It has not been a great decade for surfing’s legacy surf brands. Back in the before time, Billabong, Quiksilver, et. al. were gilded darlings. Worn by surfers, craved by posers, valuations soaring into the hundreds of millions and even billion. Shifting consumer tastes and questionable decision making gutted them all, though, and they were lumped together then sold for scrap to the likes of Authentic Brands Group and Bluestar Alliance. Once proud logos slapped onto fingernail clippers and pool toys.
But soft, what light through yon window breaks? A glorious return to greatness through charity?
And of course you were well aware of the torrential rains that brought much flooding and destruction to the Hawaiian islands weeks ago. Whole neighborhoods undone. The community has come together, friends helping friends dig out, with the aforementioned Billabong, Quiksilver and others in the Surf Brand Alliance giving away hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of clothing.
On the North Shore, flood victims were entitled to $500, each, of surfwear, according to Hawaii News Now. Mitch McEwen, brand manager for Hawaiian Island Creations, declared, “Of course, the North Shore is the mecca of surfing, and everyone has an attachment to the North Shore. For us, we have three stores out here, so it’s literally our ohana that’s out here that was affected. It’s been great to see the support. Halewiwa is open (and) ready to support all the businesses.”
Community organizers were hoping for $100,000 from the Alliance, but over $300,000 was poured in.

My favorite surf brand was Faith Riding Company, a Tony Moniz effort that had the best t-shirt fabric and logo designs, simple but elegant, I wore the eff out of those shirts back in the day. I also accidentally on purpose stuffed him at 7th hole, I quickly got off but the damage was done, he was not visibly upset, being a good Christian and all but his buddy was effing pissed and wanted my ass so I paddled in immediately and all my buddies were already doing the same having seen the whole scene, not my best but definitely a memorable day on Oahu!

O/night Medan, another day of travel to the islands (pending where you stay). We did the local ferry from Nias down to tell so had to sit around the harbour for a bit. Stayed at TI Surf house. Wave out front was fun, few options to boat to also. Wind was south the whole time so RLZ and everyone else was coming up to surf out front. Easy to time it. Fun waves, nothing serious. Perfect really lol
Yip that’s the one. The TI surf house only has vacancy for about 10 nights so we have to find something else on the island for the rest. Hopefully fill out 3-4 weeks there. You go elsewhere or was that the trip? That left looks super fun, I don’t normally pack my fish but thinking I should?
We did 10 there. Was perfect. Got 2 swells. Surfed a few other spots for variety/needed to go right. Rod if you’re keen. Me, no, but a few of the boys did. GTs. Nias for a few on the way back to tick it off the bucket list. Fun adventure vs the guys flying in on the PJ to stay at RLZ. Andreas and Domi were great hosts.
Did you speak to any other guest from the other places to stay on the island? Andreas (rightly so)isn’t to forthcoming about the opposition.
Yeah, weird vibes around that. Think more to do with the surf house linked to the village and providing for the entire village. Looked like a couple of quaint home stay style set ups tho. Taha’s I think. Not surf of their boat set up. The beach is beautiful around the back end too. No one at the lodge, was closed at the time. Pinnacles was very quiet too.
My gal saw some photos of the rooms now getting scared off. It’s basic she know but now thinking it’s a hell hole. I said I’d ask someone. So here I am asking!
I’m worried about staying elsewhere on the island if there’s no guests and having to fork out for the whole boat rides. Any kind words to reel her back in? You went on a boys trip?

Yeah, boys trip so luxuries weren’t a priority. Keep in mind things may have changed. Mattresses are foam, not mattresses. Mozzie nets and I can’t remember if there were fans. Power cuts out at 10-ish too.
The bathroom/shower downstairs is not third world, tiled basic etc. cold water but still pleasant. There’s also a (manual) toilet off the back deck. You’d also want one of the two rooms facing the surf. Back right room is toilet adjacent, back left has a little food/coffee prep area that Andrea’s sisters use before and after serving the guests. On that, besides basic meals, not an abundance of food, so we stocked up hard in Telo town.
Just looked at the website and yeh, that’s what the rooms look like.
Also add, Mick was great to deal with.
The other joints on the island would be more even more basic amenities wise. It’s primitive. Unless you wanted to splash cash and stay at Telo Island Lodge. I would assume that is far more comfortable.
My wife would certainly not survive. She’d still be more suited to Nias at Jamburae Lodge or Simeuele at Aura/Mahi.
Telos 101 and Telo Ranch – to me – look far more wife friendly. Just a trade off that you’re not directly in front of the left.

RLZ is the best spot in the Telo’s. That chain is choke with waves, specifically has some solid rights but wind can be an issue in general. If you ever decide to roll to Nusa Tenggara Timur again let me know, there is a newer boat to the area, word of mouth, legend captain, but I ain’t throwing it out on here.

It’s not that winds are bad, it just doesn’t have those consistent and always present trade winds since it’s on the equator so more roll of the dice and the winds can spin around. It’s just not a Desert Point or Grajagan type thing where it has to have those guaranteed trades or it sucks. Just make sure you have open access to a decent boat, there’s waves everywhere if you do.
Anything is better than my home break. Compared to this I’m pretty sure I’ll be in heaven.

Met up with family last week for lunch, this is where they picked. It had an outerknown store, me looking to see if anyone was inside was the most interest I saw the 90 min I was there, though I wasn’t paying too much attention.
But this sign with misspelled surf spots was amazing. If you look closely they call it “steamers lane”, which sounds more like an outdoor toilet than a surf spot.
