The Hawaiian Islands may not have been the birthplace of surfing, like Peru’s misty shores, but they are certainly its most glorious achievement. Doorae Shin, the Oahu chapter coordinator of the Surfrider Foundation, said that “we need to act as urgently and boldly as possible to make up for decades of inaction.”
“In May 2019, carbon dioxide levels were detected at 415 ppm which is the highest in recorded history,” Shin said. “That’s far from the 350 ppm we need to have a stable planet to live on.”
“The increase of carbon dioxide means that the tides will be higher than ever, so surfing will get increasingly rare and challenging to find,” Shin said.
NASA defines climate change as “a broad range of global phenomena created predominantly by burning fossil fuels, which add heat-trapping gases to Earth’s atmosphere.”
The U.S. has been identified as one of the premiere surf destination countries doing the least to protect its beaches from the changes.
It is a tragedy, one we must all attempt to mitigate but would you allow me to play the Devil’s advocate here? This is BeachGrit, after all, the biggest little surf website in the world where anti-depressiveness is a way of life and the glass is always half full.
What if we lost Pipeline, Pinetrees and Peahi but gained some other super break? If my understanding is correct, climate change is making the weather more severe, storms bigger etc. so bigger swell no? And what if those bigger swells broke just perfectly over Foodland’s newly submerged roof?
Is this not possible?

GDI!!…..Once and for all…Climate Change IS NOT greatly influenced by humans burning fossil fuels. Our planet has always gone through diff changes of climates, temps, etc. People are listening to this brainwashing by this corrupt media!!!….the public in general has become so very dumbed-down in general.

if we all get real here for a moment and disregard some of the trolling comments, the fact of the matter is that sea levels are rising and that many coastal communities are going to find themselves on the brink of disaster within our own lifetimes. How that will affect our surf breaks? Who knows, but one thing’s for sure it’s going to be an awful mess for all our communities. If we really keep our eye on the ball here, climate change is a natural disaster on epic proportions that’s happening before our eyes and we need to do something about it now. We’re talking about people’s lives, homes, towns and communities, surfing should be the least of our concerns around this issue.
Hey GOAT… You’re literally, absolutely, completely wrong. Multiple locations around the Hawaiian islands (not just O’ahu, because for a transplant like you that’s the only island that matters to you) have seen dramatic increases in average sea levels as well as tidal extremes over the past five years. Erosion has also increased at an exponential level in multiple locations in the Hawaiian islands, including your precious North Shore, Waikiki, ‘Ewa Beach, and more. This is leading to worries about how certain towns and areas are going to be able to be habitable in twenty years, as just recently covered in most major newspapers in the Hawaiian Islands. There is no argument that erosion is a natural occurrence, but moreso that the rate thereof is extremely concerning and dangerous combined with documented increases in sea level.
Also, the reefs are not growing. They’re dying at a massive rate, and degrading and breaking down. Just because you get a reef cut at Diamond Head… doesn’t mean that reef is alive and thriving.
How can we be talking about climate change when the real issue is why didn’t Madina check who had priority!
Co2 has basically no net effect on surface temperatures. The greenhouse effect hypothesis is based on old, flawed scientific understanding and does not stand up to any rigorous scientific method.
The climate is changing but it is not driven by Co2 and human activity.
