Ships ahoy! A passenger vessel ran onto reef this morning.
At 8 a.m. HST, the Discovery, a boat that transports ticket holders to an offshore pleasure submarine, charged through the break at the edge of Kewalo Basin, nailed a hard right down the line, and ran itself aground.

You may know that Kewalo Basin sits down from the famed Ala Moana Beach Park which hosts all the big Oahu studs, including those who drive down from North Shore to catch the right swell, usually popping in the summertime. Kewalo breaks left, it breaks right, and it now breaks boats.
Intriguing, as two days ago, six passengers were just rescued at Ala Moana when their boat caught fire.
Cheeky comments from big shots are flooding in:
Clark Little: “Brah!!! That’s the craziest boat floater I’ve ever seen.”

Many questions remain as investigators are just beginning to core the apple of this thing.
Both captain and mate are sure to take mandatory drug and alcohol tests (a good idea) as soon as they are on ground again.
Was the captain authorized to take the boat out without passengers and burn gallons of gas?
I suppose the whole little spin around the waves smacked the (former?) captain like stepping on a rake. Fortunate that the boat ran on reef and not on the heads of surfers, bodyboarders, and bodysurfers trying to enjoy the pumping conditions on a sunny Honolulu Saturday.
Bowls is quite the sight today with eyeballs split between the crowded six-to-eight blue walls and the stranded vessel. It’s a real scene, man.
What are your theories about this thing?
Looks like he had it pretty straight. Either he lost control of the helm steering via auto pilot or the stern lifted and cavitation caused the stern to brake free. Either way he was stressing..
Maybe some ice and an all nighter could have sparked such a poor decision?🤷♂️

I once sat next to a Coast Guard commodore, or some such position, on a flight to Hawaii. Navigating boats in the surf came up, as that’s a big part of what they do. He mentioned that the recruits that had some wave riding experience were some of the best natural helmsmen. I’m guessing this captain was no such person. Boats don’t generally take to wave riding.

as one can see on the video, the vessel was heading straight towards Panics, however “By law, Point Panic is bodysurfing-only—no boats, kayaks, surfboards or bodyboards allowed.”

the channel would close out about every 15-20 mins. all other vessels made it in no problem. but none attempted to enter the channel during a channel-closing set like this guy

I remember 1984 when a very similar tour boat tried to get into the harbor on a big south and was swamped, its engines stalled and it drifted into Panics where braddah Paul Stone was mangled and killed.
I thought it looked more like Point Panic the body surf spot than magic Island.
