Shark season sure has arrived in Sydney with two shark attacks in two days: a kid is in a hell of a shape after being attacked by a big bull shark yesterday afternoon at a harbour beach near Bondi and a short time ago, a kid was hit while surfing at Dee Why, a little south of where Mercury Psillakis was killed by a Great White in September.
Per the Manly Observer,
A shark took one clean bite out of a young surfer’s board at Dee Why this morning, 19 January 2026.
Several smaller bites are also visible on the board.
While unharmed, the local child is understandably rattled by the experience, which occurred mid-morning at Dee Why Point.
Witnesses say they saw what looked like a bull shark possibly 4 or 5 foot long, but this is unconfirmed.
The 11-year-old Dee Why local says he was kicked off his board when the shark lunged up then a few bites were taken out of the board – one removing a section of the board entirely. The boy was unharmed.
The boy’s father was paddling back out at the time and was able to meet him in the water, where he had been aided by an older grom nearby after he screamed for help.
Meanwhile, a wild ol story has emerged about the kid who was hit by a big bull after taking on the twenty-foot jump rock near Nielsen Park. This jump rock is real popular with the local kids. High enough to give pause for thought but not so high y’think death or paralysis lurks. It’s a two-stroke paddle back to the rock shelf so any thought of sharks, pretty common in the harbour, quickly evaporates.
When the kid jumped and the shark hit, another pal jumped in and dragged him to the rock shelf. Dunno about you but a frenzying bull shark tearing into a pal is just about the terrifying thing you might imagine.
As a cop told reporters, “We can confirm … one boy definitely entered the water to pull his mate out and the other boys assisted them up from the water onto the rock platform, and that was just before the police (arrived).
“So those actions of those young men are brave, under those circumstances, and very confronting injuries for those boys to see.
“But I suppose that’s mateship.”
There’s a theory stemming from Reunion Island that painting eyes on the bottom of your board deters sharks. Theory is moot.
Is it just me or does the bite look almost perfectly symmetrical to the eye graphic. Maybe sharpeyes is needed
