Swellframe, the anti-phone surf forecast that hangs on your wall, blew past its Kickstarter goal in 24 hours. Get one before early birds are gone.
Remember when the surf check was the purest moment of a surfer’s day? You looked at the ocean, or at worst out the window, and the ocean told you the truth.
Now the surf check is a hostage negotiation with your phone. You open one forecast app and forty minutes later you’re watching a finless midlength clip, reading a comment war about localism, and absorbing push notifications from apps you don’t remember installing. The tide chart? Never found it. The session? Missed it.
Two surfers from the Asbury Park stretch of New Jersey decided the fix wasn’t another app. It was less app. No app, actually. Tommy Ihnken is a former pro-surfer and the star of BeachGrit’s beloved New Jersey wetsuit fairytale. Flo Meyer is a German software builder who washed ashore and never left.
Their answer is Swellframe: a handsome little e-ink display that hangs on your wall and shows your local break’s forecast, always on. Waves, wind, tide, best window to paddle out. It updates itself over WiFi and runs six-plus months on a single charge. And here is the whole point: it never pings you, never scrolls, never shows you anything except the surf. You glance at it the way your grandfather glanced at a barometer, then you go about your life.
“We’re not trying to kill surf apps,” says Flo. “When a real swell lines up, we’re all going deep in the apps like everyone else. Swellframe is for the other 360 days, the daily check. We just want that to stop costing surfers an hour of screen time.”
Blasphemy or genius, the market has voted. The pair launched on Kickstarter on June 30 and cleared their funding goal almost immediately. The campaign now sits at more than 160 per cent funded with 200-plus backers, climbing daily. Each unit is designed and assembled by the boys themselves in Ocean, NJ, which is either charming artisanal commitment or a supply-chain liability, depending on how fast the campaign keeps growing.
And surf, it turns out, is just the opening act. The two are already teasing the same always-on treatment for the rest of the saltwater-brained population (fishing, sailing, scuba, kiteboarding and more) and letting people vote on what gets built next at swellframe.co/forecasts. One frame on the wall, every forecast that runs your life outdoors. The fishermen, God help us, may soon be even more insufferable.
The campaign runs until July 31. Early bird units are $97, thirty per cent under the eventual $139 retail, and quantities are limited. They’re on Kickstarter now. Get one before it sells out.

I would say “take my money”, but it’s not available in Aus yet.
Good call out. We originally had it for Europe and the US only, but based on growing demand it’s now available for Australia and NZ on Kickstarter also, yewwwww!
Going to have to have a METRIC units display option if you want to sell this device outside the United States –
Very good spot. We indeed allow you to swap the visuals between metric and imperial.
This a HUGE BREAKTHROUGH in Technology, and ALL of the Surf Clubs here are onboard.
No more is the surf check is a hostage negotiation with your phone.
Buy another phone shaped device instead, but the display is SHIT but bigger, and the battery lasts longer and you can hang it like a painting on your wall.
Eyes hate this simple device.
Let’s go! We are here for it. Get yours at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/swellframe-launch/swellframe-the-always-on-surf-forecast-display
I’ll wait for the temu version
what if we are the Temu version?
Being the owners are from mainland USA does that mean every time I go to the beach in Australia expecting 4 foot waves I will find disappointing 2 foot waves? Or will they do like Surfline does and just double the wave size exclusively for USA mainland surfers?
Hahaha! Love it. We could make it even worse. Or not?
What advantages does this have over my invention, a two-in-one shoe horn / toilet brush?
Don’t have to bleach your no-show socks at the end of every day.
you gotta get a bottle opener on that bad boy.
Mick collab!!!
this is the million dollar idea. Doing it now: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/swellframe-launch/swellframe-the-always-on-surf-forecast-display

I’ve got a legit billion dollar App idea.
Sat on it for about 5 years. The potential feels better than the realty of actual work to establish it.

Washed into NJ and never left ? Very interesting.
Good luck on the project. Hope that you find your audience.
Thanks man. We are stoked about the feedback so far.
Are the wave height units measured in german legs? If not, im out.
I don’t know how they think they’re going to fit Jason Statham in such a small frame. Hard pass
Since I am indeed German I am happy to offer the german legs scale as an option.
