We are still two months out from the start of the World Surf League Championship Tour opener in Bells Beach, two years away from Olympic surfing at Lower Trestles. Surf fans, therefore, restless and fishing around for entertainment. The most appropriate catch, outside tomorrow’s Super Bowl, is the Winter Olympics currently taking place in northern Italy.
Curling, skeleton and, of course, a grab bag of snowboard events, which the aforementioned surf fans can almost understand.
Last night, the men’s Big Air finals wrapped with Japan grabbing gold and silver and the venerable Todd Richards on the mic, for United States of Americans.
Those surf fans certainly know Richards from his Monday MASS podcast with Chris Cote wherein the two discuss surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding and sexually edgy hockey programs.
Richards, anyhow, has also been calling Olympic snowboarding, for NBC, for many years and is the best in the game.
Last night caught him being better. After the Big Air event, the mic was apparently left on and caught him saying, “That was boring. That was so boring.”
He, as any sensible sort with an actual job, took to social media to explain the context for his comment but I simply gasped with joy.
Yes and more please.
Surf commentary is, of course, one superlative after another. No day bad, no surfer off, Filipe Toledo brave. But if everything is always a 10, than everything is also a 1. Joseph Turpel and gang taking us for a bunch of fools perpetually with that Wall of Positive Noise.
Calling what is what is for a discerning fan such a breath of icy fresh air, even if the mic was accidentally hot.

the thing is, the core snowboarders all said this was exactly what would happen after seeing snowboarding’s olympic debut back in 98.

My neighbor was a Dogtown era star and he pointed him out on a trip to North County….. North Jetty. Went to a pool in Vista and CM was ripping it. My neighbor did well, couple other young guys in the mix too… late 90’s. Text him to see if he still has the stills I shot that day
