Surfing in Israel
Baruk Cohen gets a lil rinse near Ashkelon, Israel.

Surfer magazine post triggers wild anti-semitic blowback including from sport’s own Candace Owens

“The moustache guy was trying to tell us something but we didn’t listen!!!”

Maybe y’heard, maybe y’didn’t, but the coastline of Med-facing countries got lit up a little while back by waves that were epic even by regular ocean standards.

And in Israel, the Ashkelon surfer Barak Cohen, who is not to be confused with Baruch Cohen, the seventy-two-year-old ex-paratrooper who had his leg blown off by Gazan terrorists by an RPG defending is kibbutz on October 7, got himself a tube that will live forever as a looped reel in his head.

Surfer magazine, which relaunched under new owners several years back, posted the tube with the simple line, Barak Cohen findin’ a gem.

Nice.

Anti-semites roil Surfer post comments

The blowback from readers, including former South African pro Ricky Basnett, once memorably described as “surfing’s Candace Owens”, was swift.

“Why are you celebrating a Jew genocidal parasite? These terrorists are committing war crimes and ecocide and you endorse these criminals? Disgraciado.”

“immédiate unfollow. fuck you and all the Israeli nazists.”

“Either you support the killing of kids or you dont. Be a man and say it. Don’t beat around the bush.”

From Dutchman Gurbuz Akdeniz, “The mustache guy was trying to tell us something but we didn’t listen!!!”

Gurbuz in 1944, “The girl Anne Frank, she’s here!”

Several illustrations created in the spirit of that ol hoax The Protocols of the Elders of Zion were also shared, a Jew hook-nosed peering from around post, a cartoon globe vomiting the Israeli flag.

Surfer Magazine Post Triggers Wild Anti-Semitic Blowback Including From Sport’s Own Candace Owens 2

Both memes liked dozens of times by Surfer readers.

And former Championship Tour surfer Ricky “Bobby” Basnett gets into it with “barreled on stolen land, free Palestine” which subsequently leads into a debate about apartheid in South Africa.

“As a white man having grown up under apartheid in south africa, i think i have enough knowledge on the subject,” writes Basnett.

A little pushback, “Your experience with apartheid is like expertise in opera, impressive, but it has nothing to do with this situation. We can continue this ping-pong when you pack your stuff and go back to Europe.”

To which, Ricky Basnett delivers his coup de grâce.

“Nothing as impressive as the murdering of countless children behind a wall.”

The Surfer is a dumb savage, for the most, who displays his savagery at every opportunity, I think fair to say.

Note to regular readers: who can guess where the slightly abridged quote above came from?

The Bitchy Crab

Barton Lins

Anat Lelior, from Israel.
Just made the FINALS in PIPELINE.
She was the best Non CS Surfer on the contest…
WHERE IS WSL promoting a Surfer from a waveless country in the desert? Imagin if she was not blonde, not blue eyes, and from Lebanon, Egypt or Lybia. WSL WOULD BE PROMOTING as much as it could… BUT…

Brutus

hey pretty good waves in Israel…been making boards for em for 15 years!

JSC

You’re a good cunt, cunt.

Capt Sensible

History will record these last years in the Middle East as the rebirth of the Holocaust with orchestrated systematic ethnic cleansing established by the Jewish State of Israel.

Brutus

which ethnic cleansing?

Brutus

haha, ah the personal shit keeps coming……..no I didn’t watch the video……so tired of political bullshit……….especially from people who claim a state of Palestine /genocide blah blah…

The Bitchy Crab

Dennis, such a great name, too.

The Bitchy Crab

Did he really say that? God he’s good.

Trev

Haha, i figured there might be. My son is about to turn 7 and it’s the same story at his school. No Trevs in his class.

Rich Marx

Do you want to conspicuously show that you are better than everyone else? Are you unable to afford material goods that snobs such as yourself would traditionally use to show your superiority? If so, Free Palestine!

Ramathorn

Jewish Nazis.. Reminds me of the scene from Superbad. Mclovin – a black African Jew

Brutus

how did a delegation from SA to Palestine……find Palestine, as it doesn’t exist?

What do you think if every blackfella in SA had a gun????

@TheRealJackMeoff

I have a friend who has Filipino descent but born and raised in SA. He recently went back with the family and showed me a picture of the giant rock that a guy threw through his driver window missing him by an inch and with so much force it snapped the stickshift in his car.
Luckily it was still in gear and he managed to get far enough away to avoid the carjacking.
He isn’t planning on going back anytime soon.

Hippy

Atta boy cunt

M.

I didn’t know you were a “young earth” weirdo?!? Always thought you had to be incest-born or a homeschooled “pro” surfer to reach that level.

Keepingitreal61

Well there’s 7 million Jews in the USA so why don’t they go back where they came from?

Brutus

wouldn’t it be great if all colonial peoples had to return to their place of origin

NEGATRON

How far back we talking?

Brutus

only trolling , no hypotheticals from me just throwin a lure out…oopps!

Chief Hot stuff

Back to their birthplace!!

Brutus

Chief Hot stuff

Keepingitreal61

Yes you and your kin would have some great uncrowded surf spots

John Smith

Do they take all the stuff they built back with them?

Barton Lins

are you retarded? or you just don’t like us?

Hippy

you are correct, but are you raising your chillun diff?

JSC

If Ricky Bassnet wants to comment on political issues in South Africa, he is well-qualified to do so after a lifetime of residency and there is PLENTY to comment on – no shortage of problems and issues in contemporary South Africa, there are not over 300 000 former South Africans living in Australia because South Africa is an easy and safe place to live.

When it comes to the State of Israel, the Jewish people and their conflict with the so-called “Palestinians”, these are subjects far beyond his knowledge or experience and if he had half a brain he would keep his mouth shut.

Hippy

Please tell us more John

JSC

See above –

Durban Poison

Seems like he’s been disappeared. Hopefully permanently

Fartblossom

You don’t like when a kooky surf photog makes a fool of you?

Durban Poison

Haha who’s fooling who

Barton Lins

you are a well intentioned fool Durban. Woke as can be.

Durban Poison

Oh yes, always happy to call out the racists, misogynists, homophobes and other bottom dwellers

RideTheLiger

The irony of calling someone “woke” when you are the one crying about jew hate just cause someone points out objective facts about Israel. what a pus

Barton Lins

he schooled you. Go Travel

Durban Poison

In his dreams. But thanks I will.

Durban Poison

Aaaaah the expert on South African politics and sharks is back! And once again showing that he actually knows fuck all about either.

JSC

Is Ricky Bassnet your “expert” on South African politics AND sharks?

Durban Poison

No?? My knowledge is based on a life lived in the country and my personal involvement in activism against apartheid and a special love for the Indian ocean and the life within it. But like me and all other South Africans, Ricky is perfectly equipped to understand the brutality and evil conducted by Isreal because its mirrors the same brutality and evil we personally witnessed under apartheid. Then there’s ‘you’, someone who is not from here but who boasts about expert knowledge gleaned from hearsay and ego driven research that reinforces your sad and twisted world view.

deeks

Gotta agree here. He’s a total knobgobbler

JSC

Hardly – having been to South Africa many times and having been a property owner at Jeffrey’s Bay for 12 years, I am perfectly qualified to have an opinion on both South African politics AND sharks, worldwide.

There is zero similarities between the apartheid regime in South Africa and the government of the State of Israel – the current population of the State of Israel is 21% Arab, totaling over 2 million people as of 2023. This population includes Muslims (roughly 83%), Druze, and Christians, and consists mostly of citizens, along with permanent residents in East Jerusalem. They represent about 17.2% with citizenship and 3.9% as residents.

They enjoy all the same rights, privileges and benefits of Jewish citizens and permanent residents of the State of Israel. There is no “apartheid” of any description.

Since it is *very* clear you don’t have the slightest idea what you are talking about when it comes to Israel, sharks, South African politics or anything associated with surfing, it would probably be a very good idea for you to keep your mouth shut on all of the above subjects as well.

Thank You.

Fartblossom

Well put, John.

M.

Wow you’re really came prepared. Facts, stats and all.

There is off course the little inconvenience that the apartheid that is happening and for which Israel is fairly justly criticised by Ricky and others (documented by multiple international human rights organisations), is predominantly taking place in the West Bank. Which unfortunately are not included in your stats. Still good rant. Little pointless, but still…

Brutus

and every where in the World right now racism is back and getting more pronounced…trumps classless racist AI generated of the Obama’s as monkeys,FFS really?
….the so called human rights bureaucracy’s cannot be trusted , as they have a shot term tunnel view…….relative to the 5000 + years of history in the ME…….so yeah West Bank could be gone soon…..and absorbed into Israel….Taiwan will go back to China….

Capt Sensible

Yes and it is across the board no ethnical group is excempt.

Brutus

ha look at Perth and Invasion day……bomb thrown to kill and maim blackfellas….men women and children……we now live in an ever-increasing world where racism is becoming the norm again!

M.

Take the blinders off mate. Human rights are human rights are human rights.

When has systematically denying them to a group of people ever produced anything worthwhile?

Brutus

depends on what you call , worthwhile?

Human rights, hmmmm…….and who polices that again?

M.

Don’t try to make this about semantics. You’re better than that! Define ‘worthwhile’ however you want.

Brutus

hmm human rights ,colonialism with a dash of slavery sure helped the colonial powers to become excessively rich and control peoples lives…….worked for them and set up empires!
Was it worthwhile , fuck yeah for the elite…….just like now they want us the people to play the game of human rights…..while,”they” use a different set of loose rules!

M.

Jesus fuck. Surely you are not trying to convince me that being pro-genocide and pro-apartheid, policies that are being enabled by the best funded military industrial complex in history (Palantir et al), is somehow anti-establishment or anti-elite?!

Keepingitreal61

At first glance it does seem that all citizens in Israel enjoy the same rights, they can all vote, for example, among many other rights granted by citizenship. However, after a more thorough look it becomes clear that this talking point is only held together by the omission of one very important fact:
Israel distinguishes between citizenship and nationality.
What does this mean?
For example, you can be a citizen of Israel but be a Druze national, or a Jewish national. Your nationality is determined by your ethnicity and it cannot be changed or challenged. But how is this relevant to the original question being discussed?
It is relevant because many of the rights you are accorded in Israel stem from your nationality not your citizenship. Meaning an “Arab” Israeli citizen and a Jewish Israeli citizen, while both citizens, enjoy different rights and privileges determined by their “nationality”. Seeing how Israel is an ethnocracy it is not a mystery who this system privileges and who it discriminates against [You can read more about this here].
This is not merely discrimination in practice, but discrimination by law. Adalah have composed a database of discriminatory laws in Israel that disfavor non-Jewish Israelis. For example, the Law of Return and Absentees’ Property Law are but two examples of flagrant racism and discrimination in the Israeli legal system [You can read more about this here].
This is not some old, odd oversight, but a very deliberate part of the design of Israeli society. This is periodically reinforced whenever some Israelis petition the Supreme Court to recognize an Israeli nationality that does not discriminate based on ethnicity. A recent example of these petitions was in 2013, where the Supreme Court rejected such an idea on the grounds that it would “undermine Israel’s Jewishness“.
It says quite a lot about Israel that a unifying egalitarian identity not based around ethnicity would “pose a danger to Israel’s founding principle: to be a Jewish state for the Jewish people“, as the court ruled. The fact that such discrimination is seen as a cornerstone of Israeli society only reinforces its colonial ethnocratic nature, and undermines any claims to equality among citizens.

JSC

I don’t see how this is a problem for anyone non-Jewish as “Israel’s founding principle IS to be a Jewish state for the Jewish people”

The facts are that non-Jews in Israel have a FAR better standard of living and quality of life in Israel as Israeli citizens than any of their neighbors in Gaza, Jordan, Lebanon or Egypt and this has been the situation for many decades.

NEGATRON

His point isn’t about the standard of living.

M.

Must be exhausting work constantly moving the goalposts.

John Smith

100% – you have to compare how Israel treats non-Jews to how the surrounding places treat Jews.

(there is no comparison)

The Bitchy Crab

Oh tell me more about the J-Bay house! Is it beachfront? Are you near Jordan?

JSC

Sold – undeveloped property on Mimosastraat, was getting bled dry by the Kouga Municipality with rates and fees increasing every quarter.

Went from USD $400 per year when we bought to over USD $3000 per year when we sold –

longtomssecondcuztwiceremoved

we?

Barton Lins

he does not have a clue.

Brutus

not sure how you can possibly draw any parallels between Israel and South Africa’s apartheid regime………..South Africa’s apartheid regime represented 5% of whites who raped and pillaged the land and people for incredible wealth and power…

When I was in SA a couple of years ago at J-bay I was pretty shocked at the racism there….but went up to the Transkei , and was pleasantly surprised beautiful people and actually sat down and had a chat with a chief to talk about the end of Apartheid and the repercussions of colonialism….he actually could talk about it openly….but everytime I tried to open a conversation in J-bay about apartheid etc and got ….” ah we don’t talk about the much ,!”…..great surf, but I’d rather be in the Transkei……a lot more friendly!

Durban Poison

Yep sadly, racists persist here that’s for sure. Particularly amongst middle aged and older white people (just like the US!). And the comparison between JBay and the Kei is accurate. But that’s largely because the Kei is predominantly Xhosa and the surf community in Bay is predominantly white Afrikaans and English speaking people. The parallel to Isreal is obvious. Isreal and the South African regime are both responsible for the brutal suppression of indigenous people and are guilty of what the UN has defined as ‘apartheid’ crimes against these people. And just like the white South African government did during apartheid (with Israel military support!), Israel exerts control over Gaza and the West Bank, which are populated by Palestinian people (excluding of course the illegal Israeli settlements that have been established in the West Bank). Our history with the Palestinian people goes all the way back to the Mandela era and Mandela himself is famous for his 1997 speech on the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, in which he said ‘Our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinian people’. In the same speech he connected our struggle against apartheid with their struggle and framed them both as struggles against racial discrimination. So me, Ricky and the majority of South Africans are rightfully highly critical of the Israeli government.

Brutus

the problem with comparing a race of people that goes back 5000 year vs colonialism….the Jews are indigenous to Israel!

Durban Poison

Yes of course Jewish people were also living in the Palestine region but the creation of the state of Israel and the mass immigration of Jews into the region only occurred from 1948, at which point the vast majority of people living there where Palestinians, who were then disposed of their land and had their lives controlled by the ‘colonial’ Israelis, much like the Aboriginals in Australia, the Native Americans in North America and the Africans in South Africa etc etc. Ultimately though, regardless of the fact that Jews once lived in Palestine 5000 years ago while no Europeans lived in Africa back then, history has shown that the Israelis and the Apartheid government of South Africa, are both responsible for the brutal and racist oppression of Arab and African people using similar approaches that have both been defined as ‘apartheid’ by the UN. But don’t argue with me or Ricky, take it up with Mandela (even if he can’t argue back anymore;).

Barton Lins

DURBAN hates Jews. Simple as that

JSC

Ricky Bassnet was a talented but spectacularly unsuccessful professional surfer, with no significant educational or intellectual credentials – who would give two shits about his opinions regarding the State of Israel and the Jewish people?
