Grom immolation terror grips surf world after Ocean & Earth issues recall on youth changing ponchos

"WARNING HIGH FIRE DANGER."

There are many multiple things about for which surfers to worry in these troubling times. The erasure of the middle class, the potential for war in South America, a rise in authoritarianism, Elon Musk’s trillion dollar pay package. Chief amongst all concerns this morning, though, is the threat of groms bursting into flames as they change either in to or out of wetsuits before or after a surf.

Ocean & Earth, an Australian based producer of “surf essentials” like surf hats and towels, was forced to release a sweeping recall for its toddlers, kids and youth hooded ponchos. An overnight email was sent to those on the mailing list reading:

We would like to address a labelling matter concerning our Ocean & Earth Toddlers, Kids & Youth Hooded ponchos that you may have purchased. While the safety of these products is not compromised, we regret to inform you that they do not comply with Product Safety Standard laws due to the absence of the red fire hazard warning label shown below:

The red fire hazard warning label not a gentle reminder to merely be careful but rather a full-throated, all caps cry.

Grom Immolation Terror Grips Surf World After Ocean &Amp; Earth Issues Recall On Youth Changing Ponchos 2

Terror gripped parents are instructed to keep their changing poncho charges away from flame, isolated in the middle of the beachfront parking lot, screaming at those around to put out cigarettes while immediately contacting Ocean & Earth subsidiary Exit Surf in order to request the above label.

It will be sent with instructions on how to attach it to the garment.

More as the story develops.

I wish 8 rounds and granade would only have injured him. When I picked up his body from Camp Pendleton the told me they tried to piece it back together the best they could.

Also, ISIS formed in Iraq/Syria after the first wave in 2007 according to ISIS.

Beat me to it, Groms smoking bongs under the poncho to keep the wind from blowing out the flame might get more than they bargained for!
That being said , who buys a hooded changing poncho anyhow? Soemeones mum maybe? gay as fuck, give me a crusty towel out of the boot any day

Despite having to purchase an thermal rashie from said brand, I’ve never considered OE a proper surf brand for some reason. They always felt like a general outdoor apparel company that dabbled in surf as well as like, hiking pajamas and kayaking underwear or whatever.

I think that was a later pivot. Very core company started by seventies shredder Brian Cregan (Band on the Run) who is also daddy to Skegss/Greg’s Toby Cregan, specialising in leashes. Made a ton from bodyboards in the nineties I believe.

great company back in the 80’s. some great products
some of the best travel socks/bags, and Big Wave leashes were good.

don’t know if you remember Fat Ron, the O&E rep in HI, but he dialed me in with a lot of great gear.
I still have some old O&E shirts still in good shape.

Even if initially the towel fuelled the fire, surely the grom inside it would eventually smother it, no?

basically a hooded towel – was actually a welcome addition back when I first encountered them about 10 years ago or so, when the outside temps were near freezing and had to change out of a wetsuit into a real suit after a quick dawn patrol session before heading to the office.

in VB, this literally transformed the local surf scene. High priced houses south of the inlet were so incensed at daily naked surfers they convinced the city to ban parking in the area (but for a couple small slots) and effectively killed a thriving surf spot due to lack of access.

Then again, the entire city oceanfront is shit when it comes to swell magnification, so not much of a loss. And with the new Atlantic park wave pool, I guess no one cares about beach access anymore regardless.

That said, I’ve spent more time in water in Cali than VB for last 6 years, so all good

I went to that city council meeting, and methinks the main reason the street parking got banned was the emergency vehicle access. Residents stating that with the street parking it was too tight for the fire trucks/ambulances.

There were a lot of residents complaining about nudity + 5am loud music, but all that stuff was already illegal.

Lots of attorneys who knew the right thing to complain about.

interesting, that’s a throwback moment for sure. Was a fun spot at times back in the early 90s, could always find a little peak that wasn’t too crowded.

Loose fitting but flammable clothes is apparently a very big deal in the apparel industry. Kids polyester pajamas have huge warnings about them being dangerous in a fire if they’re loose fitting.

That’s basically the case here. Kiddos ponchos are classed as sleepwear. Adults free to sleep in their ponchos at will.
