This sort of outdated trash needs to go!

Parker: “My wife is hammered!”

And other important news roiling the Hawaiian islands!

The in-laws are visiting, always a treat. Nice thing about visitors, they see where I live through fresh ideas. It is paradise, kinda. But you can’t help but take stuff for granted. Too many days I find myself driving home in a funk, cursing the universe in general, while forgetting that I live a life better than 99.9% of humanity.

An unfortunate part of visitors is that they always want to do stuff that sounds fun in theory, but sucks in reality. Which is why I’m gonna be dragging a team of non-aquatically inclined boners in kayaks up the Wailua River later today.

I don’t enjoy kayaking. I’ll use them to get somewhere, if I have to. But I don’t find any joy in the act of sitting and paddling. Hard work, too much sun. Boring. But no big deal. I can take time from my “busy” schedule. And they’ve been footing the bill for dinner lately, which I enjoy. Wife’s been pushing to try out some new fancy pants eatery down the road. Damn expensive, even by Hawaii standards.

The food was okay. Overly complicated but unadventurous. The type of place they use top quality fish but slather it in weird foamy sauces. Where the name of every dish is a paragraph. Where they feel the need to tell you exactly which farm they sourced their tomatoes from. Which I think is dumb. I don’t care where my food comes from, so long as it tastes good.

My wife drank two bottles of strong red and a couple glasses of white with dinner. Absolutely hammered. Apparently feeling a tad randy when we got home.

“Heysh bebby, less fuck!” Then passed out snoring on the couch. Very erotic.

Insisted on coming spearfishing with me the following morning. Spent the entire time retching and complaining of “seasickness.”

I’ll admit I wasn’t very polite when she wanted to head in the moment we finally reached the patch of reef we’d spent an hour swimming to.

Speaking of highfalutin Hawaiian eateries, did y’all see they shut down the BeachHouse in Haleiwa?

Place used to be Jameson’s, got bought up and remodeled. Owner, Andy Anderson, played it fast and loose, didn’t bother to get the proper permits.

Put his money into tarting the building up, saved by neglecting the septic system. Now all that shit’s spilling out onto nearby properties.

Anderson was the guy behind the proposed development of a hotel on the same property a few years back. Local residents weren’t into it. Lots of protests, got the idea shut down. Which was probably for the best, since the guy is now almost literally shitting on the local community.

In other totally unrelated Oahu news, divers found some unexploded WWII ordinance a few yards off the beach near Kaena Point. Crazy how much of the stuff is sitting near shore out here. Apparently a hell of a lot more than you’d think. A local Kauai dive spot is notorious for it. Launch was used by the military way back when. They thought it was a good idea to toss unneeded explosives over the side on the way in. Not very forward thinking.

Tyler Kahumoku caught some neat footage of them detonating the device. Definitely did some damage to the reef. But there’s not much more that could’ve been done. You’d have to be a maniac to try and dismantle a bomb that’s been resting on the ocean floor for nearly a century.

Updated: Second Fatal Shark Attack in WA!

Diver killed in shark attack at Mindarie, near Perth. Second fatal attack in five days…

Just two days after the surfer Ben Gerring died from injuries sustained in a Great White attack, a diver has been killed 35 clicks north of Perth.

Witnesses describe the shark as being longer than their twenty-foot long boat.

From WAToday.

WA Police’s Inspector Danny Mulligan revealed on Sunday afternoon that the 60-year-old woman, who was mauled late on Sunday morning, had been with a male diver partner between One and Three-Mile Reefs.

The 43-year-old man said he thought he saw movement in the water and surfaced, where he found the woman with severe injuries – apparently as the result of a shark attack.

Three men in another boat arrived to assist and said they saw the shark and positioned the boat between the creature and the man, enabling him to lift the woman onto the boat the pair were using.

It was these three men who said the shark was longer than their boat. Female great whites have been known to grow to bigger than six metres.

Similar to Tuesday’s fatal attack in Mandurah, twenty minutes before the woman was attacked, Surf Life Saving WA had tweeted that a shark had been spotted in the area.

Public report 3.5m white shark sighted 13:31hrs 05/06, Binningup Boat Ramp, north of Bunbury 3km offshore , heading south.

Six minutes later.

Public report 4.5m white shark sighted 13:33hrs 05/06, Mindarie Beach, Perth Metro 300m offshore, 300-400m off Mindarie Marina .

And, finally:

Fisheries advise shark incident 1km off Mindarie. Beaches closed.

It is understood fisheries officers are set to deploy baited drum lines in the area.

Jordy Smith Fiji Pro
Jody Smith's meat hook gouged hunks of Cloudbreak… | Photo: WSL

Jordy, Kelly’s Bestial Scorn, Day One, Fiji!

Come take flight into nostalgia's comforting time warp at the Fiji Pro!

Do you like taking flight through nostalgia’s comforting time warp?

The Fiji Pro, which ran through the twelve heats of round one today in good enough three-to-five Cloudbreak, fell to its knees for two old favourites, Jordy Smith and Kelly Slater.

Jordy left speckles of dried blood on the jerseys of his opponents, Taj Burrow, who is competing in his last-ever WCT event, and the tawny-haired goofyfooter Adrian Buchan.

Jordy knows the kink of judging better than anyone. The full-wraps, the two brawling turns instead of the fat boring business turns, oh, let me tell you, it gets the judges off their cushions, their hearts feeling a thrilly quickening.

Afterwards, Jordy said, “It’s on! it’s on! The waves were flippin‘ cooking! It’s so bonkers right now!”

Examine Jordy’s nine, here.

The reverie of seeing Jordy as comely stud was interrupted two heats later with the highest scoring heat of the round. Kelly Slater, Kolohe Andino, Sebastian Zietz, averaged almost seven-and-half per wave.

Kelly, riding a lower-rockered version of the Webber banana, looked as happy as a new divorcee eyeing a young soldier on leave from one of America’s wars. Panting, Kelly locked his thighs, and put that damn five-ten Webber… everywhere he wanted. When these surfboards are warmed up fully, “He feels connected to the board from nose to tail,” the shaper had told me a couple of weeks earlier.

Kolohe’s fierce eyes and sandy coarse mopped head gave him the aura of a jungle cat and, but for a wave that extinguished itself prematurely with ten seconds to go, would’ve put out even Kelly’s brush fire.

Watch that heat here!

Emergency: We really need Da Hui!

The Club of Wave Sliders is our only hope!

Do you remember, in the 1970s, when a pack of grubby Australians washed up, unwanted, on Oahu’s North Shore? As chronicled in the 2008 documentary Bustin’ Down the Door, they got some good cracks from the very scary Black Shorts and quickly learnt respeck.

I have spoken lots about this particular time with Da Hui co-founder Eddie Rothman. Whatever opinions or preconceptions you have about him they are likely wrong. Eddie is articulate, he is thoughtful and he cares deeply about Hawaii, as deeply as I have ever seen a person care for a place.

He disagrees with some of the storytelling in Bustin’ Down the Door, particularly the line “bustin’ down the door” as he says, “There was no door to bust down…” but I think agrees that there needed to be order so that the locals would not get chewed up by a burgeoning surf machine and his club provided it.

In any case, Hawaii is, once again, being overrun by detritus from other countries. CNN reports:

Vast amounts of trash have been washing ashore on the state’s once-pristine beaches.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has been trying to keep critical parts of the ocean clear of marine debris, removing 57 tons of it from the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands in 2014. This area is a part of Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, the largest conservation site in the United States.
Despite the government agency’s efforts, Hawaii continues to be plagued by trash, much of it plastic.
Originally it was thought this trash was coming from the 2011 Japanese tsunami but new research suggests it is not.
“Most of what was mapped is common, everyday items that someone haphazardly tossed onto the ground or directly into the water,” Case said.
In short — it’s coming from just about anywhere and everywhere.
With the way the state is positioned geographically, the ocean’s current is carrying massive amounts of plastic waste to Hawaii’s coast.
“These items get caught up in ocean currents and unfortunately much of it eventually lands, mostly on north and east facing shores. Hawaii is recognized around the world for our beautiful beaches. Unfortunately we cannot say they are pristine, because they’ve been so seriously impacted by our trash,” Case added.
Maybe it is time for a Da Hui world tour! They go from capital to capital dishing out slaps and menacing stares. Washington DC, Beijing, Brasilia, Ottowa, etc. All they would have to do is look mealy-mouthed politicians in the eye and problem solved!
Should we crowdfund?
