Stay at North Shore resort where surf icon was found dead in the tub of his condo, murdered at the behest of a North Shore gangster.
Fears the headquarters of the World Surf League had been burned to the ground during fires still engulfing the prettier parts of Los Angeles were, mercifully, unfounded when fans were reminded the League had got out of Santa Monica a year back and into a bleak veterinarian office in El Segundo, fifteen miles south.
Further fears the world tour may have vanished given the lack of noise coming from Studio WSL, billionaire Dirk Ziff simply shuttering the whole show in disgust, were also unfounded when the League unveiled its VIP package for the upcoming Lexus Pipe Pro, Jan 27 through Feb 8.
Each follows the below routine:
“Each night, we’ll get a head’s up from the WSL if heats will be running the next day. On heat days, Jamie and our crew of guides will lead the group over to the event to watch the heats from the VIP booth and take in the scene. On off days, we’ll break into smaller groups based on surf skill and interest to find the right breaks for surfers of every level. While the North Shore has heavy waves like Pipeline, there are also lots of spots better suited for beginners and intermediates. And beyond the surf, the North Shore has amazing hikes and nature for some diversity. In this evening, you’ll be free to enjoy the Turtle Bay resort!”
There is no other hotel on the surf circuit as storied as the Turtle Bay Hotel, a tired ol gal built in 1972 and launched as the grandiosely named Del Webb’s Kuilima Resort Hotel & Country Club a little way out of the seven-mile miracle on the Kam Highway.
It was here the 11th Earl of Coventry and high-profile British pro surfer, Ted Deerhurst, was found dead in the tub of his condo, murdered at the behest of a shadowy North Shore gangster.
Ten gees, or close enough to it for the VIP package, is a little steep even for someone like your old pal DR who ain’t afraid to shed a few leaves for a good time. Best time I ever had on the North Shore featured a bunk bed at the Billabong house, a few Oxys and an eight-ball courtesy of a very storied surfer and a farewell visit to Honolulu’s famously well-washed hookers.
