in ’83 the entire coast rocked off it’s head for about 7 weeks, no wind either, heaps of rain. I literally told my mom that I wouldn’t be attending my last semester and that I’d finish in the fall.
We would drive hundreds of miles at night, almost every day, from San Clemente.
There were two guys on our program of note. Chris Mc Elroy (pre fame/success) and James See (noted shaper, ripper and longshoreman). One day we made the run to Blacks and it was as good as beach break gets and there’s Chris at the glider park.
I had surfed with Chris at El Cap the previous day. One the hike up the Blacks trail that lunchtime, I passed James, “what up hip?”
Next morning, I sat next to James in the Star bar lineup at full tide and moved to Dane and Sushi’s point as the tide pulled, who was there? Chris (RIP).
I bribed a Cal Trans worker to take me to Malibu the next day. Only other guys out is James and Riddle. Have no idea how James got there and it was so consistent, never spoke just waved. That swell/storms killed Kiddy bowl. PCH was closed due to slides, Malibu empty for weeks.
That afternoon, negative tide, I pulled up at Supertubes and James was already out in the water. No relation to Jenn See. I had to drive all the way around Malibu to Magu to access Supertubes.
Other guys too… it was like we were all on the same wavelength. You’d see the same guys 200 miles in each direction any given day. My non scientific theory is, the cobbles deposited by that storm at Uppers eventually migrated down to Lowers and built what we know today as the left. Lowers did not have a regular left before that season. At one point, Uppers was a long point break of new cobble from San Mateo Creek. Ripper of the highest order in a uber talented San Clemente lineup, Marc fucking Price.

At one point, I slept on the porch of an abandoned house on Dane Sushi’s point for 3 days on a rickety chase lounge, the point was empty and homeowners had written off their homes like so many in Malibu. Pretty much why I moved up here after I sold everything in Newps.
One night I was starving and my sleeping bag was a wreck. I begged a resident to use her phone and I called my mom in LA and drove there to eat a meal and put the sleeping bag in the dryer. Our maid made me a lunch and put in my wagon for the next day plus some soft drinks!!!
The only negative of that two months was I lost my girlfriend.

Wow. I was a TC/Japs kid, went to college above the points. I was on the tennis team and from the corner of our second court, you could look down the canyon at the Japs lineup. Impossible to go to school, Echo was a 40 minute drive too.
