Is it day three? I honestly have no clue!
Yesterday’s smugness lit a fire under the boss’s ass, leading to the subtle suggestion that I write about round three of the Oi Rio Pro today. There is something to be said for digging your own grave, though. Makes you feel like you’ve earned the punishment.
I won’t pretend that I watched any heats live, nor that I spent more than ten minutes on the Heat Analyzer. But here are the big fish that fried today in Saquarema:
Johnny Florence
While I adore our reigning world champ, I also like the idea of a title race — not a goddamn cakewalk. In my mind, Yago defeating John achieves two favorable objectives: the world title becomes achievable to the Owens, Jordies, and Gabriels of the world, and we get to see more from the inevitable talent that is Mr. Dora.
Has anyone looked more in control of their surfboard in these trampolining conditions? I say nay and look forward to a Yago victory in a few days’ time.
Filipe Toledo
Ok, what’s going on here? Filipe lost early in the two events he should have won and made it far in the two events he should have lost. Surf comps are often fluky, but four outliers in one year is pretty hard to reconcile.
On the interference… it was an unnecessary and unfortunate event, but the judges made the right call. The wave had a right, true, but Kanoa commanded the peak and therefore had the right to push Filipe off. You may not like it, but the judges called this one by the book.

But smells like durian.
When living in Bali, I heard a local explaining to an Indo tourist how they sell the ‘bad’ durian to the tourists. And that right there is why knowing even a little of the language of a foreign country is worth it.
I was in Singapore and Jakarta last week and you can smell it just walking the streets…especially in Singapore. I’ve had the dried chips but there is no way in hell I’m trying the fresh stuff.
I’ve had Durian Ice cream by mistake. I’ve never feltched, but that’s got to come close.
You haven’t lived. Find a local, get them to buy it to share. A good one and you will understand!
I’ll definitely think about it. I have to go back to Indo at the end of June so I will have the opportunity.
The other thing is to make sure it is in the middle of the season, not the edges when the fruit isn’t quite ripe, or over ripe. So many factors!

And the purpose of Brazil is a seething mob on the beach threatening to go all Suddenly Last Summer on anyone who knocks out a Brazilian.

What is the purpose? Seems like a crowd is the purpose…better waves are all over the place, but they are distant from population. This event shows how irrelevant the WSL is and always will be. Poja, the live stream needs to show more asses, that’s all this event is worth.
On Filipe…he has a kid now, under the age of two I reckon. Therefore, he’s fucked for at least another year or so but will still requalify. Dad strength takes time, strength for fat lefts and a world title.
