You would have to be living directly under a rock not to be aware of Heated Rivalry. The Canadian television show, which focuses on the romance between two closeted hockey players, has gone bananas since it was released in the United States at the end of December. It is HBO’s top acquired scripted series ever, according to Deadline, with the two leading men, Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov, becoming major stars.
The business has lead to a wild surge in hockey interest. Ticket sales are up, game viewership is up, the hockey sweater becoming “must-have” addition to any wardrobe.
A completely unforeseen boon for that icy game certainly leading executives at the World Surf League to wonder, “Do we need a Heated Rivalry of our own?”
But of course you remember when the billionaire Dirk Ziff acquired the Association of Surfing Professionals 13 years ago and transmorphed it into the WSL. Paul Speaker, the first CEO, touted the potential and promised he would grow the Pastime of Kings bigger than the National Football League.
Since then, the WSL has churned through a handful of CEOs and grown modestly, in viewership, but broadly remains the afterthought of an afterthought.
Imagine, though, a spicy forbidden romance between last year’s number one Yago Dora, say, and number two Griffin Colapinto. Fiji, Oahu, Portugal and New Zealand providing the stage as the two flit around the world chasing barrels whilst trying to hide their passion.
I would guess that Resetting on the Ski (working title) would soon become very popular and lead to much professional surfing growth, singlet sales, etc.
