I need my Moonlight Beach!
The sleepy little beach town of Encinitas, California is usually just that. Quiet. Quaint. Neighbors greeting each other with light head nods while shopping for crack at Seaside Market. Bucolic. Neighbors greeting each other with light head nods while ordering gelato from one of thirty gelaterias. Peaceful save the odd brush with 12-year-old e-bike gangs popping wheelies on the walking path and hooting a little too loud.
The Encinitas idyll was shattered, however, on July 5th 2025 not by a hobo passing through on his way to North Park nor an over-zealous patriot but rather by a man voted into office to keep the place quiet, quaint, bucolic and peaceful.
One wild Encinitas day
But let us travel back in time to that fateful date and carefully examine what happened. So, Luke Shaffer, 45, and representing Encinitas District 1 on the council, was hoping to enjoy a day at Moonlight Beach, which is very popular amongst peacocking pre-teen set. Parking can be difficult to find though Shaffer thought he scored. The only problem, some trash cans were in the way. He moved them but the home’s resident did not like this, marched out and moved them right back.
This set Shaffer right off and he allegedly pushed the can over and tossed trash into the interloper’s face. He then, according to prosecutors, hopped into his truck and bashed the cans good. The resident also declared Shaffer’s intent to run him over and also declared that he would never get another permit in the city again.
Shaffer, for his part, said the man moved the cans into his truck’s way while he was simply trying to back up.
Well, the whole business headed into court. A felony assault charge brought. Shaffer’s defense attorneys asking for the charges to be dismissed. The judge, however, kicking felony assault down to a misdemeanor.
Thankfully, an Encinitas neighbor’s doorbell camera captured all the action so we can, each of us, adjudicate right now.

Yeah. At first reading the title of video I thought another douche councilmen. Then after skipping reading article and going right to video its clear that blow in neighbor uses his trash cans to keep people parking in front of his beach adjacent house. Screw that guy. Team Shaffer here.

Moonlight Beach (my son’s favorite place to boogie board). Yes, parking can be a nightmare here. I have noticed on multiple occasions one home specific on C street will put their trash cans out in front of their home very spread out taking up multiple parking spots (after the trash man has come).
My verdict is that the Mexican workers in the foreground think coastal San Diego white dudes are pinche pendejos.

Blue cans are typically recycling in California and that piece of whatever it is seems to have come from the blue can. Either way, fighting over parking to access a complete shit surf spot is pretty funny.
