The scores were fickle but according to the modern judging criteria (favoring critical maneuvers vs. number of maneuvers) the heat outcome was correct. One thing Martin Potter
talks about nonstop is how in the old days, the number of turns counted
more than how critical each turn is, but that is now reversed. If this is true,Tanner crushed Gabriel.
Tanner
hit the lip harder and went more vertical than Gabriel on each wave.
Gabriel got underscored on his great wave due to doing essentially the
same (beautiful) turn 6 times in a row. Tanner blew the roof off of
each turn he did with way more aggression and variety, and risk-taking in the pocket.
However, I think it is very suspect that
throughout this contest lower scores seemed to be dropped as a way to
make up for previously over-scored waves. This would be a good time for the WSL to make a public statement, and good for Julian and Wilko for taking a stand publicly.

As irritating Medina can be he won that heat fair and square. Anyone can sense that the WSL wants JJ to be the champ in 2016 but judges made that a little too obvious this time! Too bad JJ’s promised title will always have a bitter taste…
WSL struggling with ratings and therefore setting up a 10 man World Title showdown at pipe to keep things interesting. If I were them though, I would just have put Mason and Marso on the tour full time. Also bailed Wardo out of jail and got him on aswell.

My opinion: Medina was overscored on his first wave, which then created a no win situation as both guys then caught better waves. Also my opinion, Tanner surfed better overall and controlled the heat. They might not have gotten the wave scores right but the guy who surfed that heat the best won.

With the 8.3, Medina basically did the same backhand hook 6 times. Judges have been punishing lack of variety for most of the season. Like Wilko earlier in this event.

Not saying Medina didn’t surf it great, and aesthetically, there is no problem with repetition. But technically with judging, to get the highest scores with turn based rides, you need to mix it up. Same thing happened with Connor Coffin losing to Melling in JBay.

Tanner’s last turn was the best turn but one solid turn doesn’t beat 3 average turns plus 2 good turns. The other 2 turns each were basically the same. How does 3 turns beat 7 turns when none of the turns are off the planet? Mick must have been freaking (since he is the multi-turn king).

totally disagree about Wilko cuz Simpo 6.83 wave was an excelent one, multiple different turns, air, took risk etc… Simpo won that heat fair and square
