"A new age of hate" and life behind the Orange Curtain.
There was once a time, not even very long ago, when surfing had an industry and that industry had a home. Orange County, California. Much like Silicon Valley is synonymous with technology and Detroit with American-made automobiles, Orange County was Big Surf. Clothing brands like Quiksilver, Hurley, Volcom and Op maintained sprawling headquarters in Costa Mesa, Irvine and Newport Beach. Surfboard brands like Lost grew to fame and fortune in San Clemente. Huntington Beach battled, and beat, Santa Cruz for the official title of Surf City, USA.
A gilded age but also riddled with beachside “morning meet-up spots for neo-Nazis in skeleton masks training for ‘white unity’ combat?”
In his new book, American Reich, author Eric Lichtblau examines “Orange County, Neo-Nazis and a new age of hate” by using the murder of young gay Jewish man, Blaze Bernstein, at the hand Newpies local Samuel Woodward in Lake Forest in 2018 as backdrop.
“Lichtblau began the book in 2020, in the midst of COVID,” LA Times writer Beavin Pappas explains. “He wanted to find a place emblematic of the national epidemic that he, like many others, was witnessing — some of the highest record of anti-Asian attacks, assaults on Black, Latino and LGBTQ+ communities, and rising extremist rhetoric and actions.”
“Orange County kind of fit a lot of those boxes,” Lichtblau told Pappas. “The horrible tragedy with Blaze Bernstein being killed by one of his high school classmates — who had been radicalized — reflected a growing brazenness of the white supremacy movement we’ve seen as a whole in America in recent years.”
In reviewing the book, Pappas explains how he, too, grew up behind the “Orange Curtain” and experienced much lightly closeted white supremacist leanings which have transmorphed into modern day MAGAism.
Focusing on the January 6 Capitol storming, Lichtblau explains many people thought those involved came not from deeply conservative deep south pockets but rather “From places like Orange County. This was white pride on display. There was a lot of neo-Nazi stuff, including a lot of Orange County people stuff.”
American Reich explores how Orange County came to be such, from early clashes with migrant orange pickers to a desire to distance itself from “liberal” neighboring Los Angeles to, now, a symbol of deeply ingrained hatred which, according to Pappas, is “reactivated by a far-right digital landscape that connects these members and multiplies their ideologies on a national level.”
Good thing, I suppose, that the surf industry got sold for parts and no longer exists.

I think the one nuance that is missed in all of this is that “white supremacists” are not all Neo-Nazi’s nor fans of Hitler, and not all Nazi’s (Neo nazi’s) were/are white.

I was part of a large community that surfed, partied and traveled together for decades. George Bush invaded a country that had done nothing to us as a response to a terror tragedy. Saudi Arabia had attacked us and Israel filmed the attack, the US was “surprised”. Instead of retaliating against our “allies”, we chose to destroy Iraq for oil. No other premise makes sense. Motivations were lied and loudly, found to be untrue and managing that country was more than Bush Inc could handle. No exit strategy, we’ll wait for the Democrats to have balls and pull out of the conflicts, then blame them for the mess.

Both my mom and dad are from Minnesota and I would go back there every summer. I remember driving in Minneapolis with my grandmother and she always told me to keep my door locked and window rolled up because the “darkies” might run out and and attack our car with a metal pipe.

I actually saw blazing boards when it came out. I was living in Santa Cruz’s and the filmer I think was from Monterey and he played it in a small bar down there. That’s the one with Padang at the end I think. I saw the eighties movies when they came out but not very many from before I started surfing in 78. I remember seeing free ride at the Santa Cruz civic auditorium. So many cute chicks.
It’s the early to mid seventies movies that I haven’t seen would like to see Wayne lynch footage. He seemed important in the transition to short boards and modern maneuvers. Michael Peterson was ripping sunset in expression session. Had never really seen footage of him.

Second Thoughts is all Panaitan. There is a reason they are wearing full suits at One Palm and it’s not cold at all. They only show 2-3 of the waves though. He’s just a selfish dickhead. Caused a lot of trouble for peeps who used to go there.

In a few ways but the most problematic were related to access. For one, he brought that goat and chickens out to the island (or at least that’s what he shows in the vid). That is highly illegal since Panaitan is a national park. It is also generally considered illegal to camp on the island which they were also doing. As the Indo government likes to do, they over-reacted and started hassling the boats out there a bit. Not a big deal to most people but some people were impacted negatively and moved to other regions. At one point, someone was trying to build a camp out there but it got stopped. Granted, there is now a way to stay on land there in the old ranger digs but the waves are generally too heavy for the average person anyway, not exactly the best place for a quick trip. I give him credit for putting together a cool little story with epic waves but quite a bit of what he says in them movie is a bit of a farce.

there is a spot just south of downtown that breaks on a high tide and mixed up swell, Sleepy Hollow. Two hits max, but fun and right on the beach. I had a venue I worked right in front so I’d splash while the guys unloaded the trucks. It sounds funny, but it was fun. Rest of it sucks.
