Australian surfers disparaged by country’s Home Affairs Minister in wake of canceled Ye West visa

"We have enough problems in this country already without deliberately importing bigotry."

The controversial rapper formerly known as Kanye West has officially had his Australian visa revoked by the Commonwealth after releasing songs praising Adolf Hitler many months ago and declaring on X that he was a Nazi and loved Hitler. Ye has since recanted, once again taking to X to share, “I am done with antisemitism. I love all people. God forgive me for the pain I’ve caused. I forgive those who have caused me pain. Thank you God.” But the Australian government clearly did not find the walk-back suitable and canceled his ability to enjoy the country even though it is home to his wife, Bianca Censori.

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke explained, “It was a lower level (visa) and the officials still looked at the law and said you’re going to have a song and promote that sort of Nazism, we don’t need that in Australia,” before unloading a double-barreled blast at Australian surfers.

“We have enough problems in this country already without deliberately importing bigotry.”

Australian surfers immediately knowing the “problem” is them.

The government spends many millions of dollars a year subsidizing surf training camps, funding surf competitions via tourism board dollars etc. with millions more being spent by the private sector on various boardriders feeding systems et. al. and yet only one male Australian surfer is currently in the World Surf League’s “Final Five,” Ethan Ewing, and just barely. Jack Robinson, at seven, the only other Australian with any hope at all.

A damning truth.

Also implied in Burke’s statement that Australian surfers are bigoted enough all by themselves.

No telling if the kick in the daks will spur revitalization.

No Ye West concerts, in any case, either way.

Are you excited for J-Bay?

More as the story develops.

Gila, I’m shocked that you give a shit what the 4 magat losers on this website have to say about Australia or anything at all. Likely their opinion is a stupid one, just like most of their other opinions.

Instalo Feedeira

You can love Hitler but it doesnt mean he’ll love you back.

Barnycle

So many great songs written about just this exact thing. A crying shame

Happy Camper

sound’s like Australia has changed so much since the times I was living there. absolutely loved living in Oz.

Happy Camper

I tried to respond.
I said: “I don’t understand what I’m trying to say either, but I’ll get back to you”…
and then I shared a video of the anti-semetic rallies held in Australia in which thousands of Australians joined in a lovely chant that rhymed with duck the shoes, and burned shoeish flags while waving Gazan Flags. there was one arrest as well, that of a man who was carrying a shoeish flag.

then I got an immediate notice that Disqus banned my comment because they determined it to be spam, even though the video was from the Australia channel 7 news.

Happy Camper

yeah, same here….I don’t even understand what I’m trying to say, but I’ll get back to you on that. meanwhile, please enjoy this lovely video of Australians expressing there free speech and ideologies.

Com Turren

From afar we mostly think that you’re just drunk all the time, tbh. But I am, admittedly, a bit jealous if that is accurate. I would love to be drunk all the time.

Happy Camper

okay, so a guy who is anti Israel and supportive of fascist ideologies and a fascist is banned from Australia because of his thoughts and speech. sounds a bit fascistic.
………and this amid the backdrop of massive anti-israel/anti-Semitic rallies throughout the country of non-bigoted purity.

Brutus

ah, Ethan and Jack didn’t come thru the Surfing Australia network…….so go to the next surfers and that’s what $7m buys you a year from Surfing Australia…….why did Kingy quit as head coach??

Jack John Johnson

Surfing and rap are so intertwined currently it’s no wonder.

neckofthewoods

Makua!

Jack John Johnson

Jett Shilling!

Barnycle

….and Curren signs on as a ambassador for the tub. The wave looks fun

Skippy

It’s the only method I’m interested in trying, the rusty steam-punk plunger thingy.

Sean Connery

That place must be bleeding money.

Barrelled

Doubt it. Pretty sure those guys are using mining methods to run the hydraulic and pneumatic systems that lift the plunger and then gravity does the rest.

Sean Connery

Is it open to the public?

Barrelled

Don’t think so. Still proof of concept at Yeppoon, don’t think it’s been converted to public use yet.

Sean Connery

So no money coming in other than those syphoned from new eager investors ready to prop up the plunge at the chance to share a peak with the Occ and now Curren? Sadly most won’t be able to make the drop at said peak.

Rocks local

not so coincidentally, Stab just ran a story addressing all these questions. Summary is that founders of this thing had no real money behind them so just trying to show proof of concept to lure investment, etc, etc, etc, everything on track now, they’re really ready to make it a real thing, yadda, yadda.

Sample quote from Stab piece: “So, if anyone does want to get behind it, there’s an opportunity for the public to invest. It’s the first time we’ve done a retail round that anyone can invest in. You can get in for a thousand U.S. bucks. It’s important to note that it’s a U.S. raise, so it rules out Australians for now. But we’ll do an Aussie round for Yeppoon soon. “

Sean Connery

Hmmm… Do I put $1000.00 in a high yielding savings account (4%) where everyday I lose money to inflation or throw it all into yepoon? Decisions…decisions.

Rocks local

lol, precisely

NEGATRON

How many surfs does your bank give you for that $1K?

Sean Connery

No gaurantee my $1k to Yepoon will lead to any surfs either. Got to get out of the ground first.

longtomssecondcuztwiceremoved

They’ve been rattling the can now since 2017- this is the third or fourth round of funding requests.
Had approval since 21 or 22 too turn Yeppoon into a public wavepool (and massive tourism development).

There’s a 5 member board, a 10 member team and 8 ambassadors.

Thats a lot of mouths to feed before they even start having money to pay for D-9’s to show up and get cracking on doing what needs to be done to get a surfable wave for all the savvy investors lining up to throw down.

Barrelled

The CGI plunger at about 3:05 is classic.

Barnycle

The barrel, in that video, looks sick as fuck.

Mapski

So late middle aged stoner modified skimboard riders are the tubs demographic?

Mapski

And happy birthday Thomas Roland Curren (7/3/1964).

Derek Hynd's Missing Fins

Goofy vs Regular, Oz vs USA, Bong vs Op/Rip Curl, extroverted with tons of kids vs on the spectrum introverted with multiple kids.

(Nice scoop Barncycle. I’m sure DR or Chas would have gotten to it in September or thereabouts.)

Com Turren

did they stay to have the steak and eggs at Antoine’s though? Solid breakfast option in SC.
