What defines a "waterperson?"
A clip of a kayaker getting really mad at a surfer in the lineup is making the rounds and prompting difficult conversations around dinner tables, at bars and anywhere else waterpeople gather. The spot where the incident took place is unidentified, though looks to be somewhere in California. The swell appears very small, maybe 2+ ft, with two surfers and one kayaker bobbing in the brine.
A very small wave suddenly manifests, one surfer and the kayaker make an effort to catch with the kayaker seeming to have the edge. The surfer lets off the gas, the kayaker appears to be ready to slide when, suddenly, he is pulled off the wave backwards.
He paddles furiously toward the surfer, who might have tugged on the canoe, splashes him, and pokes him with his paddle, before drifting away.
The scene ends there though not around the aforementioned dinner tables and bars, where waterpeople are, once again, forced to confront tough issues. The toughest, of course, is the puzzle “are kayakers waterpeople?”
On one hand, they ply their pastime on water (rivers, lakes and oceans).
On the other, kayaking is totally uncool everywhere save class V rapids.
Furthermore, are all waterpeople brothers and sisters? Distant cousins? Lake people entirely unrelated to river people entirely unrelated to ocean people?
Tough questions leading to tough soul searching days.
