"Nick Carroll got my hopes up but thankfully Chas Smith is here to make me hang my head in sorrow again."

Counterpoint: Nick Carroll malignantly wrong about John John Florence, the Olympics and surfing’s future!

For shame.

Nick Carroll is a gift to surf journalism, our rank’s preeminent voice, and the rest of us all, from Derek Rielly to Sam George to myself are merely giants standing on the shoulders of a midget. When he finally leaves this gorgeous world life sized statues will be erected in his honor and carried around in elementary school children’s pockets, his face carved into granite cliff sides all jaw and more jaw, but even the mightiest can make altogether misguided and just plain wrong assertions.

For in a recent Surfline piece, Carroll reacted to Stab magazine’s whimpering over the mass layoffs of professional surfers by Hurley and shall we take a little nibble together?

Being a top pro surfer is infinitely the best gig in the sport, possibly in the world. Everyone else works like dogs, while things just fall in your favor. The surf industry booms and pays you a fortune. It runs out of spare cash, and a billionaire shows up! Then before you know it…along comes the Olympic Games.

Fine and good until the “along comes the Olympic Games” bit but excuse me for interrupting.

This is just one thing the stories about JJF have missed. The Olympic Games is about to open new doors for him and a few other first time Olympian surfers, doors that’ve been shut for generations.

The Olympics is a great lever for a big surf star to break open the bigger world of endorsement, the banks and the big athlete brands and such. These companies have seen what happened with snowboarding. They want the next Shaun White, and they will figure that surfing might be the way to get him and/or her.

Indeed it’s already begun.

And ok now. Here we have an essential misreading of history especially as it relates to Shaun White and snowboarding. The “Flying Tomato” won his first gold medal in 2006. A high water mark for still-fresh extreme sports, in general, at a time when cable television, as opposed to anything “on demand” ruled media.

White also dominated a discipline that was easy for the “non-core” viewer to understand. Men spinning wildly high above the earth, short runs, easy to spot mistakes. Everyone could be an “expert” at who performed best and why while sucking down ice-cold Coors Light.

In between his Olympic smashes, White had a yearly X-Games schedule, aired in primetime with much ballyhoo, on ESPN and ABC and an easy-going, magnetic personality that made his interviews and press outings at least appear dynamic. Covers of Rolling Stone and other magazines that used to exist. Celebrity girlfriends and small-time TMZ trouble for inappropriate halloween costumes.

He was America’s favorite red-headed stepchild all “rock n roll” yet mama-approved “safe n cuddly.”

Now, back to John John. Extreme sports are old and not fresh. The Olympics has shed viewers as more and more people “cut the cord.” In the United States, still the only market that matters in terms of seven-figure endorsement deals, much of the programming has been shifted to weird NBC channels like Bravo and Oxygen.

The X-Games is but a hollow reminder of what it once was and doesn’t include surfing.

John John has a public facing persona as vivid as oatmeal sans brown sugar and televised surfing in tiny Japanese waves where the “tricks” etc. are near impossible for the non-surf fan to gauge and/or compare won’t catch any real interest especially when the Coors Light warms up after 40 damned minute heats.

Of course Japan will push Kanoa Igarashi and his story will be cut into a nice YouTube package but that will be the extent of surfing’s Olympic bounce.

If a star comes out of the 2020 Games it will be in skateboarding’s park discipline where men spin wildly high above the earth in short, timed runs with easy to spot mistakes.

Blood on the concrete etc.

The ball is in your court, Nick Carroll.

Agreed and Neptune’s revenge will be an Olympics as flat as a pancake. And surfers will never have to face the injustice of being called athlete’s again

If you want to subject yourself to pretentious self aggrandising crap, read let my people go surfing by the founder of Patagonia.

MK

I’m just surprised to see John settling with Patagonia. The announcement will be released soon.

OffRocker

Nah they will let him be enigmatic, adds some cred to their lineup which has great but No stellar surfers. He can sail around and do envirnmentalism stuff. Also they have very strong non-surf sales which will mean stability going forwards. Good fit in my eyes.

MK

Just can’t wait for the announcement!

Student8888

Yes. I mean everyone who qualified WANTS the opportunity and the media that comes with their berth. Not to mention besides Kanoa, all the other surfers who switched nationalities just to forge an easier path to the Games. … i believe some Cali kid even switched to Israel.

Preston

From the mouth of Fernando himself, the plan is to build a “surf festival” on the beach in effort to “sell” the lifestyle. The actual surfing is a secondary concern.

samwaters

I have no problem believing that at all………

OffRocker

Wsl have been trying that with the drop festival which frankly looked lame

Katherine

couldn’t agree with this article more. John John seems like a wonderful person and he’s a killer surfer but there’s not a lot that’s marketable about him right now, so I don’t see why some people are super into this idea that he’s going to get the next million dollar deal overnight and set the bar for everyone to come. Injured, purposely avoids the limelight, and not going to the olympics. it’s tragic, but it’s not “marketable”

samwaters

He is going to the Olympics.

Katherine

oh well my bad! I guess I’m super behind on that

Chas Smith

But you’re right on the two out of three that matter most!

Katherine

Michael Nova, M.D.

Bingo!

MK

John is with Patagonia

Bush

What about parochialism Chas???u never chanted USA USA? Not enough to fire you up a little ??? I’m pumped and I’ll be cheering for Australia in this. Fuck the seppos and Brazil these are our Gold medals.

Beef & Beer

Even less surfers would want to go to an Asian industrial city than to Lemoore probably, though they could make it cheap enough to get punters through the door and throw in surfboards for free as part of admission…

NEGATRON

I get the feeling that you’re new to talking shit on forums.
Newbies like yourself come in hot and hard without a gasp on how thing are or how they work.

Well, I’m a moderator here which means I can drive the conversations, keep the vibes reasonably friendly and get rid of the odd idiot or spammers.
This is all done in the back end of the website. So I get access to things like emails, IP addresses, comment history on other sites of those that don’t use VPN blockers. From there it’s pretty easy to put the pieces of the puzzle together if you’re internet savvy.

It’s called doxing when you reveal identities of commentators and it’s a bit of a dog move.
So you like poking animals Bunker? bear or a dog?

Beef & Beer

Yes pools are great for incubating jerms
And cheap land for sale soon…

Jordy's pout

Who the fuck is shaun white?

NEGATRON

Speaking of crying Wolf. You realise what my role is here?

NEGATRON

You know it’d would be just easier to just tap him on shoulder?

NEGATRON

You back to bait the bottom feeders of the surf industry and commentating scene again?

NEGATRON

Its after 8 here, I already got that out of the way.

Phil Jarratt has a pretty good resume to be the pre-eminent voice of surfing. Plus he was editor of Playboy (or was it penthouse) which is worthy of getting yourself made in bronze, but I digress.

I did read Nick’s article and yeah, I didn’t really agree on the take that surfers will end up “on top” just because of the Olympics. Ultimately they’ve never been *on top* if you look at sport in the big picture. Compare Kelly with Roger Federer and tell me who came out on top. This is not a function of talent, it is a function of value.

Being an Olympic gold medallist doesn’t automatically bring endorsement riches, this should be self evident but look at all the low-tier events; even the gold medallists have to scrimp to get by. They may get some lame deal from Suisse multivitamins and possibly an OAM down the track but they don’t get to retire with a Mansion on the hill if there’s no money in their sport to begin with.

The ones getting the deals right now are the ones with some sort of connection to Japan. Look at Mahina Maeda. I happen to have a thing for foxy Japanese chicks in bikinis, and what do you know, she’s just signed an endorsement for SKII cosmetics, complete with Olympic rings in the ad, and she isn’t even in the Olympics! (she might qualify via the upcoming world surfing games).

If Alana Blanchard was competing she might be able to get a dream deal on the back of a marketable ass (ala Ana Kournikova or Katarina Witt). And if any of the male surfers happened to look like Chris Hemsworth they might shit it in thanks to a chiselled jawline. But these would be endorsements with mainstream brands looking to cash in on a look.

The other thing is the famous rule 40 where the surfers aren’t going to be allowed to put non-Olympic sponsor stickers on their boards. Nor would any of the surf brands be even allowed to mention the Olympics in the lead up to and during the games. Given that Asics is the official sponsor of the games, and they don’t even make surf gear, where’s the value in sponsoring any surfer at all?

https://www.surfer.com/feat…

I don’t think the Olympics will make a difference to anyone with the exception of the Japanese surfers.

samwaters

All of that may well be. But don’t count out a billionaire yet–I’m pretty sure Dirk and the WSl will find some way to capitalize on the Olympics……..they didn’t promote Elo or bring him on board for no reason…….

Low wide stinkbug stance

Well Sophie was supposed to be the one to bring in the mainstream acceptance, what with her resume. The problem is as it’s always been. Surf contests are boring if you’re not a surfer, and boring enough even if you are a surfer. This was fine in the days of print media and 30 second clips on the TV if you were lucky. The wave pool was supposed to stop all that, but they completely misjudged it as a spectacle (boring) with 8 minutes between waves (too long between riders). It’s not the half pipe in snowboarding and nor is it the artificial river in kayaking.

Huli Opu

Ana Kournikova = hot
Alana Blanchard = not

Yes, Jarratt is a legend and it was Australian Playboy.

Tom

ah Katerina Witt – I remember her playboy shoot!!!!!

Shore pound

Using the snowboarding industry as an example is a horrible comparison. Professional snowboarding, as we know it, is OVER. Why would surfing want to go down the same path?

VAL

Less people snowboarding every year, it’s glorious. The people still involved are here for the right reasons. The core isn’t going anywhere, equiptment is better than it has ever been, just less bagel bites and aunties asking about backflips. Isn’t that what Chas is trying to do with all the shark stories?

Chas Smith

Yes, yes… but they ain’t buying the clothes, the show, the movies or the tour. Surfing has floated entirely free from its “core” for good or bad…
