Shock and dismay bubbling through North County, San Diego, this morning after local surf legend Rob Machado was targeted by an Encinitas councilmember in a vicious screed. Though officially from Cardiff-by-the-Sea, the handsome screwfoot put the region on the map as he rose to fame through the 90s. Machado competed on the Association of Surfing Professionals Championship Tour, winning twelve events and once placing number two in the world. He appeared in the culturally important Momentum films and also played in a band with Kelly Slater and Peter King. His age-defying handsomeness has only increased his relative value and now, at 51, he is arguably the second most beloved surfer on the planet behind Mick Fanning.
Well, none of the above stopped Encinitas councilmember Luke Shaffer from lighting right in. The business unfolded during a public city council meeting addressing the issue of un-housed people camping vehicle sleeping on streets. Some thought the rules against should be strengthened while others argued criminalizing poverty was unchill. Shaffer, who identifies as a surfer, turned it very personal, declaring that he didn’t want his son or daughter walking past “slightly rundown 19–something era vehicles containing the wrong people who don’t make you feel so cozy.”
Ouch.
Everyone knows that Rob Machado drives, and sometimes loiters, in a slightly rundown 19–something era van.
Describing him as “the wrong people who don’t make you feel so cozy,” however, a stunning dig that took some on the council aback.
Shaffer explained that he wasn’t trying to stereotype Rob but added that he was once a U.S. Marine and served overseas where it was important to profile people “pretty hard” for “obvious reasons.”
Double ouch.

Good lord. Machado is a rich white dude who can stop by his ocean side home to take a dump when the need arises.
On the other hand, homeless and van lifers park illegally, dump their sewage on our sidewalks, in our creeks and oceans. It’s disgusting and polluting the community.
Van lifers park in the sweetest spots illegally and for days at a time. They don’t all surf, but they do all squat and contribute their fare share of trash, ruinę and 💩.
Encinitas, where the average home costs $2 million, needs a clean up set to wipe the line up clean, cause this 💩 stinks!

There’s a good line in the book The Long Goodbye by Raymond Chandler. Private dick Philip Marlowe is driving a client from LA to TJ and he remarks about how unremarkable the drive is through San Diego County. Basically go up a little hill and down another, up a little hill and down another. The more things change the more they stay the same, except I think Machado has joined the Cside Sprinter Brigade.

Instead of examining the social and economic systems which oppress and disenfranchise, they want the population to hate those who are different and or less fortunate as a distraction from their abuse of power.
By destroying education systems, they seek to exacerbate the issues as a method of control. Sowing division and hindering ability to question and enact change towards a fairer, compassionate and more equitable society.
On a lighter note… I’m pretty sure the rocks on the inside at my local have been deliberately placed there by Big Fin. I lost another one while coming in. Couldn’t find it at low tide, amongst the seagrass and crevices.
