"...made my son cry."
So there I was, yesterday, minding my own business, when I accidentally stumbled across a headline in Entertainment Weekly reading, “Steven Spielberg refused to work with Ben Affleck because of pool fight on a family vacation, filmmaker claims” and immediately thought, “Uh oh. Did Ben Affleck go full surf dad?”
I quickly put down the Christmas gifts that I wasn’t wrapping due distraction, clicked on the story and had my fears confirmed. Filmmaker Mike Binder had learned about the incident whilst he and Spielberg were working on the initial drafts of what would later become the 2006 bust Man About Town. Binder, who wanted Affleck to star, told the Jaw’s director such and Spielberg allegedly responded, “‘No. Can’t do it with [Affleck]. We just bombed with a movie with him, he’s got that whole J. Lo thing going on now, and I have other problems with him…”
Binder pressed what “other problems,” Spielberg purportedly bringing up a time when his family was on vacation with Affleck and his goddaughter Gwyneth Paltrow, back when those two were an item, and Affleck pitched his kid in the swimming pool.
“‘Ben came in fully dressed and my son pushed Ben into the pool,” Binder says he was told, “…and Ben got really mad at him, and he came out of the pool and he picked him up and threw him back into the pool and made my son cry.'”
Classic surf dad rage.
But who, here, has never picked up a child not wanting to swim and heaved him or her into a swimming pool? Who, here, hasn’t repeated at least ten times with either own children, nieces, nephews, the spazzy son of a friend of a friend?
It is a very important ritual of the surf dad. The fact that Ben Affleck became enraged by getting pushed into the pool fully clothed shows that he was not a surf dad, then. The fact that he pitched the boy into the drink shows that there is hope.
Springing eternal.
Do you have a favorite “tossing-kid-in-pool” tale?
Share, please.
Holy Barmitzvah batman, two Jews fighting in a pool, which one is oppressed?
Bomb Gaza!!!!!
all of us who know spielberg–knows he is a “can’t kick a ball, catch a ball or throw a ball” type
Can make a bloody good movie though. I don’t care for his ball skills.
propaganda films/slanted toward zio….the ball skills remark is about his character, whiny and entitled
Spielberg, famously powerful because of… ball skills? If that’s your takeaway, maybe films aren’t the issue here
Is it impossible for you, to go deeper? I know the guy and both of his wives. He is a wimpy punk, a propagandist, with wide open budgets. He (most likely is intimidated by Ben) and he is raising his son as a crybaby, spoiled to end up whiny. For a clue, look up Spielberg’s adopted daughter
Sure thing mate, a bloke on a surf forum is close enough to Spielberg to pontificate on how he raises his kids who range in age from 29-49. They ain’t kids no more.
refreshing to read other pontifications other than Ke11y’s..
a friend of mine knows Steven Spielberg.
the actual story is that the lads nanny was changing young Spielberg who boasted to his nanny:
“time for someone to hit the Pool”.
The Nanny responded “Bien, Bien”.
………and that’s how Ben ended up in the pool.
The nanny was subsequently fired and deported, which is what actually made the kid cry.
And now you know……the rest of the story
Lovely story
Merry Christmas Hippy
You too brother
Tony Hawk upstaging Chas, or nut?

That was straight up embarrassing. A mockery of both skateboarding and ballet.
Even a big hoop dress couldn’t have saved him from such shame.
Merry Christmas Chas!
100%
Merry Christmas Mother Ginger
I sure Santa brings a who’s better at father/daughter ballet relationship and onstage performance blood feud article. Is that so much to ask ol’ saint nick?
fuck that’s cringe.
Kris Cringle
I remember this guy…from ages Argo
Happy Saturnalia, Sol Invictus, and Yule!
At my wife’s family party, her auntie…yep the one that always talks trash and instigates squabbles was talking trash and trying to instigate squabbles. I picked her up as she sat in her pool chair and tossed her in, chair and all…….having no idea she didn’t know how to swim.
She lost it, freaking out, on the verge of drowning until i told her “stand up”, as she was only in 4 feet of water.
She hated me for years after.
“Throw her in the pool…. If she comes up laughing she’s a keeper”
best thing about this was that Lola, the matriarch of the family who was a major provocateur and the best at instigating squabble, was there and thought it to be one of the funniest things she had ever seen, which meant we became besties for the remainder of her life.
I’m always amazed that somone can grow up in Hawaii and not know how to swim in some rudimentary fashion.
soz, i should have mentioned, this was the radiant Mrs. Campers auntie……who lives in San Francisco.
Not so much tossing, but I’m regularly dropping them off at the pool whilst reading BG articles
youth IDF conscription
Sink or swim, baby.
That’s how we were taught to swim at the YMCA in the 60s…
Spielberg softer than most of the soft cocks on the BG chat.
Monty would applaud the Jew’s creativity, though.
A quick google will confirm that Ben almost never smiles and usually appears to be staring some sort of existential dread in the face. So, yeah maybe don’t push that cunt in the pool.
Its stressful not knowing where to put all your money.
Or proof, that no one is happy
Since I have been on a memory lane journey I do have a favorite kid tossing story.
I was the grom, forgot how old, trolling around a pool in an apartment complex in Santa Monica, when I came up on
Lou Ferrigno during his peak Hulk days, and after much begging, he happily threw me across the legnth of the pool to the deep end, over and over.
The guy was and still is a legend to me.
Oh that’s fantastic…
Nice one. Tbh my 7-yr old self is green with envy.
He should be happy it wasn’t a close encounter of the fourth kind. A surf Mom. Yeah, I’m looking at you London’s Mom.
Tossing kids in pools?
