Chief of War Jason Momoa declares birthplace of big wave surfing his favorite beach in the world

Makaha shines again.

Sometimes, I find myself confused about where notable celebrities choose to live. The famous comedian Dave Chappelle, for example, calling Yellow Springs, Ohio home. Or John Travolta picking Ocala in the weird middle part of Florida. I am not at all confused by Jason Momoa’s preferred domain, though, the proud Hawaiian islands.

The 46-year-old is currently starring in Apple TV’s Chief of War, a historical drama based on the true events surrounding the unification of the aforementioned archipelago in the latter part of the 1700s. Momoa was born in Honolulu and though spent his childhood in Iowa, returned to “The Gathering Place” to attend the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa.

Well, the well-built and very handsome man could, of course, afford to live anywhere. He could live in Byron Bay, Australia he could live in Baia do Sancho, Brazil and he could live in Huntington Beach, California but, as mentioned, he prefers the islands, calling Oahu home even though spending more time on Kauai. Momoa told Travel + Leisure, “There’s certain foods, there’s the way the water feels for me, the way that the sand feels for me, the way the air smells, how my skin feels here—it’s just a deep connection. It’s where I’m from. It’s where I was born. It’s my culture. It’s a wonderful thing to come home. This is where I’m rooted.”

Very fine, though which beach do you think is his favorite? Oahu, of course, has many nice ones including Waikiki, Pupukea or Kailua. Poipu or Hanalei on Kauai. Though none challenge the mighty Makaha for Momoa.

“My family beach is Makaha,” he continued. “Pretty much everything on the west side is home, but Makaha is probably my favorite beach in the world.”

Surfers, of course, know Makaha as one of the early big wave spots. Wally Froiseth and John Kelly, two pals from Town, are credited with pioneering the spot back in 1937, riding the biggest wave ever recorded, up until that point.

Iconic.

But over to you. What is your favorite beach in the world?

Uppers? Lowers? Middles?

Discuss.

Met momoa a couple of times and spent a day at a house of his years ago through a shared interest in a sport. Very strange dude, a mix of complete familiarity with people which felt very real, but also a kind of need to actively be the centre of attention in any environment which was beyond odd. Like he would drive around in a convertible vintage rolls royce, dressed in outlandish victorian clothing and a top hat. Then get out of the car with a speaker blaring rock, and him wearing garish striped trousers, just to walk into a shop and buy a pack of gum or something. It was the opposite of trying to blend in. Kind of cool, kind of weird. Said he would invite me and some friends over for beers another time, never did and i never called back.

The entire beach from Rockpile to Rocky Rights is pretty incredible. Especially with the shifting sands of mid winter.

Fuck there was a gorgeous beach at Asu.
I spent countless days soaking rays on it and dreaming about nothing at all between the ages of 20-22. Did the lift fuck it?

Fixed it for you –

sad but true….know anything about the ice/CM scene in Hawaii…..??

JSC

If you have spent any amount of time in Hawaii in the past 30 odd years, say more than one week, then you know crystal methamphetamine use is widespread and a serious problem – one of the reasons we left Hawaii was to get away, far away, from drug users, drug dealers and an insular island culture that has long since accepted both as part of the social fabric and done little to nothing about drug use and all the associated social problems.

Panda's sack rash

The reason you left was because you are so entitled.

you have posted this prob 20 times in past week

JSC

Nope – twice, actually – thanks for being a fan!

You have to be from Hawaii to understand the significance of the Private/Public school divide – otherwise, it makes no sense at all.

Brutus

so you left because of drug users…..now there’s a story….

JSC

Only one of the reasons – Hawaii is also a very expensive place to live and you spend untold extra hours and dollars sitting on airplanes just to go to or from Hawaii. Some people don’t care, Hawaii is all they know and they are happy to put up with the problems, expense and inconvenience.

For other people; like moi, there are better places to live.

They are all on ice?

Travolta lives in Spruce Creek, it’s a affluent community that has an airport, you can taxi from your garage.

if JMo is so into his Hawaiian home, why’d he produce over 70% of COW in New Zealand?
Oh, yeah……money
cheaper to use New Zealand crew and sets than supporting the local Hawaii film community.

I came here looking for a detailed recap of one of the best women’s competitions of all time.
But all we get is a Hollywood plug for a half-Iowan haole boy, Samoan Hawaiian wannabe, top shelf virtue signaler and Hawaiian cultural commodifier who can’t act for shit?

At least you mentioned the legendary and humble hero John Kelly.

I don’t think anyone, in the history of the world, has been as bad at their job as Jason Mamoa is at acting.

wait, you routinely pegged BM when you were a lead pipe fella? Was said pegging actually with a lead pipe?

Where’s Ben been hiding—I actually somewhat enjoyed some of his posts, kept it interesting.
Did you ban him?

He’s not banned.

Gwen Walz’s Eyes

Ben isn’t banned? Really?

@surfads

He’s been captured by whale hunters and is hiding in Alaska, waiting to return and claim his rightful Kingdom of _______

Low wide stinkbug stance

Anyone seen Ben and JSC in the same room together?

Gwen Walz’s Eyes

Ben was a top shelf commenter on BG. And a pretty smart dude. Aldo did a very good job as editor at surfer ( ing?).

I assume he went too far off the deep end here ( and possibly in private messages to management ) and will never be allowed back. I get it.

But he was a hoot to read

Low wide stinkbug stance

He was inadvertently hilarious with his rantings but reading between the lines may have been dealing with mental issues in real life.

His problem was (like the other guy) he didn’t have the wherewithal to realise was just some guy and not an integral cog in the surfing lifestyle.
