Jubilation in Canada and Hawaii, this morning, but also hangovers after Hawaii’s Seth Moniz and Canada’s Erin Brooks took out the Tahiti Pro, each delivering stunning performances in fairly good conditions. It wasn’t the giant ragged Teahupo’o of yesterday wherein 54-year-old Kelly Slater punched Father Time in the face but it also wasn’t tiny baby Teahupo’o wherein Brazil’s Felipe Toledo pretends to be brave. I suppose it was just right Teahupo’o and Moniz and Brooks really did it.
Brooks came up first against the Ragin’ Israeli Anat Lelior. It was the first time a Star of David had ever appeared anywhere close to a final, much less in one, and Lelior looked the part, threading barrels like they exist on the eastern Mediterranean. She had the 19-year-old Brooks very much on the ropes but with minutes remaining the proud Canadian air dropped into a gem and snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.
“I’m so happy right now. It’s been a tough year so far, I haven’t made many heats, so this feels really good,” she told Strider Wasilewski in the channel, afterward.
The Labatt Blue shower didn’t have time to dry before Hawaii’s Seth Moniz paddled out against his best friend in the entire world Griffin Colapinto in a heat dubbed “Sequel” since the trilogy-making Ethan Ewing was absent.
Both surfers performed admirably but Moniz performed more admirably and won.
“I’ve been waiting a long time for this,” Moniz told Wasilewski in the aftermath. “I put a lot into this. Surfing’s a hard sport. Only one guy wins at a time. I put so much into this good, it feels good that it paid off.”

Slats said he paddled into his biggest wave ever out there, during the comp. Which makes Czermak’s and Drollet’s forays all the more goat out there.
Having surfed a set up (that hospitalized secret agent free/longy/tom tom, along with a plethora of others), with similar things affecting, ‘greatest ever dayze ever’, for decades, what a lot don’t get is, the scariest, death on a stick days are the ‘not a drop of water out of place’ maxing days. The same thing applies where I live now.
Because on the crappy, slop hole days that the rubber necks, the touros, would froth and claim on, usually devoid of ‘locals’, the energy is dissipated all over the place. They can definitely still be dangerous if you don’t really know the place, get caught in the wrong area, take wrong ones etc, in the quest to record and sell ‘the greatest, most elite ever ever human’, whatever. Whatever it is that is on sale, maybe even crinkle cut, organic, tater chips? Or longevity nutrition guides, including a free list of recommended surgeons and stomach ulcer specialists.
All that scattered energy often means multiple chip ins, which actually make it easier if you really know the place, or a one way ticket to doom if you don’t. But those not a drop days focus every drop, and the water solidifies, sets like concrete. Everything is faster, thicker, focused. Everything. Including the looks, the maybe’s. So consequences are at all time high. Czermak and Drollet know only too well, as they patrol and rule the boundary, and go where angels fear to tread.

I spoke to Reef M at Erics house just after this …and when he analyzed how he made it…..he actually used tow fins which are double foiled…fastest he’s ever been and he felt like he was just hanging on the tips of his fins…..truly epic paddle in….nice compilation of big lefts……bring on the Fiji comp..yewww

Some knowledgeable people vs actual statistics…….there has been not one shark fatality in the NW……a few divers have been bitten but that’s it.
Pearl /Abalone/ Crays …Divers yeah a hard group of people……but grubby operation…which isn’t when commercially exploited…do you think fishermen are in a grubby operation?
So the myth of no deaths in the NW from sharks continues…a myth based on Fact!

I’ve heard from some northwest WA crew that it’s creepy as, sharks everywhere.
you should try the station Nth of Gnaraloo…..outside reefs just at the southern tip of Ningaloo reef…it’s not if you see Tigers everyday it’s how many…….the legendds say no one has been attacked by a shark in the NW because there’s so much available food….when you talk to the Pearl divers from up Dampier way….they say you treat the tigers like camp dogs…they are more scared of the giant Groper….as they are territorial and charge divers…..so creepy for some, for others we get to enjot their company along with all the other wildlife!
One thing I did notice during this comp is how all the men, besides little pussy cunt Pip obviously can all turn up and at least have a dig out there. Still a big divide between the top guys and the others but they all have the basics down and can surf a heat.
Its the complete opposite with the Sheilas though and the divide between the top say 6 girls and the rest is FUCKING MASSIVE.I don’t say this lightly but the performances from some of em out there were fucking embarrassing. With Pipe, Cloudies and Chopes making up over a quarter of the tour now you have to at least have the basics of backside tube riding down and be able to compete in hollow lefts if you want to stay on tour.
What their coaches and “teams” should be saying is right you’re fucking off Gayagram for a bit and we are heading off to surf some left pits and get you comfortable getting pitted on your backhand. This whole blowing smoke up their arses and making excuses for them is doing them harm, not good and holding them back. Thats not sexist in anyway its just being honest with people so they have a genuine chance at improving

Agree with your points. I have nothing against women surfing and the female draw, just wish that they had their own tour and didn’t take literal time away from the men’s draw. And it’s not fair to them either, not entertaining for anyone.
Facts. The women could capitalize on their womanhood with their own tour and it’s own different festival vibe something or other.
