Ikon Pass succeeds in ambitious mission to clog mountains with kooks

"What if all the resorts could be turned into versions of Malibu, San-O and Noosa on their very worst days?"

It’s middle fall, in the northern hemisphere. That time of year when surfers begin thinking about swapping 3/2s for 4/3s and also mentally planning the yearly snowboard/ski trip. Whether a quick blast to Big Bear or a weekend jaunt in Mammoth, a big splurge at fancy Jackson Hole or a hippie trip to Taos, sliding down majestic mountains is a glorious reprieve from ocean lineups jammed with all manner of kook, VAL, barney and blow-in.

Yes, surfing has been destroyed (hate it here) but the palisades, peaks and pikes ahhhh. Simply too big to ruin. Naturally un-taint-able.

Or so it might have been thought.

For in 2018, you see, the American hospitality company Alterra saw opportunity. What if all the resorts could be turned into versions of Malibu, San-O and Noosa on their very worst days? Clogged beyond clogged with jerries, gapers and jongs?

Well, the Alterra brass put heads together and came up with the Ikon Pass, unlimited season tickets that would provide access to 60+ mountains for one fee. The idea took a few years to really take hold but take hold it did and wow.

This winter, the surfer seeking respite from the masses will be met with all of them standing in line waiting to fall whilst getting off the lift. Like the kook, VAL, barney and blow-in, they won’t know the rules nor will they care. Outfits new and garish. Many unnecessary accessories. Much entitlement. Little to no skill.

The Ikon Pass succeeded in not just blowing out the spot, but blowing out ALL the spots at once.

A wonderful and heretofore unseen extension of extreme sport stupidity and greed.

Bravo.

What were these ski places like in the 90s? No crowds? Smaller crowds? Cheap lift tickets? I come not from the mountain.

The population centers in the US such as CO-Denver, CA- Bay area, UT-SLC, NH, VT- Boston, NYC & the 95 corridor that can support day or weekend skiers drove the initial trajectory of these pass products. Europe is just now catching on to the Epic/ikon pricing model but they seem to be fighting it due to their much cheaper daily rates. Now think about putting $1,000-$1,500 annually towards a ski pass that if you use it 10-15 days each season brings your cost per day down to a reasonable per day expense. Still not cheap but justifiable if skiing is your sport. Add into the equation the covid dynamic and skiers crowded US resorts at levels never seen before but now skier numbers are coming down, significantly so in the overnight stay skier numbers, less so for day trippers. This ties into your rich kid Mammoth comment. So Ikon and Epic both improved their non-season pass products this year in a flat consumer market in an attempt to capture the 2-8 day skier traffic. The outcome is TBD

Picard Madeoff

Chas! You nailed it as Eric and his minions at KSL(the owners of Alterra) are crushing financially it as they diversify while arguably ruining the ski experience for all by buying ski resorts and/or signing marketing agreements to feed the Ikon beast. Same for Rob Katz at Vail but unlike Rob, Eric and his boys bought CMH and Wiegele so they can control heli-skiing as well. Hence the reason I mostly ski in the backcountry(30 plus days/season) versus lift served(15-20 days/season) these days.

BUT the day of reckoning is upon them all as the ski area jewels are all spoken for now and skier numbers are flat so we are left to wonder how will they pivot to grow?

Picard Madeoff

Why? Read the Qs and Ks Vail(symbol MTN) puts out to understand their profitability focus around lifts, lodging and services. The slug of revenue they receive for season passes is basically what keeps them afloat these days in a flat market segment. So the Epic and Ikon pass trajectories involve marketing to each other’s customer base each year to sell passes.

Imagine…. skiing is waiting to paddle out.

Elitist.

I’m thankful that there is not an off season as a surfer while elite coastal livers put on their snow bro beanies during the most consistent surf of the year.

Surfer on a ski trip? The crowd causing kook is in the mirror

Keith Grace

Chas… don’t forget about the fine work of Vail Resorts too and the Epic pass… they ruined Vermont (if not out west too) long before this November… snowboarding over here on the ice coast used to be the escape from kook crowded summer line-ups in New Jersey… now it’s the same summer wavestormers clogging lift lines with country music -blaring Bluetooth speakers, Dope jackets, and step-in bindings… thanks Vail…

It will all be perfect when LiveNation acquires marketing rights…online ticketing and 9 additional junk fees.

Edwardo Mundial

That day has to be coming soon with the former CEO of LiveNation sitting in the CEO seat at Alterra Mtn Co.

Mikey Febs would have no problem navigating those crowds.

I used to drive a 79 four door Volvo. Great car and a tank. Slept on the beach at Manresa on a surf trip and was driving out to the freeway in the morning, foggy and wet road and half asleep.

Slid out on a curve and went right through a barbwire fence into a cow pasture. Only damage was a flat tire. Changed it, backed out and went on our way.

frank

I owned one too. Tank engines, literally!

also wtf downvoted me? an angry kneeboarder, obvs!
