It is Finals Day for the World Surf League’s Lexus Trestles Pro there on the famed cobbled stone of Lower Trestles. While the wave breaks in San Diego county, officially, the city of San Clemente lays claim, as it is the closest population center, and San Clementines are very proud of it.
Though you wouldn’t know from watching the 2-3 ft burgers currently rolling in, San Clemente along with neighboring Dana Point and Laguna Beach, slightly north, and the rest of Orange County declared a state of emergency, yesterday, citing damage done to coastal homes and infrastructure from a Hurricane Marie, which made large waves a few weeks ago.
The move allows Orange County officials to request state and federal resources in both repairing and assessing the damage ahead of this winter’s predicted Super El Niño.
Orange County Board of Supervisors Vice Chair Katrina Foley has called on Gov. Gavin Newsom to issue a statewide emergency declaration for Orange County, declaring, “Finally, the County of Orange declared a State of Emergency following the devastating impacts of Hurricane Marie and in preparation for the El Niño storm system. The County’s declaration frees up resources, streamlines permitting, and accelerates our ability to support cities and residents as they face future storm surges this winter.”
She added, “With a super El Nino Storm season coming, we must act now to protect our coast and prepare for historic storms. In Orange County, sand is infrastructure. We need help accelerating sand replenishment and shoreline protection to protect our homes, beaches, and infrastructure.”

One of the worst in modern history being the Great Flood on Jan. 31st 1953, in which a combination of a high spring tide and a severe European windstorm caused a storm tide of the North Sea. The combination of wind, high tide, and low pressure caused the sea (storm surge) to flood land up to 5.6 metres (18 ft 4 in) above mean sea level. It destroyed over 100k buildings and homes, killed thousands and damaged over 1000 miles of coastline in Netherlands, Belgium and UK…..all in one night.

Seems like dredging sand would be extremely complicated in most of orange county due to all the different rocks, reefs, coves, cliffs etc. Just setting up dredge boats, pipes, bulldozers etc would be an ordeal. They’re soo fucked this winter if its bad as “they” claim it’s gonna be.
The whole coast has been hardened and all the rivers depleted and damned.
The beaches are an endangered species.
I just dont feel like theres a ton of sand out there to be dredging around abundantly either. They’re in big trouble…
The same amount of sand that was up on the beaches is still there, just redistributed further out from the heavy wave action.
It’s not as if it disappeared, and left alone it’ll come back on it’s own anyway during the many long periods of light wave action.
Surely the sand has only been washed a couple of hundred yards max offshore like most places after major storms, and can be moved back in using a system similar to this one at Surfers Paradise.
Concentrating on the main sandy beaches, rocky reefs and coves will sort themselves out naturally once the sand is closer.

hardened clay with a regular replenishment from god knows where from. littoral drift even though rivers are damned. plus we’re near the end of the point which substructure has existed over long time deposits from Pitas Creek. Chumash and missionaries used clay for bricks. Most are still standing!

All Californians who don’t live in houses built on the sand at sea level should be the ones pushing for the destroyed homes to not be rebuilt.
After all, its going to be your insurance and taxes which increase to pay for someone else’s fuck up for building on the sand at sea level in the first place.
And insurance companies should stop offering cover to houses in an obvious erosion-prone zone, i.e. on the sand at sea level.
Why should the insurance and taxes in a ‘user-pays’ capitalist society be funding someone else’s lifestyle ?

I’m sure it’s close to impossible to get beachside homes insured now. They’re kicking people off their insurance in Marin County for being in proximity to forests.
And they’ll eventually abandon the entire CA market, as they’re doing in FL.
They probably already have actuarial projections as to when they intend to do so.

I suspect the homeowners will secure government funds along with insurance money to rebuild and thereby increase the values of their homes. Either that or similar to the likes of those effected by the Palisades fires they will be relocated to Palestine, oops I mean SJC, CDM or Laguna Niguel to suffer.

Mr Wart I suspect you speak from a position of knowledge so what is your best guess as to what happens here? My understanding is that they should be able to rebuild, with increased premiums that will affect all of those in the area who are a part of their risk pool?
At the end of the day money talks and B.S. walks. I suspect allocating funds is the real issue of by county / State funding or the private sector is the guess . My guess it’s gonna be such a huge issue taxes will go up, as well as , premiums .The challenge is were does the county/state draw the line of financial responsibility.
