Insane price spike nets buyer of Taj Burrow duplex ten million dollars in four years!
Real estate is a game where, with a few good pivots, even the fool who’d never build or invent or service can find a quick way into the millionaire biz.
Taj Burrow, the almost-fifty-year-old former world number two, knows. He’s one of the few high-profile shredders from the nineties who didn’t invest his formidable bankroll, at least entirely, in hookers, Balinese bars and coke.
He’s got the award-winning Nautilus House at Rabs, rented by Nico Cage at two k a night, a sprawling eleven acres of bucolic loveliness fifteen minutes from Yallingup’s white-sand beaches and unforgiving reefs and, at one point, he had a two-bed duplex a few steps from a hunk of Tamarama dirt that sold a year back for forty-five mill.
Back in 2014, see, Taj, then thirty-six and the second oldest surfer on tour, bought himself a top-floor, three-bedroom duplex circa 1950s that overlooks the area’s best, though wildly fickle, wave, McKenzie’s Bay.

Tamarama is where multi-multi-million dollar houses and million-dollar-plus apartments created by the city’s best architects (Hello Alex Popov! Luigi Rosselli! Kelvin Ho!) hang over either a coastal footpath (Kenneth St) or a narrow road (Gaerloch Avenue) that winds around to the neighbouring beach, Tamarama, where surfers ride either an imperfect left off the northern headland at low-tide and a squishy little rip bowl right near the shore at high tide.
Fun enough.
Taj’s Mackenzies Bay three-bedder, with garage, cost him 2.3 mill, two hundred gees cheaper than its asking price in 2010. An epic buy.
For reasons known only to Taj and the gods, four years ago he quietly sold the joint off market for $3.9 mill. I remember at the time, a real estate agent pal, suggested I have a lil chat with Taj to tell him he was wildly undervaluing the place.
Of course, I didn’t, no man likes being told what to do with his fortune least of all by a muckraker with barely enough scratch to buy the board shorts made by his sugar pops Billabong.
Anyway, a real good buy at under four.
And, this was amplified real loud, real clear, late last year when the other half of the duplex, the ground floor, sold for, wait for it, drum roll, clash of symbol, honk of the klaxon…
Fifteen million dollars.
Nowhere near the view of Taj’s old joint, same land, same beat-up garage.
I imagine the ten bricks are neither here nor there for the always pleasantly balanced surf legend but does this lost op remind you of any or all of your own poor real estate pivots or biz decisions?
I’ve won, lost, won, lost and, six days ago, put all my chips back on the table, coincidentally fifty yards from the former Taj Burrow duplex.
How about the below the liners?
Tell me about catastrophic losses and big wins, the pain, the joy and so forth.

I’m basically homeless, and even renting will have me on the lowest tier housing. Buying the most decrepit shithole hovel would mean moving hundreds of kilometres inland, and even then I probably couldn’t afford it. Need to start thinking about winning some comps on the CT I reckon.
I got a garage. In dee why tho. Its big and has an upper deck
Local boardriders a couple years ago changed name of annual comp to the ‘Classic’ from the ‘Australia Day’ comp.
Oh fuck, the amount of moaning from old cunts I hear about it is unreal.
Andy’s surfing was so fucking good.
That music is whack AF though.
Fucken listicle time .!

The American flag is a thing of beauty, a concession you must make. Speaking of flags, the Marshall Islands, gorgeous thing.
You been to the right, DR?
In West Oz?
Marshalls
Ah, no, got invited as part of a package to write Martin Daly’s memoir but turned it down. Can’t remember why. Looks pretty good that windy right.
Thats ironic brother
I’ve found Strayans are insufferable nationalists, especially when some bland vanilla reps your country on tour and the Blakey’s go into full ball suck for the flag mode
As for your first point, my old college town looks like a trump rally now. Enormous flags. Fake patriots
I cant stand flags or flag waving.
you Kiwi though, right?
Not one of those ones though.
Badges!!
Saucy young lady who has head hunted came in to browse. During the most heated moment an actual crackhead came and went with expensive paints only to be relieved of them by the cleaner at the cafe next door! Wild afternoon.

Yo Barrelled The Classic is fucking going off
Drive to surf both south then north revealed well overhead lines marching through the cove and two unridden on the first pass…. Men’s heat I assume. Maybe there were so many waves that with 4 out, bound to happen I don’t know, but the place I surfed nearby was very consistent.
Then about 11:34 a guy in red blew the set wave of his life in front of the entire town. I think it was red from a distance. He had one section to clear and and got clipped by the section, zero risk and easy to connect and the wall went another 75 yards, so fucking taggable. He will not sleep sober for some time, fucking haunting memory. I rose up in my seat waiting for him to come around the corner and slay it. Nope. The thing ran off without him.
Talk about crying over RE speculation.
Bought some fake hash in Lisbon once. Never forget.
Eu tambem.
You speak wog ?!
what sort of a right wing religious zealot are you ?.
fodasse carolhas !
Sim ,um pouco.
You roo rooting, koala fingering, convict, bogan cunt you!
Taj’s brick box is ugly as fuck. Strayan interior designers paint Micks house and everything in it white. Haydens kit home, perfunctory on nzed, is conceptual modern in Sydney? What’s wrong Strayan Cunts, are you the equivalent of bad Pom “ chefs”?
Owens house looks like a cheap US dorm room. More examples than one can count. And none of these cheap, poorly built shit holes are worth anything if the waves below them are filled with teeth.
I got hit by a drunk dude in Waikiki on the street between Pink Cadillac and The Wave in ’89, the cop put me in touch with his lawyer buddy, i ended up with $18k cash, i thought about buying some microsoft stock, instead i blew it all on surf trips and partying, not terribly remorseful about it.
If only you mentioned Shorebird
Few peeps know this Skip, Gwen Walz’s Eyes was a waitress at all 3 joints mentioned.
oh hell yeah great times there
Or the Hideaway
I wonder what Happy Camper would think about this post? I hope he’s doing alright.
Smooch smooch
No offence DR- but how do you lose on an asset that only goes up?
I’ll explain that.
You buy speculatively on a place so expensive that your mortgage, insurance, maintenance fees, and property taxes are in the many thousands per month.
Then unforseen circumstances jolt the market causing consternation from other speculative buyers who wait for economic changes to happen before they pull the trigger, and unless you have deep pockets and even deeper levels of patience, you eat it on said monthly payments, month after month after month.
Of course you could rent to cover some of the expenses, but that is far from optimal and incurs risks of different sorts, or you could AirBnB it, and if things are good you might come through it less scathed or even getting ahead, but that is given your rental/BnB isn’t so over the top that only royalty can afford it.
And hopefully you buy in a location not prone to natural disasters or even worse, the whims of Community or HOA boards.
And hopefully you bought turn key without impending upgrades like kitchen or bath renovations.
One thing that worries me about Dez is his proclamation of FOMO, or fear of missing out, which more often than not translates to should have been here yesterday.
Reading these prices is mind boggling, and one can only wonder how far up it can go.
Having just let go of my land for a modest markup at literal pennies on the dollar compared to that makes me realize I need to reinvest, as there is crazy room for growth here with writing all over the wall.
But I am sure Dez understands all this, and isn’t the land barron legend he is for nothing.
Time will tell I suppose.
Seems like greed gets people into trouble. My parents bought a house for $175,000 in 1978. I sold it for three million when they passed.
Put the money in a fidelity wealth management account. Low risk and doing ok.
Not sure why you care about the price of silver etc.
People here buy 20+ M dollar homes and never occupy them.
House next door sold for 3.2…. they can’t insure it because of water damage
2 bed 2 bath, 4 blocks off the water, upgraded tract home.
My parents house got bulldozed to put a new house on top of the foundation. Buyers paid three mill for the view of mt tam.
I staged a house in Orinda…. Gorgeous valley, but all I could think of was fire. Great thai food too…. oh man. I did my thing, photog shot it during Covid so virtual tour thing, boom sold in minutes.
Same with my area. Every house is surrounded by trees.
fcuk that.
Wow, crazy the $$ out there.
As soon as the tech boom happened in San Francisco in the nineties prices went through the roof because it’s a half hour commute to SF with beautiful scenery and hiking/biking trails. Guy down the street is worth seven billion.
Used to be a bunch of deadheads and musicians that lived around here.
boomer and tech bro wealth- so much more where that came from.
Newsom paid ten million for his new house last year in my neighborhood and it doesn’t even have any nice views . A three million dollar house is basically a tear down.
You still live in the hood?
Yes, I’m jealous of all you guys that have lived all over the world but it’s nice to take walks by the elementary school I went to etc. I still live a mile away from where I was born.
Biggest move for me was going to college in Santa Cruz, but I would still drive home on the weekends to surf OB and party with my friends. Lol
Good on ya and good outlook there.
Hopefully you got a little chunk of land up by your neck of the woods, there are still some to be had away from the masses that’s for sure.
Can you invest in property down where you live? Heard that you can’t own but get a hundred year lease or something.
Absolutely.
There are caveats and a crash course of the ins and outs is required, but once you get informed it is not only possible but totally worthy.
Siiick. Nor Cal is over with as far as bargains go.
As an example I am going to look at a piece of
land this week that is 20×20 meters for less than 3 grand.
Of course it is up the hill a little bit but seriously worth the time to investigate.
Land in Aus is scarce, we are attached to the arse end of Asia and billions of people who want to live here.
Prices ain’t going anywhere but up.
How is it sustainable?
Surely wages aren’t matching those numbers.
how is is sustainable in Monaco, or South of France or Hong Kong?
Land and property for the rich and generational wealth, the rest will be housed in little boxes.
RE prices stopped tracking wages 2 decades ago here.
Toronto, similar to Sydney, now six and a half percent down and falling. Melbourne, once parity with Sydney, roughly half the price.
yeah, and Vancouver?
Geelong, Torquay?
Melbs (terrible ugly place) and Toronto (who could live in a climate like that?) both outliers.
Melbourne real good example of what happens if you tax the hell out of investors, limit Air BnB and give free reign to crims.
I think you’ll be surprised, eventually, how fragile the whole card house thing is.
Financial crisis and a global pandemic didn’t shift things – what will?
I bought in the GFC. Bondi. Went backwards for four years before it inched slightly forward in 2015. Then boomed. You can remember those grim years on the GC, idle cranes, half finished skyscrapers, people doin’ their shirts on overpriced houses.
I guess.
Never seen anyone not make a motza who held nerve through flat spots.
By loss, I mean not holding onto an asset beyond immediate, and what seemed wildly impressive at the time, gains. Beachfront GC par example.
ah, so potential loss, not actual loss.
Yes, yes! Unrealised gains etc.

Taj boy is pretty busy trying to save at least 20 % of what he owns to worry about this shit.
big D?
yep
So many surprising things about divorce that no one tells you.
I got a chicken coop and a heavy bag out of my mates divorce.
My chick got the mine and I got the shaft, as they say.
Like if you get caught rootin the nanny then you are loosing at least 80% plus ongoing maintance till the kids are 16 , and setting up family trusts with you parents aint going to save your arse.
Bought a place west of Fremantle in 2010, don’t know why, I hated the joint and couldn’t wait to leave. Sold it last year for a $100k profit, but if I spent the same money in Byron in 2010, where I always wanted to be, I’d be semi retired in my late 30’s and cruising for the next 20 years. Hindsight is a beautiful thing.
West of Fremantle?
Rotto?
Mauritius?
semi-retired Uber drivers are a dime a dozen up here mate.
Its a not a life for anyone with a skerrick of dignity.
Yeah, but beats TV, I guess.
and a beautiful clientele on a Fri evening
South Africa?.. its one of the only places you’d make $100k in 15years on property.
So the book biz is ok? I have your Blanche offering and reading begins tomorrow evening as I have a saucy date with a young vixen tonight! Excited for both!

Late 2017, maybe 2018, whenever that first big Bitcoin/crypto pump happened and it hit mainstream conscience and media. I’d bought a few BTC at about 1K a pop, made some bank, watched it grow, got it to about $30K with pretty much zero effort. For some reason had a hunch ripple was about to pop. Was about 30c at the time.
Went all in. Cashed out my BTC and put all $30K on Ripple. Not a trader, barely a joker. Within about 12 hours my $30K had taken a wee tumble to about $27K. That was enough for my quaint tummy to handle so I said fuck that and cashed out. Tidy profit etc. Had a trip to Oz coming up so needed the funds for a bit of travel. Gave myself a pat on the back and packed my bags.
Well fuck me if I don’t get to Oz and a couple weeks later check in on the old crypto exchange and see that Ripple had moonshot and topped $3. My $30K woulda been $300K had I just left it for 2 weeks. Ah well, I’m still working F-T, paying off the mortgage, and trying to explain to Mrs. Franck and kid Francks why we can’t go to Tokyo Disneyland every year.
Fuck!
“Fuck the fucken fuckerz !!! Frank booth blue velvet
Don’t you fucken look at me, don’t you fucken look at me.

Nothing to see here just the worlds most successful investor of all time comparing bitcoin to chain letters and showing his understanding of the gambling instinct of people better than they understand it themselves. Bitcoin is just snake oil in a different package. Grifters gunna grift till the end of time. Speaking of which, any of you fools buy any sweet NFTs?
Speaking of snake oil salesman. How about that Michael Saylor? I don’t see it ending well.
His problem is that his company has tens of thousands of shareholders reliant on him to make them money. Fuck that kinda stress. As long as I’m breathing and my heart’s beating, I can just let crypto yo-yo all it wants til I’m in the black and happy to cash out. Could be this year, could be in 2040. I’m happy to wait. Not sure Saylor’s shareholders will be as patient…
I took bitcoin tips off the nice man in the gym who used to kimura me all the time, turned seven k into one. And falling. Chump change, I know, but still.
Old Stanislav ain’t no fucking wanker banker, but I do know this: if you’ve got $7k to put in, then just let it rot until it hits $7k plus whatever you’re happy with. I’ve got no doubt BTC will have its time in the sun again. All depends on whether you’re happy sticking your umbrella up while it’s raining or not.
BGBTC
An undeniable sign
The bottom is in!
Let’s hope so Eddie
Coz I do not want to wait
Til I’m on death’s door
Meh, you gotta take a punt on some things don’t ya? The sharemarket, super (401k), term deposits, plain old cash in the wallet, they’re all pretty “safe” ain’t they? ya gotta have a lash at something. I don’t understand anyone putting money into the pokies up the pub, or gambling at the casino. But it’s the same thing isn’t it? Taking a risk to get a quick win.
If you can afford it, why not? If you can’t, and you’re pissing your life away, then you’ve got bigger issues than what safe old Mr. Buffett has to say.
