Surf fans now used to a mechanical wave tour stop, per year, are heartbroken, today, after the World Surf League officially pulled the plug on the Abu Dhabi Pro that was set to run soon-ish (I think) citing “current conditions and logistical limitations” in the Middle East.
The stop, which was to follow the Lexus Trestles Pro, there in North County San Diego, would have seen a cut down best-of-the-best of the 2026 Championship Tour surfers compete on what is, arguably, the finest manmade wave in the world.
Located in the spiritual capital of the United Arab Emirates, Surf Abu Dhabi, which opened officially in October 2024, features Kelly Slater Wave Co. technology and allows professional surfers to really showcase how they can anticipate a barrel that they already know exactly where it is going to, well, barrel.
Taking to Instagram, the World Surf League shared the depressing news:
Due to current conditions and logistical limitations, the Surf Abu Dhabi Pro has been removed from the 2026 Championship Tour schedule.
The Championship Tour schedule features 12 events and reflects the original 2026 CT format. We remain committed to 12 events on the 2026 schedule to crown our World Champions, with three throwaways built into the rankings.
Next stop: Lexus Trestles Pro, where the Top 22 men and Top 14 women will be decided for the postseason events in Peniche, Portugal and Cloud 9, Philippines before the CT concludes and World Champions are decided at the Pipe Masters in December.

I flew through Abu Dhabi a few weeks ago. Was not especially afraid of getting shot down but did not like the 3 hour layover because airports can’t just move location. Sitting duck really and some poor guy did get blown up in Dubai when the airport got hit.

I’m saying the crowd dynamic and the tight take off spot and ledge-y drop make it a wave you could get a few with plenty of time and no competition, but like Pipeline effectively that’s never how it goes down.
And also, for whatever it’s worth, Big Rock is a great wave. Maybe you’re too good for it, but I sure as fuck am not, just pretty much never going to get a good one there nowadays so no point in paddling out
