The sky is brighter, this morning, for surf fans around the globe. Just yesterday, he felt very much isolated. She an outcast from the broader sport watching community. Oh sure, there are various Disqus boards, including here, where they could chat with likeminded surf fans but could also easily count every single person there using only fingers and toes. Nice to be part of a small community but also lonely.
Well, you certainly understand the lightness, today, after the World Surf League revealed that we are not alone.
The opening Bells is under a week away, now, and the WSL just announced its partners for the 2026 Championship Tour season. Yeti, I-Sea sunglasses, Red Bull, Corona, the True Surf video game, Surfline and business software co. Finesta will be majors with Lexus coming on regionally.
Very exciting but the best bit of the presser was how many surf fans there are. WSL Chief Revenue Officer Nicole Metzger sharing, “Following our record 2025 season, which reached 80M fans globally, we’re proud to welcome our partners who are equally committed to the world’s best surfers and the broader surfing community.”
80 million!
If surf fans were a country, we would be more populous than the United Kingdom, France, Tanzania and Thailand.
If surf fans were a religion, we would bigger than Shinto, Sikhism, Judaism and Jainism.
If surf fans were a musical artist who streamed on Spotify, we would best David Guetta, Shakira, Kendrick Lamar and Maroon 5.
If surf fans were a movie, we would have tied Project Hail Mary’s weekend box office numbers.
When you go out and about, today, hug a stranger. Chances are it’ll be a surf fan.

If the wosl have 80m fans who watch the contests, a good 1% of them must be BG readers.
And 1% of that 800k are sure to be commenters, with a further 1% of that 8000 being the approximate 80 names total that’ve been seen here over the years.
With such numbers being bandied about isn’t it time we regular commenters received a cut of the (obviously massive) BG income so we can all buy beachfront homes, and go to Kelly’s tub every second Wednesday of the month ?
