NZ teetotalers super pissed with proposed alcohol sales for upcoming Corona Cero New Zealand Pro

"You're creating an environment where alcohol consumption is visibly associated with surfing..."

New Zealanders who don’t drink adult beverages, and would prefer others to abstain as well, are up in arms, today, after the World Surf League signaled it would sell Corona Cero+ (now with alcohol) at the just-around-the-corner Corona Cero New Zealand Pro.

Yes, the World Surf League will swing into greater Manu Bay, there on the eastern side of New Zealand’s northern island, and teetotaling locals are worried about bawdy booziness.

Waikato District Council ratepayer Jeffrey Lim flat out declared, “There’s no reason to have alcohol at the event. I think it’s disrespectful because it goes against some norms that were established many, many, many years ago. I’m saying more than 30, 40 years ago, that people did a lot of work to establish Manu Bay as a no alcohol area and a no commercial activity area and that’s all being brushed aside.”

University of Waikato associate professor and Raglan local Victoria Egli “Alcohol has no place there. You’re creating an environment where alcohol consumption is visibly associated with surfing, and surfing is really a sport that sits at the heart of who we are. It’s our identity, it’s our culture, it’s our everyday life, and particularly for children and young people. And my concern is that if we allow alcohol to proceed, it’s going to normalise alcohol as an integral part of participation where it doesn’t belong.”

She continued, “The other thing to remember is the event is quite remote. Manu Bay is quite a remote location and one of the other concerns that that I have as just a community member is, who’s going to look after any alcohol harm that occurs in those places on the weekend. It’s an hour’s drive to Hamilton. There’s no clear provisions of what safety is going to be there for those that do choose to drink, and do choose to drink to excess.”

While other District Council managers and the mayor tried to tamp down discontent by explaining that providing hard drink would prevent an out of BYO situation and that it’s just a one-time sorta thing, they could have bolstered their case by showing a World Surf League event to the dubious sobers.

“See? You have to drink in order to almost enjoy it.”

I’m certain there would be no further complaints.

Firelipe Torpedo

Surely this guy will change his mind once the forcast goes to shit

RQ.

it had occurred to me, but I’m pretty fuckin lazy and the youngest would never make it, would have to leave him to the elements around the refinery. water taxi? hahaha. have been told the coming around Whaanga and walking in is a no go either. not sure how or where they would police that though. that option makes the most sense for a few of us out here, but they seem pretty set on putting everyone on a bus.

Capt Sensible

The negative eco footprint that NZ has invited into its natural environment, well done you idiots.

Mate. Get fuckin real. Every activity has an effect on the environment. You just want nobody to go to NZ?

Do you surf? Ever purchased a surfboard? Ever gone on vacation? Should Ramjet just stay at home at play with his asshole, instead of living life? There may be reasons for not having this contest but you haven’t given us any.

Edit: and you ALSO want pro surfing to cut all ties with alcohol (and presumably cannabis) because some people have used it to ruin their lives? Should we just go ahead and prohibit alcohol from all of society as well? What the fuck are you on about ? Think you need to run your comments through a sounding-board before you send them off, and ask that sounding board if you sound like a wank-stain first.

Capt Sensible

I wish all WSL competitions were held in NZ , so all you surf brand groupie selfish cunts that think the environment is some other cunts responsibility would simply fuck off out of the places that used to be so peaceful until the surf comp tourists started piling in.
I most likely started surfing (and still actively surf) before your parents had been taught to wipe their own bums so blow that out of your fucken pipe you, Kook.

Ps lets revisit this in 5 years if the comp lasts that long in NZ and see what the real impact to the local non competitve surfer has been.

Occy's Nostril

Based on your studies humans should no longer have children and graze on grass & drink water from their local stream where they are born until such time they die.

Barnycle

Just go down for one day if the weather is good, and take in something new. Or don’t.

But definitely don’t whinge about having to part with a few dollars to see the top surfers in the world do their thing.

RQ.

been to a few wsl comps, never had to pay for the pleasure. would love to go, but not if it’s a complete cluster fuck.

Trev

Sit on your couch then. You ever been to a big concert or sell out rugby game at Eden Park? You can’t expect it to be like strolling down to your local board riders or club rugby.

RQ.

yeah, i understand it’s different at Manu, but the last comp I went to (Sunset), we parked up and literally strolled down. I’m looking forward to it either way, but if it’s an expensive, 3 stage process to even get there, let alone back, the couch it is. This comp was (for whatever reason) thrown together in about a quarter of the time of the usual WSL events, and it’s looking like they said yes without actually factoring in what a niggly little spot the comp is going to be run.

Trev

Traffic will be an issue (nowhere near as bad as North Shore though) but I think if there’s options to be bused in like they do at Bells, that’s the best call.

RQ.

totally. there’s not enough parking on a sunny sunday. the busses worked for Soundsplash too, but it’s a different scenario event-wise. as i said, I can easily opt out of the shennanigans, but if it’s pumping there will be some fully spewing locals that can’t get to indies. that will be interesting!

Capt Sensible

Barnycle the NZ WSL stooge.

Beef & Beer

Take a camo net and make a bivvy up in the bushes, stock with beers etc and camp out for the duration.

Heck ya could stay hidden there for years before they’ll catch ya, been done in that area before…

RQ.

hahaha. i have been up in to the bush there a few times to take photos, actually suprised I haven’t stumbled in to a tourist camp.

Hippy

Used to have a girls hour

Daniel would take claim too

They can have it

Capt Sensible

Might explain why you rarely see Kiwis in solid surf.

Hippy

Not true, you just don’t know where to look

Occy's Nostril

Outerspace.

Hippy

I sat with hog and webster at an infamous point break. Heavy but super long rights. Above us, taking off “behind” the rock and fucking suicide were Ian Walsh and Kyle Garson. Next next level. I kept chiding Noodles to “get up there pro”. Neither wanted anything to do with that ledge in front of the rocks. Garson knifed takeoffs that had no margin for any error.

Of course we all rode down the bay and walked back so we were rarely all sitting at the same time. Great rotation

Derek Hynd's Missing Fins

Dude was East Coaster! What happened to him?

Hippy

Lives in Playa Hermosa, pretty sure he grew up there

FL Skunk Ape

He’s back in FL now. Still ripping.

Capt Sensible

so like the Oz leg two mush buggers and a 2ft softcock tube.

Capt Sensible

https://uploads.disquscdn.c… Drink Carona be like Andy

Capt Sensible

https://uploads.disquscdn.c… The WSL should learn from the past and seek healthy life options for sponsor partners, doesn’t the sport have enough history of addiction train wrecks and lives lost due to substance abuse to learn its lessons.

Trev

Are we really comparing Corona with it’s surfy sunset marketing to full blown ice addiction that TC had?? It’s like saying Red Bull leads to heroin.
Corona is canoe sex beer, fucking close to water.

Capt Sensible

are you easily led by advertising by any chance

Trev

I haven’t booked a trip to WA or bought anything from Rip Curl so far this year. But I do have the urge to book a trip to Margies and I need a new 3/2 for winter.

Capt Sensible

man, i hope it pumps in the land of the cuzzy bro’s. and they drop Margaret River from the tour. it makes sense to go Bells /Snapper/NZ ( i d0nt even know what the fucken wave is called).
