Surf media watchers are scratching their heads, this morning, trying to sort out the new landscape after scandal prone outdoor lifestyle website The Inertia’s founder, Zach Weisberg, stepped away from the company, announcing the move in a murky social media post. “When I started @theinertia in 2010, I was 25. A lifetime ago. I was a different person,” the treatise began, before devolving into what many described as “dangerous” and “conspiratorial” accusations.

I had a foolish idea, but I knew that with energy, persistence, and luck, it could work. The goal was to create a platform that celebrates the rich diversity of surf and outdoor culture. We wanted to tell great stories and welcome everyone who loves the ocean and outdoors to the party. I wanted to follow my gut, collaborate with inspiring people, and, most of all, learn.
After publishing more than 30,000 articles, producing hundreds of short films, launching an education platform, and hosting unforgettable gatherings that created a lifetime of beautiful memories, I’d say, for me, mission accomplished.
Against all odds, our amazing team believed in the vision and put their heart and soul into bringing it to life. From zero readers to millions, The Inertia is well-positioned to continue to thrive for years to come.
More importantly, this journey created friendships and memories that we’ll keep forever.
I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your contribution to my 15-year voyage on this ship.
I’m excited to cheer the team on as I begin a new chapter.

Not super surprising that he’d eventually leave, I feel! He sold to GearJunkie a few years back now, and I’d assume he’s vested and all that by now. I’d be curious to know what happens to the Inertia long term — it felt like a weird buy for GJ, but who the hell knows with the way we do media now.

Even when Weisberg was there he posted very view pieces himsel—while mostly letting his (like-minded sold-out), underlings do his dirty work for him—a lot of propaganda type stuff, selling anything under the sun, advertiser sponsored (kick-back $), articles, etc.
There’s probably still enough Val’s, kooks, wannabes, etc., clicking on to keep it alive for awhile with the current well-trained, sold-out, surf-sell-out staff, clicking out there trademarked two-faced ‘spiel’, (a utterance that someone has often said before and that is usually intended to persuade people to buy something, or agree to something).
