Three months before the groundbreaking big-waver can walk again…
The French big-wave surfer, the first woman to surf mythical outer-reef Belharra and two-time XXL award winner Justine Dupont, has revealed she busted her spine during the Thriller at Killers big-wave event, held in twenty-foot waves, this past weekend.
The Thriller at Killers is, to quote literature associated with the event, “a big-wave surf competition founded by Gary Linden and presented by Punta Brava Golf & Surf Club. It’s comprised of a one-day Main Event during a January-February swell window and a Digital Qualifier, which provides a platform for any surfer capable in big waves to earn an invite to the Main Event. This is more than just another competition — it’s a celebration of the adventurous spirit of surfing and the rich cultural heritage of the entire Bahia de Todos Santos region.”
So far so good, yes?
Well, yes, until the hardboiled, no-nonsense, fear-no-wave Justin Dupont got belted by a clean-up set.
“It was an amazing event, amazing conditions, big waves,” Dupont said from her 10k a day hozzy bed, peachy skin glowing, champagne hair bobbing. “I wanted to to catch big ones, and I ended up catching a big one on the head. I messed up my back and couldn’t surf anymore for the final. I want to thank a lot all the surfers, all the water safety, all the medical staff that helped me to get out of the water. It wasn’t easy with a messed up back.”
Justine and her busted L1 vertebrae were delivered to San Diego where she was placed in a brace, like yike, although she says she’s gonna be walking and surfing within three months.
“Everything’s going to be ok,” she reassured fans.
Dupont had a helluva run in big surf.
Four years ago, Justine nearly drowned at Nazaré after wiping out in front of the cliff there, saved by the grace of god and the terrific jetski pilot skills of Lucas “Chumbo” Chianca, big bro of the world number one Joao, hardly needs introduction whose adventures at Nazaré and Jaws list him as one of the sport’s greats.
Unhappy dolphins worth the price?
“How sad Lucas, total disappointment, where is the respect for his fans? We too can disagree with wrong attitudes… very easy to just leave the comments that are convenient for you…this fight over using marine animals for entertainment is epic!! I adore you saying you are from the sea, and promoting something so surreal… and still deletes my comments…”
“One day humans will pay for what they have done to nature! Holding little animals captive and funding this is disgusting too! You didn’t even have the courage to leave disappointed comments from people who looked up to you! Don’t think your money will buy your happiness because time passes and nature takes!!!”
I ain’t one for putting animals in cages, zoos, water parks, dancing orcas, ooowee, it gives me shivers although I did love the Flipper TV shows and movies, and I believe they mowed through a hundred or so dolphins in the making.
Maybe worth it?

Are you a professional big wave surfer if your medical bills far outweigh your income from it? But in all seriousness, hope for a quick and full recovery.
Got my first ever comment removed ! such a proud moment .
Thought that was Blake Anderson for a sec
Oh… I…. like…. that!
notice how quiet Todos has been since ooffshore waves have been explored?
Love the despo for attention I’m in hozzy IG selfie trend.
Oh look, had my first pee after the catheter was removed!
Can you say independent poop!!!! No nurse!
Follow my journey to surgery and complete recovery!
Tow or not, her Jaws barrel was insanity, and her Red Bull big wave award at Nazare…fuck.
She’s proved herself paddling Mavs and Jaws as well.
A mom too.
Quite an accomplished woman.
If any of you were thinking of joining the Punta Brava Golf and Surf Club after reading this article well your out of luck. This is an exclusive, private, and highly anticipated resort looking for “New Money” to provide a boutique experience for. No hellirides for you.
Probably because she’s the real deal and not a complete idiot. Charges big waves, French beachbreak barrel rider, wingfoiler, mother, etc.
And in other Thriller @ Killers news, Durban’s finest (Jordy lives in Cape Town now), Grant never get old Twiggy Baker won the event.
If a big wave comp happened and nobody knew the results would anyone care?
Hahahahahaha. But now you do!
Slater ready to defend https://uploads.disquscdn.c…
Chas too busy outraging about John Wayne Freeman to write about this.
Wot? Disingenuous post by a dude 5 time zones away?
So you’re telling me..the coke/meth/steroid mix doesn’t work any more…is that what this story is about you soft palmed lettuce eaters
Big waves in the Atlantic is sketchy. I trained for it and paddled some bombs but barely dodged some very dicey moments. Get a triple up on the dome that coincide from different angles and a big tidal pool push and you can be underwater in darkness for a longtime. Only to briefly surface and have the same « freak » situation happen again.

Better than dyin in a car stack
For your legacy but whatever is quickest please.

Last time I checked, Ensenada was very squarely located on the Pacific Ocean.
$10k/d? She can afford it. Pretty sure Dupont invented polymers such as Vespel, neoprene, nylon, Corian, Teflon, Mylar, Kapton, Kevlar, Zemdrain, Nomex, Tyvek, Sorona, viton, Corfam and Lycra. From
memory….
100 dolphins to make Flipper?
cause of death?
Smoking. Amphetamines.
The directors kept pressuring them to keep their weight down, so pushed speed and nicotine on them as appetite supressants.
Just like poor Judy Garland.
Fingered blowhole’s !

Flipper died a natural death he caught a nasty virus.
A handsome woman
I think her silky smooth Cortez bank wave and that giant barrel at Peahi a couple of years back are two of tow surfing’s greatest moments. Heroic.
Getting whipped into waves doesn’t count
Sure. Sliding down a 60 footer is super easy with a tow.
You’re a kook.
