The very well-connected surf industry man who broke the sad news to me yesterday that Reno Abellira, former world tour shredder and wildly influential surfboard shaper, had died has since downgraded the news to “in prison.”
Reno, who is seventy-six, has been knocking on heaven’s doors, you could say, ever since he took to living an unconventional outdoor life among the rough and tough of Honolulu’s street world with all its half-naked hookers, square pushovers, sissies, gays, teenage chippies and chippie chasers. Stroll into that world and you’ll recoil at the melded odours of bargain colognes and steamy armpits riding the sweltering tropical air like a sour aphrodisiac for gawking male bangers.
And last year, he was reported missing from his homeless encampment at Alii Beach, near the boat harbour at Haleiwa there as you swing into the North Shore.
The legendary North Shore lifeguard Darrick Doerner raised the alarm. “The community is looking for Reno. LMK If anyone has seen him or been it touch please. We’re all concerned. His home at alii beach. Been MIA for one week. Help all of us find him.”
He was found, then, and after news of his death did the rounds yesterday, it was revealed Reno, who has had a chequered history with law enforcement, in 1992 he went on the lam after being busted for dealing four pounds of coke and twenty-seven pounds of weed, is actually enjoying the sweet air of a Oahu prison.
Very good news, you’d think, although prison ain’t no fun with all its fallout of misery and death.

well what a ride , and here we are a day later with the news reno is alive and in prison . This is great news as there is always hope if he can dry out …..when I left Hawaii in Dec last year …he was homeless living in trash cans in China town……and everybody bar none has tried to help …and just so we can get a bit of closure…..maybe just me…..here’s the article done on BG 9 years ago….Reno as you can tell is a writer/story teller……one of the most gifted humans I have ever come across , a true class act…..and as I have said before he was a mentor/ a friend……helped me thru jail and the always connection to my friend which have become family in Hawaii…….
