I don’t know how much you are following the story of Olympic surfing, in these United States, but it is a WILD ride full of betrayals, sexually-charged liaisons, cloak and dagger intrigue and hurt feelings. As brief background, each country must have a governing body for each sport that it is sending athletes. USA Surfing was the governing body for U.S surfing, though lost the designation due to being poorly run, or something. Former World Surf League CEO Sophie Goldschmidt, who now heads U.S. Ski and Snowboard saw opportunity and made a play for surfing to be governed by U.S. Ski and Snowboard.
USA Surfing reformed, I think, and have been crowing about how Goldschmidt should keep her posh mitts off and that is is the true and august heir to the throneWell, it just received a vigorous endorsement by none other than Mike Levin. The Democrat, who won his typically Republican dominated seat, which covers south Orange County and north San Diego county, back in 2019, came out swinging hard for U.S. Surfing in a boisterous Orange County Register op-ed.
He opens by talking about how important the Olympics are, before excoriating the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee for not recognizing USA Surfing Olympic surfing’s ruler.
“We need to stop stalling and certify a governing body that puts surfers first and converts Olympic attention into a lasting legacy with significant investments for the region. The 1984 Los Angeles Games did just this, turning a few weeks of competition into generations of opportunity for youth sports. Olympic surfing at Lower Trestles should follow that model: pairing global exposure with lasting local impact,” Levin penned, continuing, “With the right leadership, Olympic surfing will allow the world to finally see what our region has known for generations: this coastline is one of California’s greatest treasures and the natural arena for our official state sport. Los Angeles 2028 will mark the first time Olympic surfing is staged at the center of the global surf industry, on one of the most iconic high-performance waves on earth, with fans from around the world lining our shore.”
