“The most wretched people in the world are those who tell you they like every kind of music 'except country.”
I wouldn’t say it’s been completely unnoticed, IFYKYK etc, but a little-ish known fact surrounding Noa Deane, Volcom surfer, scion of the late, great Wayne Deane, is he was a founder of the Byron band Skegss latterly famous with their cover of Sheryl Crow’s It It Makes You Happy.
Noa, who is thirty one can you believe where do the years go and so on, has long given outlet to his musical needs, first turned onto the wild sounds six bits of wire fed by electricity can make when he was twelve and got himself a left-handed red Fender Squire Strat.
After he helped kick Skegss into live in 2014, he quit one year later to focus on one of the most lucrative free surf contracts in the biz, six-fifty k a year just to be beautiful in the water.
The year after, Noa started recording and performing live under the moniker Blister, releasing an EP in 2016 followed by three albums, all on Bandcamp and Spotify. Says he’s real into The Melvins, Mudhoney.
The latest single, Window of Islands, is a whimsical piece of alt-country, think J Mascis if he didn’t groan so theatrically, written and sung by Noa Deane and wrapped in a hail of slide guitar.
The county pivot is real smart, ain’t nothing hotter than C dubs right now, Beyonce, Post, even your ol pal DR just received a shipment of Ely Cartman snap-button shirts to pair with old APC denim and brown suede boots.
Noa’s pal Candy Creedence Revival McTaggart also performs, he under the banner WASH. The song Numbed so good you’d swear you’d been teleported back to nineteen seventy nine and you were listening to a Joy Divs demo.

Who’s the main singer of Skegs? I watched some vid of a gig a year ago for what reason, I dont know. But was shocked as he was a fatty. I thought they were all good surfers and that was the way they gained a following.

Been there, done that…..too many times.
when Dwight Yoakam arrived on the scene, he was considered “alt-country” before the word “alt”.
“the best voice in country music history,”…said Johnny Cash…..and he was great in Sling Blade

Alt-Country is nothing more than hipsters who discovered Waylon Jennings and Hank Williams, and then decided that their skinny jeans wearing cheap imitation thereof was somehow superior to REAL modern-day country like Lil Nas X.
Nailed It! Few of those hipsters have ever been in a real fight, roped a cow, banded a calf, bucked a bale or drank whiskey the way Waylon or Toby drank it* while still being able to stand on stage and perform.
*Toby was a tequila drinker.
*raped a cow
I think alt-country is revisionist creativity at its very best, gifting new life into a very old and very tired genre.
Makes clips easy to make with a super 8, old valiant, northern rivers sugarcane fields and mt warning visuals
Hank III is legit.
