January 17 (January 18 in Australia) will go down in history as surfing’s new Christmas Morning after it was revealed that Tom DeLonge, from Blink-182 and Angels and Airwaves fame, is officially teaming up with surfing’s Matt George on a new cinematic surf drama titled “Bali Hai.”
Deadline is reporting that Tom DeLonge will produce through his To The Stars company while George, “one of the most influential voices in surf journalism for more than three decades” will write and co-produce.
Filming is set to get underway in Bali this coming October.
Stan Spry, who is also producing through his Evoke Entertainment, declared, “Matt George isn’t just a great writer — he’s one of the definitive storytellers of surf culture,” later adding, “In God’s Hands (written by George) was an iconic film for my generation, something my friends and I watched endlessly. To collaborate with Matt on a surf film that returns to that raw, soulful spirit — and to do it in Bali — truly feels like a dream come true.”
It is the only recorded time in history anyone has ever said anything positive about In God’s Hands.
The film currently has a 0% Rotten Tomatoes score though George, for his part, has a real sense of humor about it, calling it a “$10 million disaster movie.”
Bali Hai, again according to Deadline, “follows two estranged brothers who travel to Bali for an international surf competition, confronting long-buried wounds while immersed in one of the world’s most iconic surf destinations.”
