Feelings of consternation and discomfort are spreading around the globe, this morning, after Australia’s Jacob Wilcox and Brazil’s Yago Dora made peace instead of closing each other’s Straights of Hormuz. People in every corner, from high up in Alaska all the way down low to Tasmania, have become used to enmity during the last decade plus. Right fighting left, country fighting country, president fighting pope.
Conflict has become our baseline, so the aforementioned unchill emotions (consternation and discomfort) make much sense. It was expected that Dora’s camp would wish death on Wilcox and Wilcox’s camp would do something sarcastic after the two surfers nearly came to shoves in Margaret River’s car park. The reason for rage, a non-called potential interference in the opening round head between the two wherein last year’s champion defeated the local boy.
A Stab staffer was there, observing, and we might have footage of the almost-pushes but he was told to delete it and did.
Surf fans, anyhow, awaited death and sarcasm but were served peace instead.
Taking to social media, Dora penned:
Competition is competition, and these kinds of situations are inevitable; we’ve put all that behind us. Yesterday, things got unnecessarily out of hand, we thought it through, and today Jacob, my team, and I decided to get together to talk things through and sort things out. Jacob is a formidable competitor and a great person; I wish him the best of luck in his Challenger Series campaign this year!
So there we go. I guess Wilcox needing no security detail when the Challenger Series hits Rio de Janeiro this coming October.
