Insights from Carissa Moore’s Sister on the Finals Day Format
The Journey of Carissa Moore’s Sister
“Caroline surfed great, however I must say this format is not showing a true world champion – someone who shows up consistently at each event.
They should have a wide range of attributes and skills throughout each location, wave, and spot on tour through the year,” wrote Cayla.
“This is extremely discouraging to people like my sister who show up number 1 seed 3x in a row, and are robbed of their hard work and effort all year long because of a ONE DAY event. Fix your format. The WSL Finals is not a good reflection of World Champions. 7 Xs for Riss”
It’s a popular sentiment. Almost seven hundred followers liked it and seventy-three were moved enough to reply, most in the positive column.
Exactly last year your sister had a 2000 pt lead over 2nd place. At seasons end! Only to lose it in this new format. Why should she have to win it twice! Same thing again this year. To me she is the real champ! Last year and this year! Keep your head up Riss!!
so flawed! Imagine if you won every event on tour leading up to this event. And then you lose two heats and you’re not world champion bc of a bad day in horrible surf.
greed! We love our mana wahine @rissmoore10 and this format is flawed in so many ways. Over it @wsl! Even Stephanie said it!
t’s extremely discouraging to surfers where soft lowers doesn’t fit their surfing as much. Been a gift for Toledo this thing isn’t ending at pipeline. That being said Caroline really did surf great today and is such a cool person she will be a great world champion.
this is an absolute disrespect for all the athletes and for the sport itself. This format is an outrageous disrespect for the athletes that work hard all year long for a championship that should give the title to the surfer that was better all the season, and not to the athelete that, despite being in the top 5, is “lucky” enough to wake in a good day, find all the good waves and surf in his/her favorite beach. Your sister is the true champion for two years in a row, and it’s really sad to not see more athletes with enough courage to stand up against this ridiculous fornat. I can’t believe that any real athlete can be in favor of this casino style contest!!!!
I like the all-or-nothing Format, although, yeah, Lowers ain’t the Colosseum the grand final needs.
But if Teahupoo is a little off the shelf, technique wise, where y’think?

What do they do with all the victory paraphernalia when their team/person doesn’t win?
1. Donate to the 3rd world? I’ve been to some pretty backwards 3rd world places where they buy bundles of clothes from the first world and scored some sick clothes but never seen these types of clothes.
2. Burn them so they never see the light of day?
3. They have a printing screen on site and bang them out seconds before the final buzzer?
Yeah, in Hawaii, it’s easy for certain people to freesurf because they have a posse of
thugsproud Ohana to clear the water. Are you saying that Pipe is easier for a non-local to freesurf than one of the 3 point breaks at Trestles, or the similar, for practice purposes, adjacent non-point hike-in breaks?
Yeah, a “playoff” format is mathematically less fair. But the crowd on the beach spoke pretty loudly.
As a pro sport, this is still orders of magnitude better than someone dropping into their first wave in the opening round of the second to last contest, eating shit on a routine cutback, and having Chris Coté tell us with excitement, “And by taking off, Johnny/Joanna Utah has clinched the World Title!” And everyone quits watching until next January.
As sports marketing goes, the old way was a loser, and this brought out the crowds with all the energy and poor sportsmanship that pro sports fans are so good at.
Evan Ewing didn’t get the accolades that he should have, for surfing well under pressure despite an injury that would have had most pros bailing for the season. But that’s not what sells, I guess.
Speaking of selling, should they really have Sunset on the tour? Experienced surfers admire the athleticism and guts the pros showed, just to surf out there in a solid swell, getting swept all over the ocean like castaways with no sail. But the same can be said of watching surfers desperately paddling south as they get sucked to Bolsa Chica on a big South at HB Pier. And it’s just about as entertaining, which is to say, not a lot of us keep watching for long.
Is there some way to do the sports marketing right, that doesn’t look a lot like the current system?
Or is surfing really just not well suited to being a pro spectator sport (an idea with a groundswell in the community every 10 years)?
looks like she’s in the Al merrick stand?
Caroline Marks surfed better in the Finals.
This would have been true in any heat format.
Carissa has a lot of friends, family, and fans. I’ve never met her, but it seems she’s really likable.
But she’s a professional athlete. Professional athletes train and practice for the games they’re going to play. That’s part of the deal. Pro surfers don’t get to just hang out with their friends and surf at home, if they want to win.
One thing that made Kobe Bryant great was that, when he missed a shot in a game, he would be on the court the next morning at sunup, practicing that shot until he didn’t miss.
Is that what Carissa did after last year? Is she at Lowers every day right now, practicing in the conditions most similar to what will be on the slate next year?
Given the variety of waves where Marks took 1st or 2nd this year, from Lemoore to Tahiti, the “didn’t suit her surfing” complaint about the venue is just bullshit. It held water as a complaint about both 1st place winners last year. But it doesn’t apply here.
Marks was also ranked #3 going in. It’s not true that she didn’t show up all year but took the trophy home. It’s not even close.
I have never met her, either.
But this is supposed to be a professional sport, not a popularity contest. And somebody has to come in 1st. Somebody has to come in 2nd. That’s true no matter how the season is set up.
as lieutenant Colombo is leaving out the backdoor he turns (cuts back) and wryly asks: “Can I ask you one more question Ms Scarlett? Will you do me next season?”
https://cf.ltkcdn.net/famil…
and the WSL response? “We are all ears…”
Well, at least they didn’t print up thousands of stupid “Here’s Carissa” shirts.
Simple Fix : ratings win and final fiasco win = Tour Champion and World Champion
voila.
Yeah.
The fact is, the crowds that hoofed it (or e-biked it) to the point speak volumes. This format works for spectators and for marketing the sport. This reality is hard to deny.
Maybe it’s because I’m an OC native, but it also seems to me that the world champion ought to be able to surf Trestles. I mean, it’s known worldwide as a wave that makes everyone look better than we are. Shouldn’t the World Champ be able to really show us how it’s done?
But there ought also to be something for the surfer who just goes from tour spot to tour spot, and does the best overall.
played that over the weekend… nephew loves it! kinda drags on a bit or it coulda been my hangover.
in plenty of sports leagues a team can be undefeated in the regular season and still lose the championship game.
Pretty much every sport.
Fair…
You may be missing the point…
If format existed from the start, we probably wouldn’t have the World Champions we have today.
Replace Kolohe’s name with the spelling bee champ above, no skin off this keyboard!
haha i like it!
Give the man a shot!!
The reality is that she is just not the best surfer at Trestles at the moment but she has the skills to be. Given that Trestles is likely to be the finals until 2025 at the earliest, and that’s assuming the WSL employ someone with half a brain to make better decisions by then, I think she has three options: 1. Grit her teeth and put the time in at Trestles, 2. Accept that she will probably come second at best next year and focus on getting through it to look forward to hopefully better success when the finals is moved somewhere better, or 3. Accept that the current format sucks and quit the tour (unlikely).
If Riss thinks this stings after happening for two consecutive years at Lowers, imagine what it’s going to be like next year when she’s wearing the yellow jersey at the end of the season and they hold finals day in Lemoore…
ha , no lemoore, but Dubai !!
But carrisa can win at Lemoore, not at trestles.
Wha wha sooky pants get your sister to do your whining for you how fucken pathetic.
As pathetic and whinging as writing and angry message about people that you don’t know?
Haha ops sorry did you think this was the womans weekly or some shit.
You read woman’s weekly?
Explains a lot
i read it for the articles
That’s no surprise
Why ? Let’s see you dig yourself out of this one big boy.
Because, you bitch and moan like one .
To create drama have three premium events a year ie Jbay, Cloudbreak, Chopes with more points per a win.. 12000
Keep the rest of the events during the year at 10000 a win.
Finish the year with Pipe – bumping points up to 15k for the win and a bigger prize purse. It would naturally create more drama, and hunger from competitors not in title contention if the pipemaster check was $120k – $150k. The title would finish out pipe more often, and awarding higher points at the best locations rewards the most well rounded surfers. (best surfers).. cough cough
Much better than some manufactured from this crook finals format
They tried this way back in the glory days. Billabong even made a huge 5 star event (previously the highest ranking was 3 stars) but for all the bravado it was won by cheyne horan and Nicky wood and didnt decide the title.
Like the fantasy surfing they should increase the points of each event by a percentage margin
If you look at the Jr, QS and exhibition events wins that Kolohe has one, I pretty sure he holds a record for wins at Lowers.
Technically he may be one of the most winningest surfers at the Finals spot.
I won a spelling bee in third grade does that count for anything? No one cares what kolohe did as a grom.
Congrats!
Just talking about finals being held this specific location. Give the poor, sometimes homeless looking kid a shot and who knows…
Even a broken clock is right twice a day!
Seriously though… dying to know your winning word.
Is ‘Colonel Mustard’ Jessy Fatty Cyrus’s new nickname ?
Kinda suits her really…
The Moore family delegated it would seem how to get the sour grapes out there in the media without the collateral damage for Carissa who posted her usual sugar and spice and all things nice snaps on the gram. Whilst little sis does the moaning on her behalf. Five world titles is what she has and she had better get use to it. Unlikely to be anymore coming her way. She had a good run but the young guns have arrived and they have no fear and will show no favour to yesterday’s heroes.
Or maybe here sister did it on her own.
Carissa completely dominated those “young guns” all year and came out with more points than anyone else.
Still by far the best of the women
And lost when it really mattered. Again. Say goodnight Carrie. The brave new world of championship winning pro surfing isn’t for you on the evidence. You were once a force. You will be left behind with the infusion of new radical blood. Swishing and swirling on the wave won’t cut it anymore with the judges going forward.
Carolines problem is her ugly poo stance but theres some other rookies who look pretty good.
Finals day is inherently unfair on the competitors, and sport is supposed to be about fairness, unlike Sports Entertainment, which is what ELO brought us! I’m still convinced that that Shark alarm on the first finals day was faked!
Under the old format it was possible to win a World Title without ever winning an event. Parko almost did the year he got his title.
Finals Day isn’t really winning an event.
If you are No1 seed you only need to win 2 heats.
Like last year, Pip did it in a canter.
That’s the point though, the person in first has an advantage going into the event.
