The United States, bitterly divided for over a decade now, is experiencing a moment of peace, this morning, at least as it pertains to American surfers. MAGA hats doffed to rainbow flag flyers as the twain pass in the street. Manosphere denizens and those who frequent MS NOW making small talk.
The reason?
The first Thursday in April just so happens to be National Burrito Day and as everyone knows, the burrito is the preferred post-surf meal from La Jolla up to La Push, Bar Harbor down to Boca Raton. Though some surfers enjoy their burritos with beans and rice and others prefer the meat-only option, the supremacy of the li’l donkey is universally recognized amongst wave sliders.
While the origins of National Burrito Day are unclear, the burrito, itself, has been consumed since 1500 BC by our Mayan friends. There was much writing about the burrito by the kind Spanish conquistadors who toured Mexico in the 1800s, though peak burrito might have occurred right here in San Diego, in the mid-80s, when a genius at Roberto’s decided that beans and rice were, in fact, gross and swapped them out for french fries and guacamole.

Once, when I was at the Florida Surf Film Festival with Sam George and Matt Warshaw, the latter called Festival co-founder and director Kevin Miller and asked for a Mexican restaurant recommendation. They along with Warshaw’s son, were returning to the airport, if I recall. The Florida Surf Film Festival, for the unawares, takes place in Daytona Beach. I became instantly incensed and yelled at Warshaw for daring to eat Mexican food in Florida and especially in Daytona Beach. He is originally from California and should have certainly known better.
Though I very much enjoy the California burrito, my favorite burrito in the world is King Taco’s all-meat carne asada.
Nothing beats it and if you suggest otherwise, bitter divisions will return.

Never want to see J-Bay off of the calendar but I’m excited for a new venue and especially one such as legendary as Manu. I’ve been reading about that wave (Raglan) for 30 years. I don’t care if it’s not a primo, contest destination. As long as they get some swell then I’ll be pretty stoked to see how the surfers handle it.
I had some friends fly to Puerto Rico in 2010, with their families, to watch the CT event as it was close to home. I can imagine that a lot of people will want to do the same for Manu. Not good for the surfers, but hopefully good for the economy.
