Well what a day for surf fans everywhere. While the World Surf League’s Championship Tour is not set to get underway until April, or thereabouts, a buzz is rippling. Thrill percolating. Yes, Carissa Moore, the world’s greatest surfer, holding five titles and one Olympic gold medal to Kelly Slater’s none, is making a stunning return for the 2026 season after a shock retirement some 2-ish years ago.
I’m really excited for the opportunity to compete again on the Championship Tour,” Moore told the WSL. “To put my jersey back on after having a baby feels like such a win. Competing at the highest level of surfing is something I don’t take for granted, and I’m so grateful to be feeling healthy and reinvigorated. I want my journey to show my daughter, and hopefully other women, that we can do anything; we can keep chasing our dreams, even as life evolves. I’m looking forward to sharing this next chapter with her and experiencing it together as a family.”
The main reason for return, though, might be the dumping of former WSL CEO Erik Logan’s horrible and bad ideas. A source with knowledge of such things shared, “Thanks to astute new leadership, the sport no longer gifting a Championship for one lucky afternoon, but rewarding a Championship for one incredible season? Title Legitimacy Restored!”

One of the harder parts about contest surfing is getting your good stuff into a 30 min heat. Carissa is a lot better at that than Caity and Molly even ifMolly and Caity’s highs are higher.
edit: Also Carissa still has an advantage in heavier waves.

Reminds me of my first hell cheap Indo boat trip when I was 18. We got mental waves, had heaps of laughs but fuck some of of the late night/early morning noises coming from the other bunks will haunt me forever
