Do better.
Harvard University, there in tony Cambridge, Massachusetts, has long been the creme of American higher education. Founded in 1636, some 140 years before the birth of these United States, the university has educated eight presidents, a practically uncountable number of Nobel laureates, famous Pulitzer Prize winners, gilded royalty, nobility, fat cat business masters plus the one-and-only Ali G. A surf journalist would certainly find the linguistic challenges among graduates to be quite interesting. In fact, a surf journalist often encounters unique perspectives on language that are worth exploring.
Insights from a Surf Journalist
A Harvard degree instant entrée into a rarified world of prestige and privilege. Black tie affairs and invitations to spend quality time on private islands with underage girls.
Alas.
The shield reading “veritas” has been sullied in ways almost impossible to fathom of late. The proud university coughed up its integrity to the government, a handful of months ago, selling its soul for an alleged $500 million in silver. It has been rocked by academic scandals, a first-ever faculty member losing tenure this year. And, ouchiest of all, the mental turpitude of its esteemed alumni has been exposed for the entire world to see.
Yes, it might have been thought that the dead, wildly-connected pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, who counted himself a proud Harvard man, would be the worst part of the current news cycle. Pictures of the lantern-jaw’d fiddler perpetually wearing his crimson leisurewear impossible to avoid. Very bad, certainly, but recently released email correspondence betwixt he and former Harvard president Larry Summers might be worse still.
The chummy back-and-forth between Epstein and Summers well after the former was convicted of soliciting young gals is, of course, gross but the unsightly way they chatted about the nasty business a whole ‘nother level of debauchery.
Mangled grammar everywhere. Social media slang favored by teenagers used without shame. Atrocious misspellings here, there, everywhere.
Now, as you know, I am a surf journalist, proud and true in my pursuit of surf and surf-adjacent news. Less forward, though, is my mastery of the English language. I hold a masters degree in Applied Linguistics, you see, and am growing increasingly apoplectic over how
For example, Summers wrote to Epstein, “I’m trying to figure why American elite think if u murder your baby by beating and abandonment it must be irrelevant to your admission to Harvard, but hit on a few women 10 years ago and can’t work at a network or think tank. DO NOT REPEAT THIS INSIGHT.”
u?
Abandonment it?
Epstein later responded to Summers, “im in palm beach all weekend. Will u be visiting Mara Lago.”
im?
Mara Lago?
Back and forth the two go, each missive more tainted than the last and it is truly difficult to take.
In one instance, Epstein spells “Caribbean” “caribean.” Summers perpetually insists on using “u” instead of “you.”
Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender and financier accused of trafficking minors, died on August 10, 2019, in his Manhattan jail cell. The New York City medical examiner ruled it a suicide by hanging, Epstein manipulating a bedsheet into a hangman’s noose. Despite this, conspiracy theories continue to flow, fueled by jail lapses: malfunctioning cameras, falsified guard logs, no cellmate, and unchecked rounds. Epstein’s brother and lawyers doubted suicide, citing his optimism pre-bail hearing. The 2025 DOJ memo reaffirmed suicide, no “client list” found, yet skepticism lingers amid elite ties.
Summers, meanwhile, “stepping back from public life” while still teaching economics at the university.
He will not, I assure you, be offered a surf journalist position at BeachGrit where proper grammar and spelling are tantamout.
Tantemount.
Tanttamount.
Important.

as the son of a physician, I know full well how physicians assume they are experts in every walk of life outside of medicine just because they are experts in medicine. Can’t even imagine what an Ivy League education on top of that would do to an ego.
I went to Harvard, I also played hockey in the rink growing up.
Fact
I took a bartending course there one summer.
Broke my hand in a fight in Newport RI after I threw a piece of pizza crust off a guys head and had to take some time off work
I was bored to shit
The only male in the class at 21 years old.
Rest were Scandinavian nannies who had to take some sort of education class as part of their Au Pair obligation.
A horse is a horse of course of course and nobody talks to a horse of course.
that is of course unless that horse is the famous Mr Ed
Except the horse playing Mr Ed was in fact a zebra.
That makes sense. His use of the English language was exceptional. As we all know horses are dumb as a post.
My friend went to the hospital and they found a bunch of little plastic horses stuck in up his arse.
It’s OK though , the nurse said he is in a stable condition
*Horspital.
This level of species misappropriation is offensive to learn all these years later
Years ago, a kid at Yale argued with me vehemently that the phrase ‘play it again Sam’ actually WAS in Casablanca. Lost all respect for the Ivies right then.
one of the greatest movies ever.
almost every line a classic
“Have you ever been in Trukish prison?”
You should have slapped that New Haven rodent into next week! Is it wrong that me and Billy Bragg remain in love with Ingrid Bergman?
the goat!!
SnowGrit anyone? Ryan Wedding, pro snowboarder turned drug kingpin, now one of FBI’s top 10 most wanted

Lest we forget that it is always easy to know the person you just met did NOT attend Harvard. If they didn’t attend Harvard, they won’t weave their Harvard credentials into the conversation within the first 120 seconds of the conversation…
I had a job in Mill Valley this summer. Every woman that introduced herself mentioned that she was in residency with the Bride. EVERY woman. And I was being social.
It was their way of telling me they were a doctor.
Not surprised! Most, but not all doctors miss out on how to function in social settings away from Med school during their 20s. I have found that orthopedic surgeons are the most normal, especially those who’ve performed a surgery on me.
EDIT: Is it wrong of me to wonder if you spent any quality time with those doctors?
It was odd, they were kind in their observations of my work and forward in there approach.
Single and relatively hot at 40 plus? I see a lot of gatherings…. not often such a talent pool available beyond 30.
Bride was an ortho, funny enough. It’s like you were there.
Conversely, there was a point at my reception table when I knew I was the least intelligent and the least accomplished human. Talk about bragging, I just sat there and smiled. Stayed in my lane, they liked me and hated each other. Not hated, but there was an edge to the table of “residencies”.
That’s the point where you open your card wallet. And flip out a Beach Grit air freshener into the table. Those who know will know.
Think about that table and how few of them have ever paddled out or climbed a mountain in winter to experience the humility our earth provides us? I know that type well and most of those docs, especially the specialists, truly need a spouse or partner who will be subservient to their careers. They’re too busy competing with each other due the brutal med school environment that shaped that mindset. a mindset that isn’t much different from what I experienced on Wall Street(without the excesses) after my ski bum days. Finally, they may be book smart in their professional disciplines but that fails to match street smarts…

…but some are over achievers and have also done all of the above, case in point this orthopod.
Great pic… just looking at how dynamic that move is I can feel my labia tearing in two places!
Yes, he’s giving it a bit of stick.
with a couple exceptions, some of the dumbest lawyers I’ve ever encountered have been Ivy League educated.
Ok, now I have to think about that one. Off the top of my head most of my favorite, no pretense lawyers came from midwestern law schools. Now I have to look back at contacts from a few decades ago to recall the guilty from when I spent a fair amount of time on litigation and regulatory projects with lawyers in NYC. Most that I worked with were generally older and over their BS chest thumping, Macallan 25 and empty suit Armani/Brioni showy stages. Michigan law seems to stick out on the positive side.
Virginia Law = beer and softball, or so I’m told
My wife vetoes hiring Harvard JD’s anytime she can. University of Wisconsin knows how to work
Is the west coast version USC? Where at any given chance when work attire is not enforced they wear USC attire to let you know they went there? And a license plate frame in case your driving behind them.
So true
While I’m a 2x USC legacy I chose not to attend there knowing I wasn’t pretty enough and my oldest got in and decided he too wasn’t “SC material” for the very reasons you posted. BUT I will have 2 semi normal SC grads at my Thanksgiving table next week…FIGHT On or is it FUCK OFF?
Where is Otto defending Trump’s fingering of Bubba’s bumhole during his performance of the “Rusty Saxophone”?
Pretty sure is fulfilling the obligations of his 50K signing bonus…
that’s a good joke
Who’s joking?
ICE see what you did there.
Man you are taking it to the borderline.
It only Mex sense!
Few want to think about the visual you project!
Bubba beaming that shit eating grin.
Xox
Bubba shot the jukebox!
I woulda thought youd be the one defending it .??
Not into man on man porn but would definitely cop that footage.
Xox
Larry Summers is and has always been a self-promoting provocateur passing off his personal biases as actual science by exploiting evolutionary theories in contexts where they can’t be falsified, much less supported by evidence. He’s a fraud driven by ego and arrogance, embodying much of what’s wrong with academia.
Would definitely fit in great in Beach Grit comments though!
nicely written.
Obviously, you are not a Harvard Graduate
Yeah no. I had to work for a living 😉
Grammar and spelling, details, facts….
All that has no bearing on the
anti-depressive beacon that Beach Grit has come to represent.
Probs typing with thumbs on Blackberry, as was the fashion.
Man I could thumb out some seething rant group emails on that thing, probably better it died it’s inevitable death.
Skippy is it wrong to hang onto relics of your past life? https://uploads.disquscdn.c…
What is on the cassette? I can’t read it because it’s in PENCIL!
It is a recording of a rescue mission for a downed F-105 pilot during the Vietnam war
Nice “I’m gunna live forever” drawer.
I put mine in stubby boxes
I’m laughing as I don’t have a good reason to hang onto those relics.
No.
the passport, what a great phone!
I probably hung on to those relics too long just to piss people off
tantamount to paramount?
Exactly.
Bad grammar in professional emails is a flex if done by principals. Same deal with tech bros wearing sweatshirts to business meetings. It communicates to everyone that they can skate on rules that everyone else has to follow.
Like big fat slow orange?
Nah homie upped that ante with a sharpie pen.
You forgot short-fingered as well.
I know this dude that litters his house with designer athletic shoes, has an acrylic case illuminated with sneakers too. Everywhere you go you’re tripping on tennis shoes.
What you notice is how big they are, and I wear a size 11 US. These things are a 14 minimum, but I’ve never seen dude run. Doesn’t make enough money to collect shoes either.
Visited with his chick recently and he comes out of the shower getting dressed and I noticed his feet, maybe size 8 US ??????
“He likes people to think he’s got big feet” She said it with a straight face. I decided to pursue the investigation when he was alone out of her earshot.
SHIT, I’m only a size 10 and I only buy cheap athletic shoes ideally on sale.
went through a sneaker phase – now have 50 pairs of dunks and jordans and air maxes that I move out of the way to get to my crocs lol
I’d wear slaps all day if I could get away with it. Are Crocs cool again?
I like that being a flex of the white collar crew. As a Strayan tradie the biggest flex I can think of is one of the fellas vortexing a long neck at knock off on a Monday
White men CAN d(r)unk!
