"Just ridiculous…Broke companies considered the best…"
The one-time surf media juggernaut Surfer, described by Matt Warshaw at its peak as “part surf club, part Warhol Factory, part The Office”, delivered a stunning slap in the face to Dane Reynolds and Julian Wilson earlier today.
In a piece entitled The 9 Best Surf Brands in the world, storied writer Jason Lock, “Director of Brand and Strategic Partnerships for DYSJUO, a UK house of brands encompassing Wavelength Surf Magazine, Longboarder Magazine, 10 Over Surf Shop, Marwick Marketing, Cass : ette (high-end video production company), UK Surf & Skate Expo and Ctrl Alt Del (brand reputation management)” lists the surf brands that “continue to push beyond the remit.”
The 9 Best Surf Brands in the World according to Surfer: Patagonia “The mindful surfer’s choice”, Vans “Roots in skate and surf”, Quiksilver “Taking surfing to the mainstream”, Billabong “Global surf heritage”, Florence Marine X “Master and Product”, Rip Curl “Reputation through wetsuits”, Outerknown “Slater’s answer to apparel”, RCVA “Balancing cultures” and O’Neill “OG wetsuit innovation.”
Nowhere mentioned are the breakthrough brands, Former and Rivvia Projects, and piloted by Dane Reynolds and Julian Wilson.
You’ll remember the terrific noise four years ago when Julian Wilson, a one-time contender for the world title, released the debut clothing range of his brand Rivvia Projects, the handle a portmanteaux of the names of his two kids River and Olivia, and which quickly became famous for tight poom-poom shorts and radically aggressive off-the-shoulder tees.
Its regular sales a boon for parents looking to outfit their chillun in garments not owned by a hedge fund vulture.
And it’s been almost a decade, can you believe, since the Slacker King Dane Reynolds introduced his Former brand.
The world number four, father of three, and millionaire a few times over had become the most famous surfer of his generation, usurping the authority of pro surfing as the arbiter of best surfing, with his own performances and, later, his body of work for Marine Layer and its sequel Chapter 11 TV, and rolled that fame into Former.
Former was started with Craig Anderson, Austyn Gillette and the late, great and beautiful Dylan Rieder although it’s fair to say Reynolds is the master of that ship. The clothing is best described as a feline sophistication brought to the fashion game.
Again, like Rivvia, Former has very good sales and the Reynolds panty has become a staple for one of my own kids.
So why ignored by Surfer?
Chas Smith offered clues into the magazine’s surf bona fides a few years back.
If there is one particularly ugly blight in the apocalypse we are currently living, it is the reanimation of once-proud Surfer Magazine. Purchased by The Arena Group a Toledo-sized handful of years ago, the dormant “bible of the sport” was given over to just pre-sentient robots named “Emily Morgan,” “Jake Howard” etc. and ordered to gobble up anything surf related. The bits and bytes were, then, repackaged with the purpose of duping the naive and/or unsuspecting into reading.
Surfer’s own readers were quick to bite the hand offering the dirty morsels.
Just ridiculous…Broke companies considered the best…
Best brands? ❌️ contributing brands? ✅️
Google: Rip Curl North Korea and then get back to me about “reputation”
Billabong, Quik or Former/Rivvia.
Let’s play a little fuck, marry, kill.
Go etc.
Jules there – seething at seeing ‘non-Australians’ in the surf brand rankings.
Gosh! He famously declared, ‘I guess I’m back’ after being given wildcard entry to the Bonsoy Gold Coast pro where he had fun, just, splashing water around in the final and verbally harassing his competitor over the fact that people were cheering. Wow.
Julian loves to golf, as does Griff, and of course our very own Brisa Hennessy.
Brisa’s Dad, Mike, is an incredible fisherman. Gosh, he goes out for the day and comes back with enough catch to feed the entire tour!
Western fishermen of course makes us think of Jesus Christ, which in turn of course makes us all think of Erin Brooks…
Erin and Bella love to chat, gosh, they’re both so humble, so kind, so centred.
TajB house on the market as ex wife turns the screws on settlement , oh well he can always hang with the schoolies.
and the kids ???
Not sure how you split the kids 80 /20 i guess
Dane could had rode out a few more years with Quik back then and made a lot of $ before things went to sh_t. I to own a broke company – my overhead is my storage unit at $200. – Jack English
Note: going from a successful pro to a struggling clothing brand – one’s ego get’s popped very fast https://uploads.disquscdn.c…
Imagine at this point in 2026, a “Surfer Mag” top-5 surfboard shapers/builders/pop-outers list…
Don’t you smell advertorial?
Maybe it’s my upper lip.
I flicked through a shit surf magazine in the newsagents the other day. Sooo many ads it was hilarious actually. Might as well have been a sportsbet magazine. And then there it was…a girl doing a layback worse than Tyler. WORSE…
I think they wanted 22 aus shekels for it.
Curious… which actual surf industry players were advertising?
mainly atol travel and other travel parasites getting you to clog up the ments and Maldives
Chloe will be spewing that his brand didn’t get a mention about not being mentioned.
https://uploads.disquscdn.c… .
Slava Ukraine !
Jorts!
Fuck each and every surf brand equally.
No favorites, they all suck
And a magazine that owes allegiance to them is called advertising. The writing, Ad Copy. Sales brochures. Ironic that old school sales hates new skool sales, same fucking shit.
Go Rams!!
gO Sea Eagles!!
Absolutely!!
Eagles punter highest paid in NFL….
What is wrong with yous? Quik release a range by that Maori fella, and then the bong release an Aboriginal range by Otis Carey and you cunts are still whinging and carrying on. Put your money where your mouths are cuz nothing says I care about the plights of our Indigenous brothers like forking out $80 for a pair of poorly made boardies by a huge, global conglomerate company that cares nothing about anything but its bottom line. I was even going to buy a Rip Curl steamer and hack a leg off it to show my support for Tyler and the gay community but its just too hot here to wear it
You’re wearing another mans advertising
Isn’t that the definition of “tool”?
I think you ‘re missing my sarcasm mate haha
Nah man. Celebrating it.
otis carey is still alive?
Or bypass the middleman and go straight to AI!
why is everyone pushing for their replacement?
Never seen such passive victims as I do today.
Personally, I couldn’t imagine life without AI anymore. Studying is such a breeze!
My sister teaches HS english and can spot AI a mile away….
What are you studying?
I think we all know what Derek studies an it aint English !
Another shark attack DY. Kids ok, boards fuked
I think fixable.
At least milk a new custom
There’s a few unwaxed Sharp Eye guns from Pip kicking around. Maybe they could give to shark kid.
You should grab one D
I’ll bet they feel so sexy
I reckon I’ve clawed back on more sets than even Pip.
When he’s grooving…. best of show.
So butter. Complete mastery.
Has anyone caught themselves nearly drooling holding a new board under their arm and testing the weight ratio nose to tail? And when one feels right? Holy fuck, could ruin marriages. The curves feel perfect, rocker begging to plane and release. Subtle bottom until you turn on the lights, shadows tell the tale. Or Tail.
Tried to type like Derek, my apologies. But it happened to me on Friday and I felt like I cheated on my quiver. Ok, truth told, I tossed off to that board. Not on it, I went home first without it. So fucking sexy.
I definitely constitute as someone who watches/peruses board pornography regularly. With the soft slop that is Southern California, I’ve even gotten into Dan Mann’s Sweet Potato by Firewire. I think I need professional help.
Fucking oath you do cunt. First a longboard and now a fucking pop out made in Singapore. My professional help is get the fuck out of Slo Cal, head overseas and get some fucking proper waves bruz
We didn’t have a choice
Doctor’s orders! Thankfully my wallet hasn’t gotten hit by th withdrawal of what would be $2200 for both of those would-be blades
GO to Board Source Carlabad…..Firewires at $599
I thought I posted this….but go to Board Source Carlsbad….Firewires start at $599 for a seaside Machado…….sooo many cheap firewires!
As if I couldn’t make this thread hate me anymore… I have FCS and it seems like all the boards I run into are futures >~<
nah each to his own….we all have different ideas on surfing/surfboards……and yeah Firewire changed to futures as FCSII was too weak in EPS….but great deals at BS….they will even sort ya fins check out their online store…..tell em I sent ya for a better deal!!
Aw jeez I’m blushing—might have a go!
hey the have the biggest range of new and S/H bds I have everseen and…the people that work there are so fucken switched on….maybe you can have a complete makeover and get onto Futures???
Lol do you work at the boardsource??
I do futures for all twins, big base twins. But all the thrusties are the FCS plugs. Always use the double screws.
Fun fact, I was all futures as a grom and then a guy a got a board from biffed the order and forced me down the FCS path… it’s been a good 12 years!
Also, I find the FCS info about the fins makes waaaay more sense than the futures. The latter is often very vague about specs
you poor bastard !!!
I’m more economically minded to the gal who’s seen a few and has the foot dents to match.
Picked up a sweet one on Saturday for pennies. Probably not enough volume but I’m a sucker for punishment these days. Feeling a spring in my step despite the lack of hair on my head. Definitely the most modren hi-perf sled I’ve owned since the 90’s. Gave it a little of ding-patching to bring it back to razor sharp.
Frothing to make a tit of myself on it. Maybe tomorrow morning if the wind chills the fuck out briefly.
I’m beginning to feel backsides again with a wink and a nudge and hoping to once again throw the ole’ blind spray like a youngster again.
Tally ho!
Lolol. Nice. 👌🏽
Its a bit much for the ol psyche.
Worth about 10 times what he paid for it in trophy value.
I do live in Japan, so I may be a little location biased, but I can’t recall the last time I bought anything here outside of Uniqlo or GU (basically the same as Uniqlo). Shoes, shorts, collars, undies, longjohns, you name it, I buy it and wear it. Simple, cheap, durable, good fitting. The only embarrassing thing is going into Uniqlo to buy something new decked out in 9 items of clothing I bought from Uniqlo…
Brands? Loyalty? Cool? Pffft. I got two young kids and soon AI might gobble my job up. Here’s a portmanteaux of my feelings for surf brands: fuckoffyaripoffs
yeah bro
Uniqlo fucking rocks.
How’s Japanese living? Hopefully you’re not in Osaka.
Hard to say mate, been here 21 years so forgot what Australia living is! Japan living just seems normal to me now. Not in Osaka, but you don’t like? I’m in the sticks, near the waves.
Amazing. I thought it was a rad country. Coming back to the states I was immediately confronted with the downsides of hyper individualism. The premium on respect there really stood out to me. As a whole just amazingly civilized, at least to someone just observing.
Osaka was one of the most crowded spots I’ve ever been to. Hyper-commercial. The arcades were incel central. Claustrophobia at an all time high and somehow also agoraphobia.
Also, best döner kebab I’ve ever had was in Tokyo. Mustafa from Ankara, Turkey.
Uniqlo is great, i just hope they never uncover any slavery sweat shop supply chain issues as i’d have to burn a good part of my clothes. Online sale prices sometimes make me wonder it’s almost too good to be true.
Don’t burn em, mate. Just wear them until they need to be replaced.
Only those special folks burn stuff they bought.
The last time I was down under I went to Uniqlo to pick up some basic T’s on my way out. I was in a rush and grabbed what I thought were just the basic black/white crew necks as they were up front and center. Lone behold when I get home I try them on in front of the wife and right away I could see the disapointment in her eyes. She says thats not really your style. She was right. They were those baggy, heavy duty super long short sleeves the ozzies love to wear these days. They are now at goodwill.
