who call the United States or Hawaii home including, also, Jake Marshall and Alyssa Spencer.
Namely, should firm Thanksgiving plans be made with family and friends or should it all, rudely, remain wait-and-see?
The holiday, which celebrates gratitude toward America’s indigenous populations, is usually observed by going to aunt’s or uncle’s houses, or sometimes grandma and grandpa’s, and eating turkey, taters and stuffing. The Dallas Cowboys or Detroit Lions are also enjoyed.
Last week, however, scheduling became more difficult for the aforementioned U.S. surfers after the World Surf League added Cloud 9 to the Championship Tour then bumped the Abu Dhabi Pro to November 25 – 29th in order to accommodate the war in Iran.
Thanksgiving this year falls on November 26th and the Colapintos et. al. might have flown family and friends to the United Arab Emirates capital to eat al machboos, hummus and falafal but now things are really up in the air after U.S. President Donald J. Trump declared the ceasefire betwixt America and Iran over.
Speaking at a NATO summit in Turkey, ironically, Trump declared, “I don’t want to deal with (the Iranians) anymore, they’re scum. They’re sick people, they’re led by sick people… As far as I’m concerned, it’s over.”
Hope was, of course, that Trump’s forever war would be wrapped up by late November but now missiles are, again, raining on Tehran which is, in turn, is firing at U.S. regional allies including the U.A.E.

The options, as I see them:
- Purchase fully refundable tickets for family and friends to Abu Dhabi (not cheap).
- RSVP for Thanksgiving celebration back home, gambling that the war will continue.
- Be sort of slithery and rude and noncommittal.
