Do you suffer from jealousies? Seeing people get either what you could have had or want very much? I don’t think I do but probably burn as much as the next man unless that next man is Brazilian champion Gabriel Medina and imagine the internal combustion in his heart yesterday on the sands of the Oi Rio Pro.
For there thousands upon thousands of his countrymen were swept into an absolute frenzy by one of their one, Filipe Toledo. Medina had surfed the event earlier in the day, bowing out in the quarterfinals to American as apple pie Kolohe Andino. And there he sat, bowed out, watching the crowd swell, build and roar as Filipe dispatched South African as boerewors Jordy Smith.
And how sad must he have been? Sad or sizzling with envy. He had been the one befriending Brazilian soccer star Neymar Jr. He had been the one broadcast into Brazilian homes nightly, shaving his supple skin. And now those Brazilians who loved him so could barely even shake their hips as a greeting. There was no room for anyone but Filipe Toledo.
It must have stung and stung badly but how will this covetousness alter the rest of the year? Will we witness rabid Brazilian on Brazilian violence or will Gabriel cram those feelings so deeply into his heart that they’ll only manifest themselves in some weird sexual way when he is 65 years old?
Much to discuss.
Also, how do you grade the commentators over the event? The box was all mixed up, Barton with Brad, Pottz with Kaipo, Pete instead of Rosy.

As a good brazilian english speaker, I confess that is fuckin hard to understand that man speaking. I believe WSL should pay attention to this….there are some accents that make it almost impossible to understand being a second language speaker.
Gabriel had to prove to his step-dad he was good enough, and he has, so now where does his motivation come from? Kelly and JohnJohn had absent fathers. It’ll be interesting to see how Kanoa’s career plays out, that face punching suggests future art collaborations with Todd Marinovich.

The Toledos are a very weird bunch, specially the father, who is a loose canon. There are 3 theories being whispered in order of reoccurrence:
1. US Visa is expiring or expired and extended family is having a hard time extending or applying for green card due to Trump’s crackdown. Felipe is OK because he is employed by Hurley and has income but not the rest of the Brady Bunch leeches. That explains why his dad couldn’t travel to Brazil for Oi Rio Pro. If we don’t see him again in J-Bay that might be it.
2. His dad was asked to step aside from coaching. It is no secret that Ricardinho has certain limitations on heat coaching. His bad line up positioning calls have cost Felipe a better performance in several events and potentially last year’s title. Pipe last year on the heat with KS was a joke. Additionally, he is one of the reasons FT doesn’t charge more often on heavier water, being overzealous of his cash cow.
3. Drug related problem with his younger brother. But that I can’t back up.

I find it hard to believe though if Felipe is making enough money to cover the costs of family expenses , ie . housing , health insurance etc that any government , even dumb and full of cum like Trump’s would want them to leave ( taxes is taxes , why kick out a cash cow ) but criminal activity is another story ?

I guess one or two commentators are probably thankful that Mr Bricknell has come in and made them sound…somehow…coherent and insightful. In fairness talking eloquently for any length of time about anything, let alone something as abstract as surfing (especially without really knowing who your audience is) must be bloody difficult. But surely the WSL can find people more cut out for the job? Or maybe not. I assume it was a lack of manpower and/or logistics capabilities that lead to the painful relocation delay during the only period when the waves were epic. (The absence of Kieren Perrow might have accounted for the poor timing but surely not the delay). Maybe said delay was related to budgetary limitations that are also hampering the WSL’s ability to pay for decent commentators?

I always thought Barton was confusing anarchism with libertarianism. In any event I think maybe he went conservative later in life? Or was that Hardman? Or both.
But it’s libertarian-socialism, right, and the tight-rope walk of pairing them, so maybe he knew the difference? The parts about “smaller and smaller bits” combined with a leeriness toward govt AND corporations doesn’t sound too much like Randian/American-style libertarianism. Oh, Texas . . .
Anyhow, who knows. As a teen, it was more fun to name-drop Bakunin and Goldman than read um. The A patch was a fetching look, too. But, then what? You chase some fun, some waves, some travel. If you’re lucky you get a mortgage, a nice wife and kids. You check out BG for the occasional reverie . . .

Barton is spot on. Anarchism in its true sense is actually the ultimate form of libertarianism: the removal of all forms of government and the right to absolute self determination.
