A proud day for… someone, in Hawaii, today, after the state officially accepted surfing as a championship sport. Months ago, culture watchers around the globe wondered if jocks and surfers would, in fact, break generations of enmity to join forces, wear letterman’s jackets and otherwise sis boom bah.
Worry percolated that some surfers might revert to more natural places of being “over it” but all was well in the end, surfing sanctioned by the Hawaii High School Athletic Association, its first championship to be held in spring ’26.
HHSAA Executive Director Chris Chun, thrilled, declared, “This is a monumental day for Hawaii’s student-athletes and the sport of surfing. Surfing is deeply rooted in our culture and way of life, and we extend our sincere gratitude to our legendary surfers who have paved the way for this sport in Hawaii and around the world. We are thrilled to offer this incredible opportunity to high school students statewide, allowing them to compete for a state title in a sport they are passionate about. We look forward to crowning our first state champions in 2026.”
The question, I suppose, which trophy will carry greater weight in the future: Filipe Toledo’s World Surf League’s cups won at Lower Trestles or the Hawaii State Surf Championship horn won at TBD but somewhere on the islands?
A case could be made for either, I suppose, but I’d imagine Hawaii State Surf Champ explaining the victory as a 50 year old would seem much cooler than Toledo explaining how the WSL had this weird little format glitch from ’21 to ’24 which suited cowardice.

When I was in high school, surfers in Hawaii were old Hawaiian men in Waikiki, making money from tourists or dope-smoking haole hippies on the North Shore.
Regular kids played American football in high school or if you wanted to be “local”, you joined a canoe-paddling club.

Don King was a grade ahead of me at Punahou and Little Tommy Boyle was in my class.
One day in study hall at Cooke Library (yes, named after Alec “Ace Cool” Cooke’s ancestors), Don waved us over. We checked to see where the monitor was and went to Don’s carel.
He showed us some black and white prints he had made in photo class, that he shot at North Beach at KMCAS with his new Nikonos water camera. It was Jim Shipman and a couple of other friends on a perfect Kona wind day at Pyramid Rock.
One shot was used on the cover of a SURFING Magazine poster annual later that year –
although JSC has blocked me, he and I went to school together until he was in 11th grade…and it wasn’t Punahou, so unless he transferred to Punahou in his senior year…I’m a bit skeptical of his history.
I’m waaay more than a bit skeptical about anything he says, especially to do with his ‘discoveries’ like when he exposed Cloud 9 in the 1990’s.
Heck I’ve got mates who’d already done that whole coast and bought land nearby before Boyum got there in the 1980’s.
And then there’s the tale about surfing Sentinel watched by the cannibals, hmmmm…

I did tell a certain surfing company how to take a boatload of surfers to the Andamans, but I specifically told them NOT to go to North Sentinel as it was off-limits and the locals were hostile to visitors.
We have been to many other locations in the Andaman AND the Nicobar Islands, there are several big India chapterS in THE BOOK, scheduled for release in September 2025!

The Andaman and Nicobars have never been hidden or hard to reach with self sufficient surfers sailing there since the 1980’s that I’m aware of, and earlier for the ones involved with smuggling…
Pretty clear you know absolutely nothing about either the Andamans nor the Nicobar islands, as they are anything but easy to access – particularly the Nicobar islands, which for all intents and purposes, are impossible to access for anyone without an Indian passport
